Seventy-one Chinese military aircraft crossed the sensitive median line of the Taiwan Strait on Saturday as China began drills around Taiwan in anger at President Tsai Ing-wen's meeting with the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The three-day drills, announced the day after Tsai returned from the United States, had been widely expected after Beijing condemned her Wednesday meeting with Speaker Kevin McCarthy in Los Angeles.

China views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory and has never renounced the use of force to bring the island under its control. Taiwan's government strongly objects to China's claims.

Beijing's announcement also came just hours after China hosted a visit by senior European leaders.

The People's Liberation Army said it had started the combat readiness patrols and "Joint Sword" exercises around Taiwan, having said earlier it would be holding them in the Taiwan Strait and to the north, south and east of Taiwan "as planned".

"This is a serious warning to the Taiwan independence separatist forces and external forces' collusion and provocation, and it is a necessary action to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity," the Chinese army's Eastern Theatre Command said in a statement.

Taiwan's Defence Ministry said as of 4 p.m. (0800 GMT) on Saturday it spotted 71 Chinese aircraft, including fighter jets and bombers, crossing the median line that normally serves as an unofficial barrier between the two sides, as well as nine Chinese ships.

China was using Tsai's U.S. visit "as an excuse to carry out military exercises, which has seriously damaged regional peace, stability and security", the ministry said in a statement.

"The military will respond with a calm, rational and serious attitude, and will stand guard and monitor in accordance with the principles of 'not escalating nor disputes' to defend national sovereignty and national security."

Chinese state television released what it said was footage of the drills, set to stirring martial music and showing warships at sea and mobile missile launchers being readied, though did not show missiles being fired. It said fighter aircraft went up armed with live weapons.

Reuters media could not establish when or where the material was shot.

SITUATION 'AS EXPECTED'

There was no broader sense of alarm in Taiwan about the drills, where people are long accustomed to Chinese threats.

China had threatenedunspecified retaliation if the meeting with McCarthy - second in line to succeed the U.S. president, after the vice president - were to take place. Beijing staged war games around Taiwan, including live-fire missile launches, in August after then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei.

A senior Taiwan official familiar with security planning in the region told Reuters the aircraft involved in the morning missions had only crossed the median line briefly.

The situation was "as expected" and manageable, and Taiwan's government has rehearsed various scenarios for its response, the person said on condition of anonymity, as they were not authorised to speak to the media.

Reuters reporters in a seaside area near Fuzhou, opposite the Taiwan-controlled Matsu islands, saw a Chinese warship firing shells onto a drill area on China's coast, part of drills announced by China late on Friday.

Writing on her Facebook page, Tsai said she was briefed about the security situation and that the military was at its post around the clock.

"Taiwan will stand with all democracy-loving partners in the world and jointly assume the responsibility of ensuring regional stability and prosperity," she added.

Tsai has repeatedly offered talks with China but has been rebuffed as the government views her as a separatist. She says only Taiwan's people can decide their future.

The People's Daily, the official newspaper of China's ruling Communist Party, said in a commentary on Saturday that the government has "a strong ability to thwart any form of Taiwan independence secession".

"All countermeasures taken by the Chinese government belong to China's legitimate and legal right to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity," it said.

DIPLOMACY AND DRILLS

Unlike in August, China has yet to announce whether it will also stage missile drills. When China announced the previous drills, it published a map showing which maritime areas near Taiwan it would be firing into.

The security source said April is when China typically carries out military exercises.

Taiwanese officials had expected a less severe reaction to the McCarthy meeting, given it took place in the United States, but they had said they could not rule out the possibility of China staging more drills.

China's announcement came hours after French President Emmanuel Macron left China, where he met President Xi Jinping and other senior leaders. Macron urged Beijing to talk sense to Russia over the war in Ukraine.

European Union chief Ursula von der Leyen, also in China this week to meet Xi, said stability in the Taiwan Strait was of paramount importance.

Xi responded by saying that expecting China to compromise on Taiwan was "wishful thinking", according to China's official reading of the meeting.

China's defence ministry, alongside the announcement of the drills around Taiwan also showed pictures on its home page of Xi meeting Macron and von der Leyen.

The Taiwan security source said China's recent efforts to charm foreign leaders proved in vain after the announcement of the drills.

"Upon the announcement of drills in the strait, all those efforts have vanished overnight and become a wasted effort."

By speaking against deployment of nuclear weapons beyond national territory, French President Emmanuel Macron effectively criticized the US policy, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in an interview, partially uploaded to journalist Pavel Zarubin’s Telegram channel.

