World Cup winners Argentina will visit Indonesia next month for a friendly against its national team, its top football official said on Wednesday, in a boost for a country that has suffered a succession of recent soccer setbacks.

The visit will be part of an Asian tour by the South American side that also includes a June 15 stop in Beijing for a friendly against Australia.

The announcement comes at a time when Argentina is hosting the Under-20 World Cup as a replacement for Muslim-majority Indonesia, which in March was stripped of the tournament over domestic resistance to the participation of Israel.

The friendly will take place eight months after Indonesia suffered one of the world's deadliest stadium stampedes, with 135 people killed in a scramble to flee as police fired tear gas into the stands in Malang in East Java.

Though soccer is huge in the country of 270 million people, Indonesia has struggled to make its mark in the international game since a single World Cup appearance back in 1938 as the Dutch East Indies.

Its fans are, however, currently on a high from last week winning the gold medal at the South East Asian Games for the first time since 1991.

"This is great momentum for Indonesian soccer to maintain its resurgence," Erick Thohir, chief of the Indonesia football association (PSSI) told a press conference on the Argentina match.

Erick, a former owner of Serie A side Inter Milan, did not specify the date for the match, which Argentina's football association said on Twitter would be on June 19.

Asked if captain Lionel Messi would be coming to Indonesia, he said "I believe Argentina will bring their best team."

The visit had nothing to do with Argentina hosting the youth tournament instead of Indonesia, but was based on "mutual cooperation" between them, he said, adding Inter's former Argentine defender Javier Zanetti had played a role.

Argentina and Indonesia last met in the World Youth Championship in Japan in 1979, a match in which the great Diego Maradona played. Indonesia lost 5-0.

Want to Play Messi’s Argentina? Prepare to Pay Up.

All told, there were around a dozen offers for officials at Argentina’s national soccer federation to contemplate. They came, largely, from the game’s commercially lucrative emerging markets: the United States, China, Australia, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates. The only outlier, really, was an unlikely bid from Bangladesh.

Each suitor wanted the same thing — the chance to host Lionel Messi and Argentina in one of two designated windows for friendly matches this summer — but all had their own motivation. Some were inspired by the sporting prestige of gracing the same field as the World Cup champions. For others, the potential benefits strayed into the political.

They were all, though, prepared to pay for the privilege. Each offer promised the A.F.A., Argentina’s soccer federation, not just a slice of ticket sales, television rights and commercial revenue from the games, but an eye-watering appearance fee, too.

Five months since it won the World Cup in Qatar, Argentina has become the most in-demand, and possibly the most expensive, opponent in international soccer. The going rate for a single game with the world champion has climbed so high that $5 million is now just the starting point, according to officials with knowledge of the discussions.

The identity of the winning bids for the two matches in June is not yet official. The A.F.A. is continuing to assess its options, and will only make a firm decision once Lionel Scaloni, the national team’s coach, indicates he is comfortable with their plans.

Sources inside a number of the national associations involved, though, have suggested that the most likely schedule is for Argentina to play its first game in China — possibly against Australia, pending Scaloni’s approval — and then travel to Indonesia for a game against a host team currently ranked 149th in the world. ,

Those matchups illustrate the extent to which the benefits of a meeting with the reigning world champion stretch far beyond the sporting. Such is Argentina’s cachet, in light of its victory in Qatar, that Australia’s soccer authorities have been encouraged to agree to host a game in China in the hope that it might strengthen political and economic ties between the countries, according to an official involved in the talks. The Indonesia game could be seen as a similarly pragmatic reward: Last month, Argentina stepped in as host of this year’s Under-20 World Championship after Indonesia was stripped of the tournament over protests against Israel’s involvement.

That schedule would, however, mean passing on an encounter to play in the United States, though only for the time being. In recent years, the A.F.A. has embarked on a plan to increase both its commercial revenue and its reach — traditionally overshadowed by its archrival, Brazil — as part of a strategic attempt to capitalize on its global appeal.

Recent success has played into that. After lifting the Copa América trophy in 2021, its first major international honor since 1995 and Messi’s maiden championship with his country, Argentina could claim more sponsors and partners than any other national team on the planet.

That expanded again after Qatar. The A.F.A. has signed deals with four more partners, largely in India and Bangladesh, in the months since the World Cup. There has been a downstream effect for the country’s domestic league, too: It has more sponsors for this season than it has had at any point in its history.

It is the United States, though, that is Argentina’s “priority for the next four years,” said Leandro Petersen, the A.F.A.’s chief commercial and marketing officer. To deepen that connection, the federation plans to build a $10 million training facility in North Bay Village, Fla., a tiny outcrop of land between Miami and Miami Beach, to act as a gathering spot for its national teams during international breaks.

The complex may be just the first of a number of facilities in the United States: The A.F.A. is also considering establishing a physical presence in several other cities as part of what Petersen called a “landing strategy.”

