Israeli police attacked dozens of worshippers in Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound before dawn on Wednesday, witnesses said, in what Israeli police said was a response to rioting.

The incident sparked protests across the occupied West Bank and the Israeli military said nine rockets were fired from Gaza toward Israel after sirens blared in southern towns.

Violence in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem has surged over the past year and there is concern that tensions could escalate this month, as the Muslim holy month of Ramadan coincides with Judaism’s Passover and Christian Easter.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said seven Palestinians sustained wounds from rubber-tipped bullets and beatings in clashes with Israeli police at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound. It added that Israeli forces were preventing its medics from reaching the mosque.

“I was sitting on a chair reciting (Qur’an),” an elderly woman told Reuters outside the mosque, struggling to catch her breath. “They hurled stun grenades, one of them hit my chest,” she said as she began to cry.

Israeli police said in a statement that it was forced to enter the compound after masked agitators locked themselves inside the mosque with fireworks, sticks and stones.

“When the police entered, stones were thrown at them and fireworks were fired from inside the mosque by a large group of agitators,” the statement said, adding that a police officer was wounded in the leg.

Friction at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, has set off violence in recent years.

Palestinian groups condemned Israel’s attacks on worshippers, which they described as a crime.

“We warn the occupation against crossing red lines at holy sites, which will lead to a big explosion,” said Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesperson for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Jordan and Egypt, both involved in recent US-backed efforts to de-escalate tensions between Israel and the Palestinians, issued separate statements condemning the incident.

Videos circulating on social media, which Reuters could not immediately verify, showed fireworks going off and police beating people inside the mosque. The Israeli military said nine rockets were fired from Gaza toward Israel, of which at least four were intercepted and four landed in open areas.

The United States' ability to justify their foreign policy interventions as part of upholding "democracy" around the world is gone after former President Donald Trump, a Republican, is being prosecuted by a Democratic Manhattan district attorney, El Salvadorian President Nayib Bukele said in a statement.

"Think what you want about former President Trump and the reasons he’s being indicted. But just imagine if this happened in any other country, where a government arrested the main opposition candidate. The United States ability to use 'democracy' as foreign policy is gone," Bukele wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.

Trump has been charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree in connection to his alleged involvement in a $130,000 hush money payment and subsequent cover-up involving a purported affair with adult film star Stormy Daniels, among others.

Trump pleaded not guilty to the charges during his arraignment earlier in the day. A US judge during Trump’s initial appearance in court said that a trial in his case could start in January 2024, media reported.

Trump's arrest artfully constructed to prevent him from a new race for the White House - Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has decried the prosecution of Trump, arguing that US Democrats are using the legal system to block a political opponent from being elected. “This is completely anti-democratic... Why not allow the people to decide?”

The crime of which the former US president is accused, Donald Trump, and which today could cost him his arrest, is artfully "manufactured" to prevent him from running again for the White House. The president of Mexico said, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, defining what is allegedly being built around Trump as a "completely undemocratic" maneuver.

“Right now, former President Trump is declaring and they could arrest him. If that were the case, since no one was born yesterday, it would be because his name doesn't appear on the ballot paper,” Lopez Obrador said during the traditional daily press conference.

“I say this because I too have suffered from the fabrication of a crime, when they didn't want me to run. And this is completely anti-democratic,” the Mexican president said. “Why not allow the people to decide” who governs them, asks Lopez Obrador.

Trump's side in controversies related to his public demonstrations. In January 2021, Lopez Obrador had censured, for example, Twitter's decision to block Trump's profile, for references made to the ongoing protests at the Capitol.

“One thing I didn't like is the censorship. I don't like anyone being censored and deprived of their right to broadcast messages, on Twitter or on Facebook“.

“I don't agree with this,” the president underlined. “We must all limit ourselves, and guarantee freedom”, continued the president, stigmatizing the mechanism according to which “I censor you and you can no longer broadcast. We are in favor of freedoms. One of the most important things of recent times, a revolution, has been precisely the fact that freedoms have been guaranteed with social networks. People were able to communicate freely, without censorship", "circular communication was inaugurated, and there can be no steps backwards", Lopez Obrador underlined.

Former US President Donald Trump has pleaded not guilty to 34 felony charges during a court hearing in New York.

The former president was accused of falsifying records to conceal crimes in the almost hour-long hearing.

Judge Juan Merchan did not issue a gag order – but asked both sides to be mindful of their language and rhetoric.

Trump – running for the presidency in 2024 – will be released on bail and plans to return to Florida later.