"It has been a long time since we’ve heard such fierce criticism towards the United States of American from the President of France," the spokesman noted ironically, commenting on Macron’s remarks.

Speaking earlier at a joint press conference with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Macron stated that France opposes deployment of nuclear weapons outside of nuclear powers’ national territory.

On March 25, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that, under a request from Belarus, Russia will deploy its tactical nuclear weapons in the republic, just like the US has been doing on its allies’ territory for a long time.

Ukraine to cease to exist because it is not needed to anyone, Medvedev says

Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev believes that no-one in the world needs Ukraine, therefore it will cease to exist, he said in his post on social media Saturday.

The post, titled "Why Ukraine will cease to exist? Because nobody needs it," is divided into six parts, in which Medvedev explains why the Ukrainian state is not needed to Europe, the US, Africa, Latin America, Asia, Russia and, finally, Ukrainian people themselves.

Across the continents

Talking about Europe, Medvedev opined that the attempt to put "young Ukrainian blood-sucking parasites one the arthritic neck of the decrepit EU" will become the final downfall of the "previously royal, but now impoverished, due to degeneration, Europe." According to the official, the "forced support of the Nazi regime under command of the American mentor has already created true financial and political hell for the Europeans," and its consequences, including "unprofitable Russian sanctions," have already led to outbursts of discontent in both Western and Eastern Europe. Meanwhile, even the Poles "do not treat Ukraine as a normal country and float the idea of Anschluss of Western regions from time to time," Medvedev underscores.

Meanwhile, American people will sooner or later bring its political establishment to answer, why it is occupied with "a country unknown to them," instead of domestic American issues, Medvedev opined, noting that the "2021 storm of the Capitol will look like boy scout games in comparison."

"Regular Americans have absolutely no idea, what ‘Ukraine’ is and where ‘it’ is located. Most of them wouldn’t even be able to immediately pinpoint this ‘state’ on the map," Medvedev noted. As for other parts of the world, Medvedev believes that the "hundreds of billions that the US spends on pointless fighting somewhere in Ukraine, would have been enough to fund many programs, aimed at social development of Latin American and African states."

Ukraine is "also not needed to Asia," since Asian states see it on Russia’s example "how color [revolution] technologies are being honed in order to take down the largest competitor states," and "understand what fate has the collective West, led by America, has prepared for them in case of disobedience:" "Help us deal with Russia, and then we will soon come to you."

In addition, Medvedev continue, giant Asian states have enough problems rebuilding the economy after the pandemic, therefore they refuse to blindly support Ukraine and isolate Russia, "a country that is geopolitically much closer to Asian powers and that has historically proven itself as a reliable strategic partner."

In Russia and Ukraine

Medvedev called the current Ukrainian state a "misconception, created by the dissolution of the Soviet Union." "Millions of our compatriots that have been harassed by the Nazi Kiev regime for years live here. It is them whom we protect with the special military operation, ruthlessly eliminating the enemy," the official noted. "And this is why this sub-Ukraine is not needed for us. We need a Big Great Russia," the political said.

As for the Ukrainians themselves, Medvedev assessed that there are only slightly over 20 million out of 45 million of them still left in the country, and the remaining Ukrainians "Are forced to live in constant anxiety and fear" and "are willing to go anywhere."

"This kind of Ukraine is not needed to anyone on the plant. And this is why it will cease to exist," the author concludes.

Chechen leader details why Ukraine counteroffensive would benefit Russia

A much-talked-about spring counteroffensive by Ukraine would actually benefit Russia, as Moscow’s troops would have an opportunity to fight in more favorable conditions, Ramzan Kadyrov, the head of the Chechen Republic, suggested on Saturday.

In a Telegram post, Kadyrov said he was surprised by “empty speculation” and concern swirling around Kiev’s supposed plans to launch an offensive, which is widely expected to kick off within several weeks.

“Personally, I’m all for it. For a successful counteroffensive, they need large resources; losses among the attackers are inevitable. At the same time, we have taken up favorable and fortified positions,” he wrote.

The Chechen leader also factored that Russia had honed its tactics and could predict Ukraine’s maneuvers on the battlefield. “The defensive position of our troops will allow us to use fewer resources,” he noted.

Kadyrov reasoned that the counteroffensive by Kiev's forces “and NATO mercenaries will play into our hands on all counts.” He added that “trophies, foreign technology samples, crowds of POWs, who, as always, [claim to be] field cooks or electricians while being filmed” would be “the cherry on top.”

