France riots - Ministry says quieter overnight, 719 arrested

Arrests during a fifth night of rioting over the police killing of a teenager in France have risen to 719, the interior ministry said Sunday.

France has seen a quieter night of protests over the death of a teenager shot by police at point-blank range, the interior minister says.

In the Paris suburb L'Haÿ-les-Roses, attackers rammed a car into the house of the mayor, injuring his wife as she tried to flee with their two children.

French cities have seen unrest since the police shooting of a teenager

The government poured 45,000 police onto the streets to try to keep a lid on a fifth night of unrest after Saturday's funeral of Nahel, a 17-year-old with Algerian and Moroccan parents, who was shot during a traffic stop on Tuesday in the Paris suburb of Nanterre.

Since then rioters have torched cars and looted stores, but also targeted town halls, police stations and schools - buildings that represent the French state.

President Emmanuel Macron postponed a state visit to Germany that was due to have begun on Sunday to handle the worst crisis for his leadership since the "Yellow Vest" protests paralysed much of France in late 2018.

He was due to meet his ministers on Sunday evening to review the situation, the presidency said, after the prime minister said on Friday the government's "crisis unit" had been activated until further notice.

Nahel's death has fed longstanding complaints of police violence and systemic racism inside law enforcement agencies from rights groups and within the low-income, racially mixed suburbs that ring major cities in France. Authorities deny that.

An officer has acknowledged firing a lethal shot, the prosecutor says, telling investigators he wanted to prevent a police chase, fearing he or another person would be hurt. The officer involved is under investigation for voluntary homicide.

The interior ministry said 719 people were arrested on Saturday night, fewer than the 1,311 the previous night and 875 on Thursday night.

"Forty-five thousand police officers and thousands of firefighters have been mobilised to enforce order. Their action ... made for a quieter night," the ministry said on Twitter.

Paris' police chief said it was too early to say the unrest had been quashed. "There was evidently less damage but we will remain mobilised in the coming days. We are very focused, nobody is claiming victory," Laurent Nunez said.

The biggest flashpoint overnight was Marseille, where police fired teargas and fought street battles with youths around the city centre late into the night.

China, along with some Western nations, has warned its citizens to be vigilant due to the unrest, which could pose a significant challenge for France in the peak summer tourist season if it were to escalate around city centre landmarks.

China's Consulate General lodged a formal complaint to France after a bus carrying a Chinese tour group had its windows smashed in on Thursday, leading to minor injuries, China's Consular Affairs Office said on Sunday.

MAYOR'S HOME ATTACKED

In Paris, police increased security overnight at the city's famous Champs Elysees avenue after a call on social media to gather there. The street, usually packed with tourists, was lined with security forces carrying out spot checks. Shop facades were boarded up to prevent potential damage.

At least one cafe terrace there was evacuated due to the clashes.

There were sporadic clashes elsewhere in central Paris. Paris police said six public buildings were damaged and five officers wounded overnight. Some 315 people were arrested in the city.

In the greater Paris region, the home of the conservative mayor of L'Hay-les-Roses was ram-raided, and his wife and one of his children were injured as they escaped. The local prosecutor said an investigation into attempted murder had been opened.

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne visited the area on Sunday to renew the call for an end to the "unacceptable" violence.

There was also unrest in the Mediterranean city of Nice and Strasbourg in the east.

Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said on Saturday around 10 malls had been attacked and looted in the wave of unrest. He said more than 200 supermarkets had been attacked, around 15 of which had been burned down, with tobacconists, banks, fashion stores, sports shops and fast food outlets also being targeted.

Since the unrest erupted, Macron - re-elected in 2022 - has been forced to postpone his trip to Germany and leave an EU summit early. He has called on social media platforms to cooperate with the authorities to help identify those who "promote violence".

Yann Wernert, of the Jacques Delors Institute think-tank in Berlin, said the postponed visit highlighted the unrest's impact on Macron's ability to conduct foreign policy.

"The state visit can be made up for later, but the violent protests and the reactions to them also show how charged the political mood in France is at the moment," he said.

Taliban calls report 'unjust' ranked Afghanistan as the least peaceful country in the world from IEP

The Taliban has criticized the Institute for Economics and Peace's 'Global Peace Index 2022' findings, which ranked Afghanistan as the least peaceful country in the world. The report stated that Afghanistan saw a significant reduction in deaths from armed conflict in 2022, but the security situation remains uncertain. The Taliban spokesperson claimed that terrorist incidents have reduced by more than 99% compared to what is stated in the report.