Argentina’s national team is scheduled to play on American soil in both 2024 and 2026 — first to defend its Copa América crown, and later its World Cup championship — but the A.F.A. would like to make the team’s visits an annual event. It is likely to arrange at least one game in North America in 2025 as part of its preparations for the World Cup, and may even seek to face Mexico — which now plays the bulk of its friendlies in America — and the United States that year.

Neither nation would, in all likelihood, turn down that chance. After all, Argentina is now the biggest show in town: not only the world champion but, thanks to its nerve-shredding, emotional journey through Qatar, the most compelling team on the planet. Sharing the field with Messi and Co. these days, it would seem, is almost priceless.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is expected to make his long-awaited foray into the 2024 presidential race on Wednesday in an unusual manner - at an event with billionaire Elon Musk on Twitter.

His entry changes the shape of the contest for the Republican nomination, as he likely will emerge as former President Donald Trump’s biggest rival. The nominee will face President Joe Biden, a Democrat, in the November 2024 general election.

DeSantis, 44, also plans to file paperwork declaring his candidacy with the Federal Election Commission, aides said.

Musk, the CEO of Tesla and Twitter with 140 million Twitter followers, said his own appearance will not constitute an endorsement but will reflect his desire to make the service more of a town square.

The Twitter event is at 6 p.m. ET (2200 GMT).

DeSantis on Wednesday will also convene a meeting of his top donors at a Miami hotel, where they will immediately launch his fundraising efforts.

DeSantis’ central argument for his candidacy likely will be that he is the only Republican who can defeat Biden, the winner over Trump in the 2020 election.

“We must reject the culture of losing that has impacted our party in recent years. The time for excuses is over,” DeSantis said at an event in Iowa earlier this month.

In the weeks leading up to his presidential bid, DeSantis has toured the country, visiting states such as Iowa and New Hampshire that will hold early nominating contests. He has boasted of his record as Florida’s governor, including his battles with the federal government over pandemic policies.

His decision to wait until now to jump in has given Trump space to batter DeSantis with a series of attacks, costing the governor standing in national polls and frustrating some allies who might have preferred DeSantis step into the ring earlier.

DeSantis and his advisers were determined to wait to enter the race until the Florida Legislature could hand him a series of policy victories – and lawmakers have done just that.

He signed measures that severely restricted abortions in the state, made it easier for residents to carry concealed weapons, expanded a voucher program to allow students to attend private schools, and eliminated funding for diversity programs at public universities, among other things.

DeSantis remains in a pitched battle with Walt Disney Co over the company’s criticism of laws prohibiting the teaching of gender identity concepts in public schools. The company has filed a federal lawsuit accusing DeSantis of weaponizing state government to punish its operations.

Other declared Republican candidates include Nikki Haley, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, and Tim Scott, a U.S. senator from South Carolina.

Russia, together with other countries, will assuredly achieve a fair world order, whereas the model under which certain countries develop at the expense of others will become a thing of the past, Russian President Vladimir Putin said, greeting the participants in the 11th International Meeting of High-Level Officials Responsible for Security Issues.

"I am confident that, together, we will achieve the formation of a more equitable, multipolar world, while the ideology of exceptionalism as well as the neocolonial system, which has undergirded the exploitation of the resources of the entire world, will inevitably recede into the past," he noted.

Putin assured the foreign security officials that Russia was ready to engage in the closest level of interaction with all interested countries in efforts to counteract common threats and tackle the challenges that humankind is facing today.

"We highly appreciate the fact that Russia has numerous allies and partners across diverse regions and continents. We sincerely cherish our historically strong, friendly, and genuinely trust-based ties with Asian, African and Latin American countries, and we will continue to do all we can to strengthen them," he assured his audience.

For the benefit of all nations Separately, Putin talked about the significance of the conference for the global situation, noting that, over the years, regular interactions between security officials aimed at sharing their expertise and assessments have proven their utility and relevance, and have been instrumental in resolving key issues of regional and global security as well as strategic stability.

The Russian president also noted that the conference’s agenda is very intensive and substantive. Above all, the meeting’s participants will discuss the current global situation and the prospects for its further development, as well as analyze the most pressing contemporary threats. "Among them are international terrorism, extremism, illegal arms and drug trafficking, transnational crime and illegal migration. And, of course, issues pertaining to food and information security," the Russian leader elaborated.

Putin hoped that the meeting would be constructive and produce useful results, while helping to determine new methods and areas for practical cooperation "for the benefit of countries and peoples, and in the interest of peace and stability on the planet."

The meeting is being held in the Moscow Region on May 23-25. Russia’s delegation is headed by Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolay Patrushev.

NATO’s eastward expansion shares underlying intent with Hitlerian policies, Lavrov says

Behind NATO’s latest expansion push lie the same underlying intentions as the policies of Hitler, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at an international meeting of high-level officials responsible for security issues in Moscow on Wednesday.

"In essence, NATO’s reckless expansion reflects the same intentions that undergirded the Hitlerian doctrine of ‘Drang nach Osten’ (German for ‘Drive to the East,’ which was the Nazi slogan justifying the conquest of Central and Eastern European lands - TASS)," Lavrov said.