Rumors about an upcoming counteroffensive by Kiev have been circulating for months, fueled by Ukrainian and Western officials alike. On Friday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken suggested that Kiev’s attack could begin in the next few weeks while last month Ukrainian Defense Minister Aleksey Reznikov predicted that it would start in April or May and could develop in several directions.

However, in late March, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky admitted that Kiev was still lacking enough ammunition to launch an offensive. That same month, General Mark Milley, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that Kiev would have an extremely hard time recapturing all its former territories from Russia.

This week, Mikhail Podoliak, an aide to Zelensky, made the additional claim that Kiev intends to seize Crimea within seven months, while also stating that Ukraine “must eradicate everything Russian” on the peninsula. Crimea overwhelmingly voted to join Russia in 2014, after a Western-backed coup in Kiev.

On Friday, commenting on Blinken’s remarks about the anticipated counteroffensive, Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov noted that the Russian military “thoroughly tracks all relevant information” on the matter.

Ukrainian missile downed over Crimea – governor

Russian air defenses have shot down a Ukrainian missile over Crimea, local authorities said on Saturday, adding that the strike did not result in any casualties or damage to infrastructure.

In a Telegram post, Sergey Aksenov, the head of the Republic of Crimea, said “a missile launched from Ukraine’s side” had been destroyed over the coastal town of Feodosia in the southeastern part of the peninsula.

Later, Oleg Kryuchkov, a senior adviser to Aksenov, issued an update on the incident, claiming that “the debris of a Ukrainian missile downed by air defenses fell in one of the Crimean settlements. There are no casualties or destruction.”

Amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict, Crimea, which hosts major Russian naval facilities, has repeatedly become the target of Kiev’s strikes. Last month, local authorities said Russian air defenses had shot down several Ukrainian drones over the town of Dzhankoy, with one person injured during the raid. The aircraft debris also damaged a house and a shop in the area, they added.

A missile launched from Ukraine was shot down over Feodosia - the head of the Crimea, Sergey Aksyonov.

The peninsula, which overwhelmingly voted to become part of Russia in 2014 after a Western-backed coup in Kiev, could also become the target of a potential Ukrainian spring counteroffensive, according to Ukrainian officials. Mikhail Podoliak, a senior aide to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, claimed earlier this week that Kiev could retake Crimea within seven months, adding that it “must eradicate everything Russian” on the peninsula.

Last month, however, former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev warned that any attempt by Kiev to seize Crimea could warrant the deployment of “all means of protection,” including Moscow’s nuclear assets.

'It Was So Scary': Footage Captures Moment Trees Fall Over During US Masters Golf Tourney

Volunteers secure the area around where a tree fell near the 17th tee during Friday's second round of the Masters.

Two huge pine trees fell right during the Masters 2023 golf tournament near the 17th hole at Augusta National. The incident occurred during the second qualifying round, and was captured on video via live broadcast.

The Masters tournament was hit by a terrifying incident when three large pine trees fell down due to high winds and stormy weather. Spectators near holes 16th and 17th managed to narrowly escape injury amid the falling nearby trees.

The Masters confirmed that no one was injured, but "the second round has been officially suspended for the rest of the day. Play will resume Saturday morning at 8:00 am (12pm BST)". A statement from the Masters also stressed that Augusta National Golf Club will continue to closely monitor the weather for the safety and well-being of who attends tournament.

"I was waiting for the next group to come up to the tee and it fell maybe eight to 10 chairs to our left. I stood up and screamed and thought, 'Is it going to fall on me?' It fell to the left of us, and it was so scary. If the wind had been blowing a slightly different direction, we might have got hit," recalled Megan Hill, an eyewitness.

Masters ground staff immediately began to cut the fallen trees with chainsaws after players and spectators were taken off the course.

"Augusta National Golf Club can confirm that no injuries were reported from three trees that were blown over to the left of the No. 17 tee due to wind," The Masters said in a bulletin on Saturday evening.

"The safety and well-being of everyone attending the Masters Tournament will always be the top priority of the Club. We will continue to closely monitor weather today and through the Tournament.

"The Second Round has been officially suspended for the rest of the day. Play will resume Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. EDT. Ticket gates will open at 7:00 a.m. EDT as scheduled."

This was the second time play had been suspended due to the storms, following an earlier threat of lightning at the course. Due to the storm alert officials moved all starting times up 30 minutes in the hopes of getting the second round in as scheduled.

A tree shown blown down at The Masters

According to The Augusta Chronicle, Masters patron Megan Hill said: "I was sitting, looking, waiting for the next group to come up to the tee and it fell maybe 8-10 chairs to our left. I stood up and screamed and thought, 'Is it going to fall on me? It fell to the left of us and it was so scary. If the wind had been blowing a slightly different direction, we might have got hit."

