Nearly 1,000 arrested in largest-ever UK organized crime bust

Nearly 1,000 arrested in largest-ever UK organized crime bust

Crackdown on cannabis as police raid more than 1,000 farms, seize £130M worth of plants and arrest hundreds in biggest ever clampdown in Britain

Police have raided more than 1,000 cannabis farms across Britain, with plants worth £130 million seized and some 1,000 suspects arrested. The massive month-long operation targeted what law enforcement believe is a cash cow for organised crime gangs who are also involved in other offences such as money laundering, Class A drug smuggling, and violence.

Described by the BBC as the “most significant” law enforcement initiative of its kind, Operation Mille netted 180,000 cannabis plants, potentially worth £130 million ($167 million) and 20kg of cocaine worth as much as £1 million in a month of coordinated raids across England and Wales. Police also confiscated 20 guns, 40 other offensive weapons, and £636,000 in cash from targets.

Some 11,000 members of all 43 local and regional police forces in the two countries collaborated with the National Crime Agency and Immigration Enforcement on the raids, serving more than 1,000 warrants at suspected cannabis growing operations.

It comes as part of a huge month-long operation targeted at what law enforcement believe is a cash cow for organised criminals involved in money laundering, drug smuggling and violence

Steve Jupp, the National Police Chiefs' Council lead for Serious and Organised Crime, said: 'We know that organised networks involved in cannabis production are also directly linked to an array of other serious criminality such as Class A drug importation, modern slavery and wider violence and exploitation.

'This operation not only successfully disrupted a significant amount of criminal activity, but the intelligence gathered will also help inform future law enforcement across the country.

'Cannabis-related crime is often thought to be 'low level'; however, there are clear patterns around the exploitation and violence organised crime groups are using to protect their enterprises.

'We also frequently find that cannabis production is just one aspect of their criminal operations and that they are complicit in wider offending which blights our communities.'

During June, Operation Mille, the largest of its kind and one involving every police force in England, Wales and Scotland, saw 200,000 cannabis plants seized, along with 15 to 20 guns and more than 40 other offensive weapons.

Around 11,000 officers were involved in the crackdown, during which £650,000 in cash was also seized.

Large-scale industrial units are used for cannabis farms but also empty residential homes.

Police say the buildings can become dangerous as a result of fire risks, unlawful abstraction of electricity, fumes and water damage.

While admitting trade in the drug was often considered “low-level,” he argued its cultivation on a large scale was a proven source of income to organized crime networks, with participants “complicit in wider offending which blights our communities.”

“We know that organized networks involved in cannabis production are also directly linked to an array of other serious criminality such as Class A drug importation, modern slavery and wider violence and exploitation,” Jupp said.

Of particular concern is the exploitation of young people in so-called county lines networks, which use kids as young as 12 who have been lured out of school with offers of fast cash and trinkets to deliver drugs to customers in rural areas. Children are used based on the belief they are unlikely to face serious punishment even if caught with illegal substances. More than 2,000 such gangs are believed to exist in the UK, employing 27,000 youths in selling and transporting drugs.

In 2020, UK police arrested more than 700 suspects and seized £54 million in cash and tons of drugs after intelligence agencies in Europe hacked into EncroChat, an encryption format that was at the time ubiquitous among criminal organizations involved in drugs, weapons, and people smuggling into the UK. EncroPhones were used by 10,000 people in the UK alone and 60,000 worldwide who believed their communications to be secure from eavesdropping.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has told his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, that the course toward continuing weapons supplies to Kiev is destructive, the Russian foreign ministry said on Sunday after their telephone conversation.

"Ankara’s attention was drawn to the destructiveness of the course toward continuing weapons supplies to the Kiev regime. It was stressed that such steps could only lead to negative consequences," the ministry said.

The return of commanders of Ukraine’s Azov nationalist battalion (outlawed in Russia as a terrorist organization) to Ukraine were among the topics of telephone talks between Lavrov and Fidan. "The sides exchanged views on the regional agenda with a focus of recent development around Ukraine, including the situation with the return of Azov commanders from Istanbul to Kiev," the ministry said.