According to Russia’s top diplomat, the United States has purposefully set about destroying the architecture of European security, "while focusing in particular on engendering threats that are unacceptable to Russia." "It is enough just to mention the US withdrawal from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty more than 20 years ago, as well as from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty and from the Open Skies Treaty," he maintained.

Lavrov accused Washington and its allies of marginalizing the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), a body that he said no longer played any role in European security. The Russian foreign minister criticized the NATO countries’ "provocative" course toward relentlessly expanding the alliance eastward, which he said has been done in spite of the top-level Western pledges made to the then-leadership of the Soviet Union that NATO would not expand "one inch." Also, this policy "contravenes [Western countries’] commitments made at the highest level to refrain from bolstering their own security at the expense of the security of other [nations]," he lamented.

Russia against any attempts to stage color revolutions in Central Asia — diplomat

Russia will not tolerate any attempts to interfere in the affairs of Central Asian states in order to introduce color revolutions to the region, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said during a briefing Wednesday.

"We are ready to strengthen joint coordination on supporting Central Asian states in ensuring their sovereignty and national development," the diplomat pointed out. "We will not tolerate attempts to carry out color revolutions and external interference in the region’s affairs."

Zakharova pointed out that the US and its allies have intensified typical forms of pressure on Central Asia, which goes against the principle of non-interference in affairs of sovereign states.

"The collective West views interaction with regional countries primarily through the lens of promoting an anti-Russian and now anti-Chinese agenda as well," she added.

Dozens of Ukrainian saboteurs attempted to slip across the border into the Russian region of Belgorod on Monday. On Tuesday, the Russian military reported that the formations had been blocked and eliminated, with over 70 Ukrainian saboteurs killed, and four armored fighting vehicles and five pickups destroyed.

The Russian Defense Ministry has released footage showing the remains of a Ukrainian sabotage group force after heavy fighting with Russian troops.

The footage shows vehicles, some of them charred after being set ablaze, and others abandoned, riddled with bullets and driven into what look like makeshift anti-tank ditches.

Some of the vehicles have white crosses and the words "For Bakhmut" (another name for Artemovsk) written on them with spray paint.

Belgorod’s authorities have indicated that a civilian from the village of Kozinka died in the course of Ukrainian attacks, and that 13 people have been injured in shelling of the border area. Earlier in the day, the MoD released a video showing a column of Ukrainian vehicles traveling along a road in the Belgorod region before being struck by Russian drones and artillery.

Russian Defense Ministry to respond swiftly, severely to Kiev’s terror attacks — top brass

Russia’s Defense Ministry will continue to swiftly and severely react to Kiev’s actions such as a terror attack against Russian civilians in the Belgorod Region, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said on Wednesday.

He reiterated that on May 22, a unit of a Ukrainian nationalist formation infiltrated Russian territory in the vicinity of the Kozinka border checkpoint in the Belgorod Region. During a counterterror operation, the Ukrainian nationalist formations were blocked and wiped out.

"The remaining nationalists were pushed back to Ukraine where strikes on them continued until complete elimination. Over 70 Ukrainian terrorists have been wiped out as well as automotive and armored equipment. We will continue to respond to such actions by Ukrainian militants in a swift and extremely severe way," Shoigu said at the Defense Ministry’s board meeting.

As the Russian military agency reported on Tuesday, the incursion of the Ukrainian sabotage group was preceded by intensive artillery bombardments of the Kozinka checkpoint and several other civilian facilities in the Grayvoronsky District of the Belgorod Region. It added that, after failing in Artyomovsk, the Kiev regime switched to plotting terror attacks against civilians.

Russia to harshly suppress any Ukrainian terrorist attack, says diplomat

The Russian side will continue to harshly suppress any terrorist attacks, as it did in the case of Ukrainian saboteurs in the Belgorod Region, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

"Of course, no one can overshadow the victory in Artyomovsk. The May 22 saboteurs’ attack on the Belgorod Region was aimed at giving the Kiev regime’s NATO handlers a false impression of some high combat capability of the Ukrainian military and so on. It failed. All such terrorist attacks will continue to be harshly suppressed in the future," the diplomat told the briefing on Wednesday.

Zakharova pointed out that extremism and terrorism are now flourishing in Kiev. "We note.... increasingly aggressive statements by Western officials who shamelessly call for bombing peaceful Russian regions," she continued, "They are simply acting treacherously."

A Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group infiltrated the Belgorod Region’s Grayvoronsky District on Monday. According to the latest data, 13 civilians were wounded. An elderly woman died during the evacuation. The counter-terrorist operation regime, declared in Russia’s Belgorod Region on Monday because of the Ukrainian saboteurs, has been cancelled. On Tuesday, Russian Defense Ministry Spokesman Igor Konashenkov said that during the counter-terrorist operation Russian forces blocked and defeated Ukrainian nationalist units who infiltrated the region.