At 4.22pm EDT, Augusta National Golf Club was forced to suspend play due to inclement weather conditions, with the grounds evacuated because of the storms that were incoming.

Earlier in the round, there had already been a delay of just 21 minutes, as players briefly left the course only to return to their previous positions. Upon return, play carried on for about an hour, with players starting to face the brunt of the wind and rain, as it began to pick up.

Such was the power of the wind, viewers noticed a chair cover being blowing down the 10th fairway as Justin Thomas, Cameron Young and Jon Rahm struck their tee shots. Certainly, on the broadcast, it was obvious that the conditions were getting worse and, as the hooter blew, the scary footage of the three trees falling came on screen for around 10 seconds.

Initial reports suggested that, almost miraculously, nobody had been injured in a crowd estimated to be 40,000 and that a freak gust had uprooted the giant conifers thought to be more than 100 years old. Augusta National Golf Club later confirmed that there were indeed no injuries.

"It sounded like a grandstand blew over, super loud," said Sergio Garcia, who was on the green at the 15th.

"Two trees fell down from the roots and took another one on the way down. People scattered around them but there was one woman that the trees fell around her and somehow she didn't get hurt. Thank God."

Nick Faldo and Paul McGinley, who were working for Sky Sports, remarked that it was fortunate no one was hurt.

"Oh my goodness, my goodness, that is so fortunate. There were plenty of people around, that would've been nasty... We're really lucky that nobody was... that was lucky," said Faldo.

McGinley added: "That could've killed people easily... Because it's not that windy out there is it? Did it get hit by lightning?"

Storms had been forecast but the season’s first major had appeared to have escaped when a suspension was made at 3.07m. The pause lasted only 21 minutes and the afternoon wave had been playing again for more than an hour when the drama occurred.

Grounds workers with chainsaws were dispatched to remove the trees, which were blocking the 17th tee.

Fears have long existed that an incident of this nature could occur. In 2014, a 65ft loblolly pine nicknamed “The Eisenhower Tree” after the former US President Dwight Eisenhower - an Augusta member who hit the pine, also on the 17th, so often he once requested it be cut down - was irrevocably damaged in a storm.

There will obviously be concerns that this might not prove an isolated episode, especially with poor weather due on the weekend.

A statement released by the Augusta National Golf Club confirmed that although play was over for the day, it would resume on Saturday with fans admitted as usual.

"Augusta National Golf Club can confirm that no injuries were reported from the three trees that were blown over to the left of the No, 17 tee due to wind. The safety and well-being of everyone attending the Masters Tournament will always be the top priority of the Club, which will continue to closely monitor weather today and through the Tournament.

"The Second Round has officially been suspended for the rest of the day. Play will resume Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m EDT. Ticket gates will open at 7:00 a.m. EDT as scheduled."

Rory McIlroy had already gone back down Magnolia Lane when the second hooter sounded, after shooting a 77 to stand on five-over and looking likely to miss his second Masters cut in three years.

The Masters Tournament is the first of four major golf tournaments. It is held annually on the course of the National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. Since 1949, the champion is presented with a green jacket, which must be returned to the Augusta National one year after his victory

Later in the day, Hamas announced a call between its international relations chief, Musa Abu Marzouq, and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, who serves as the Kremlin's special envoy for the Middle East, "to discuss the Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip and Lebanon."

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also addressed the issue during a press conference that followed talks with his Turkish counterpart in Ankara. He called for a solution that would incorporate the Arab League and the Quartet on the Middle East, which includes Russia, the United States, the European Union and the United Nations.

A missile launched from Ukraine was downed over Feodosiya on the eastern coast of Crimea, Head of the republic Sergey Aksyonov said on his Telegram channel Saturday.

"A missile launched from Ukraine was downed over Feodosiya," he said.

Previously, Aksyonov’s advisor on informational policy Oleg Kryuchkov announced that, according to preliminary information, air defense systems went off in the Feodosiya area on Crimean coast Saturday.

Fragments of the downed missile dropped in a Crimean settlement, but caused no injuries or damage, Kryuchkov said.

In the recent weeks, Ukraine attempted to attack Crimean infrastructure with drones several times. On March 21, fragments damaged several buildings and injured a man. According to Kryuchkov, the attack targeted civilian objects, because there are no civilian objects in the area. On March 22, marine drones attempted to enter the bay of Sevastopol, but the Black Sea Fleet repelled the attack. On March 29, a drone was downed near Simferopol; the drone crashed in a field, causing no injuries or damage.