The Taliban has reacted to the 'Global Peace Index 2022' of the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) and called the findings related to Afghanistan "unjust", Afghanistan-based TOLO News reported.

The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) in the 'Global Peace Index 2022' said that Afghanistan is the "least peaceful country in the world for the fifth consecutive year, followed by Yemen, Syria, Russia and South Sudan." All these countries have remained among the ten least peaceful nations for the past three years.

According to IEP, Afghanistan recorded the largest reduction in deaths from armed conflict in 2022 with conflict deaths from almost 43,000 to just more than 4,000, TOLO News reported.

"Afghanistan recorded the fifth largest improvement in peacefulness in the 2023 GPI, however, it remains the least peaceful country in the world. Although violence is still widespread throughout the country, the level of conflict has dropped considerably since the withdrawal of US troops in August 2021, and the subsequent Taliban takeover of the government," it said.

The IEP noted that the perceptions regarding the criminality of Afghan nationals have improved slightly. It said that the number of people who say they felt unsafe walking alone reduced from 84 per cent to 77 per cent, according to TOLO News report.

The Index said that terrorist incidents in Afghanistan reduced by 75 per cent in 2022 and deaths from terrorism reduced by 58 per cent. The IEP stressed that the security situation in Afghanistan remains uncertain "with an escalation in conflict between ISK and the Taliban remaining a strong possibility."

The IEP said that the security situation in Afghanistan remains uncertain, “with an escalation in conflict between ISK and the Taliban remaining a strong possibility.”

“Various terrorist groups can take advantage of the poverty and misery of people and can bring back the proxy war of the world’s power to our soil and can make Afghanistan insecure,” said Andar Khan Ahmad, political analyst.

According to the IEP, while the conflict in Ukraine has had wide media coverage, a number of other internal conflicts around the world have recorded substantial declines in deaths, such as in Afghanistan, Syria, Nigeria and Somali.

Russian forces have destroyed a Ukrainian Starlink satellite communication station and a drone control center near Artemovsk (Bakhmut), a Russian Defense Ministry spokesperson told.

"... the artillery of the group [of Russian forces] destroyed a Starlink communication station, a control center for unmanned aerial vehicles together with a Leleka-100 drone, a communication center and a pickup truck with an infantry group," the spokesperson said. In addition, Russian forces have repelled an attack by a Ukrainian assault group near the village of Berkhovka in the Artemovsk area.

Russia launched its special military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, after the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics appealed for help in defending themselves against Ukrainian provocations. In response to Russia’s operation, Western countries have rolled out a comprehensive sanctions campaign against Moscow and have been supplying weapons to Ukraine.

On September 30, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin and the heads of the Donetsk and Lugansk people's republics, as well as Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, signed agreements on the accession of these territories to Russia, following referendums that showed that an overwhelming majority of the local population supported becoming part of Russia.

Ukraine launched its long-advertised counteroffensive in early June after multiple postponements. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Ukrainian troops continue to try but are failing to advance along three directions: South Donetsk, Artemovsk and Zaporozhye, the latter being of primary focus.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation will hold an emergency open-ended meeting on Sunday to discuss the repercussions of burning a copy of Al-Qur’an in Sweden on the first day of Eid Al-Adha, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Saturday.

The meeting, which will be held at the OIC’s headquarters in Jeddah, was called following an invitation from Saudi Arabia — the chairman of the Islamic Summit in its current session and the OIC’s Executive Committee.

There has been widespread outrage and condemnation in the Muslim and Arab world since Salwan Momika, 37, a refugee from Iraq, desecrated the Qur’an and set fire to its pages in front of Stockholm’s largest mosque on Wednesday.

The “meeting is scheduled to discuss measures against these despicable acts to express a united position against the desecration of the Holy Qur’an,” the statement said.

The OIC warned of the seriousness of these acts, which undermine mutual respect and harmony among peoples and contradict international efforts to spread the values of tolerance, moderation and rejection of extremism.

The organization urged the governments of the countries concerned to take effective measures to prevent their recurrence, denouncing the repetition of these “despicable attacks” and all attempts to desecrate the sanctity of the Qur’an and other Islamic values, symbols and sanctities.

The OIC reaffirmed the obligation that all states have undertaken, under the UN Charter, to promote and encourage universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, without distinction of race, sex, language or religion.

It noted the need to ensure that everyone exercises the right to freedom of expression with “responsibility and in accordance with relevant international human rights laws,” stressing the importance of promoting dialogue, understanding and cooperation between religions, cultures and civilizations for global peace and harmony.

Sejarah menyeluruh paparan merkuri sangat penting.