What to know about the charges The court filing says the former president “with intent to defraud and intent to commit another crime and aid and conceal the commission thereof, made and caused a false entry in the business records of an enterprise.”

The charges against Trump are all Class E felonies. That is the lowest category of felony offence in New York and carries a maximum prison sentence of four years per count.

Falsifying business records is usually prosecuted as a misdemeanour.

The Manhattan district attorney’s office is escalating the charge by alleging the offence was committed in order to conceal or commit another crime.

In the courtroom: Trump expressionless in sober hearing.

Shortly after 14:30 local time, Donald Trump walked into the courtroom escorted by several secret service members. His face was expressionless and his steps were heavy and slow.

He sat in the front row for proceedings. It was short of fireworks, and was very official. There was no circus-like atmosphere.

The judge presided in a calm and even tone and never raised his voice. He spoke politely and calmly and firmly to Donald Trump, making sure the former president understood his rights.

Trump sat silently throughout almost the entire proceedings. He only spoke when he was required to, either by pleading not guilty or by answering to the judge when addressed directly.

Trump repeatedly falsified business records – prosecutor

The 34-count indictment of Donald Trump has been released by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

He accuses Trump of repeatedly falsifying business records to conceal crimes. Trump has pleaded not guilty on all charges.

In a statement, Bragg said:

“The People of the State of New York allege that Donald J. Trump repeatedly and fraudulently falsified New York business records to conceal crimes that hid damaging information from the voting public during the 2016 presidential election.”

“Manhattan is home to the country’s most significant business market. We cannot allow New York businesses to manipulate their records to cover up criminal conduct.

“As the Statement of Facts describes, the trail of money and lies exposes a pattern that, the People allege, violates one of New York’s basic and fundamental business laws.”

No gag order placed on Trump

The judge has not placed a gag order on Donald Trump but warned him that the issue would be revisited if the ex-president continued with his heated rhetoric about the case.

A gag order would have prohibited Trump, his attorneys, other parties and witnesses from speaking about the case publicly.

It usually happens when there’s a risk that statements could be made that could incite violence or be viewed as threatening to prosecutors or witnesses.

Violating a gag order means you can be found to be in criminal contempt of court.

The U.S. banking crisis is ongoing and will have effects for years to come, JPMorgan Chase & Co CEO Jamie Dimon wrote in a letter to shareholders on Tuesday.

"The current crisis is not yet over, and even when it is behind us, there will be repercussions from it for years to come," Dimon wrote in a 43-page annual message covering a range of topics from JPMorgan's performance to geopolitics and regulation.

Storm clouds are still threatening the economy as they did a year ago, said Dimon, the chief executive of the largest U.S. lender. And the banking system is under renewed stress after the failure of Silicon Valley Bank and Credit Suisse's rescue by UBS last month.

"The market's odds of a recession have increased," Dimon wrote. "And while this is nothing like 2008, it is not clear when this current crisis will end. It has provoked lots of jitters in the market and will clearly cause some tightening of financial conditions as banks and other lenders become more conservative."

Even so, it is unclear whether the disruptions will slow the consumer spending that drives the U.S. economy, Dimon wrote.

The risks that led to the current crisis were "hiding in plain sight," Dimon wrote, citing the interest rate exposure and level of uninsured deposits at Silicon Valley Bank.

But he downplayed similarities to the global financial crisis. While the 2008 crash hit large banks, mortgage lenders and insurers with global interconnections, "this current banking crisis involves far fewer financial players and fewer issues that need to be resolved," Dimon said.

After taking the helm of JPMorgan in 2006, Dimon presided over the bank's crisis-era acquisitions of troubled investment bank Bear Stearns and of Washington Mutual, the savings and loan whose failure was the largest in U.S. history.

As the current crisis unfolded, Dimon again played a central role, helping to arrange a $30 billion lifeline for First Republic Bank from 11 large lenders.

JPMorgan, Bank of America Corp, Citigroup and Wells Fargo & Co committed $5 billion each, followed by Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs, with $2.5 billion apiece.

Any new regulations in response to the latest turmoil should be "thoughtful," including clearer rules for dealing with failed banks, Dimon wrote. "Erratic stress test capital requirements and constant uncertainty around future regulations damage the banking system without making it safer."

Dimon also took aim at nonbank financial firms, which have become increasingly competitive with banks in providing mortgages, credit cards and market-making.

"Would nonbank credit-providing institutions be able to provide credit when their clients need them the most?" he asked. "I personally doubt that many of them could."