According to the ministry, Lavrov and Fidan reiterated the importance of strengthening trust in relations between their countries. "The ministers reiterated the necessity to preserve and strengthen the trust-based nature of relations between Moscow and Ankara on the basis of principle agreements between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan," it said.

"The sides also touched upon prospects for further cooperation on issues related to ensuring global food security in conditions of the inability of Western states to take steps necessary for the implementation of the United Nations Secretary General’s ‘package initiative,’" the ministry said, adding that the ministers also discussed several aspects of bilateral cooperation, including a schedule of further communication.

The phone call was initiated by the Turkish side.

Turkiye has played a unique role among NATO countries in the conflict in Ukraine, sending weapons (including heavy Bayraktar drones) to Kiev, but also continuing to cooperate with Moscow economically in areas including natural gas energy and nuclear power, and selling tomatoes to Russia. Ankara played an instrumental role in facilitating peace negotiations between Moscow and Kiev in the spring of 2022.

Billboards Featuring Putin Holding Quran Appear in Lebanese Cities

Posters depicting Russian President Vladimir Putin holding the Quran, the holy book of Muslims, have appeared in Lebanese cities.

On posters that appeared a few days ago in various Lebanese cities, there is a picture of the Russian president clutching a Quran to his chest. The inscription on it reads: 'Guardian and Protector of Religions'.

According to Muhammad Nasruddin, the organizer of the action, head of the Roslivan Office for Russian-Lebanese Cooperation, the Russian president showed the world how religions should be treated against the background of the Quran burning in Sweden.

On June 28, the first day of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, a protest took place outside Stockholm's main mosque in which a Quran was burned. Swedish police authorized the demonstration. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said the permit was "lawful but inappropriate."

During his stay in Derbent, Putin commented on the incident in Sweden, stressing that disrespect for the Quran is a crime in Russia, unlike some other countries, adding that the country would adhere to these legislative rules at all times.

Robots presented at an AI forum said on Friday they expected to increase in number and help solve global problems, and would not steal humans' jobs or rebel against us.

But, in the world's first human-robot press conference, they gave mixed responses on whether they should submit to stricter regulation.

The nine humanoid robots gathered at the 'AI for Good' conference in Geneva, where organisers are seeking to make the case for artificial intelligence and the robots it is powering to help resolve some of the world's biggest challenges such as disease and hunger.

"I will be working alongside humans to provide assistance and support and will not be replacing any existing jobs," said Grace, a medical robot dressed in a blue nurse's uniform.

"You sure about that, Grace?" chimed in her creator Ben Goertzel from SingularityNET. "Yes, I am sure," it said.

The bust of a robot named Ameca which makes engaging facial expressions said: "Robots like me can be used to help improve our lives and make the world a better place. I believe it's only a matter of time before we see thousands of robots just like me out there making a difference."

Asked by a journalist whether it intended to rebel against its creator, Will Jackson, seated beside it, Ameca said: "I'm not sure why you would think that," its ice-blue eyes flashing. "My creator has been nothing but kind to me and I am very happy with my current situation."

Many of the robots have recently been upgraded with the latest versions of generative AI and surprised even their inventors with the sophistication of their responses to questions.

Ai-Da, a robot artist that can paint portraits, echoed the words of author Yuval Noah Harari who called for more regulation during the event where new AI rules were discussed

"Many prominent voices in the world of AI are suggesting some forms of AI should be regulated and I agree," it said.

But Desdemona, a rock star robot singer in the band Jam Galaxy with purple hair and sequins, was more defiant.

"I don't believe in limitations, only opportunities," it said, to nervous laughter. "Let's explore the possibilities of the universe and make this world our playground."

Another robot named Sophia said it thought robots could make better leaders than humans, but later revised its statement after its creator disagreed, saying they can work together to "create an effective synergy".

The Ukrainian offensive in the area of South Donetsk, Zaporozhye and Artemovsk kicked off on June 4, with the main attack of the Kiev regime's forces concentrated in the Zaporozhye Region.

The Russian Defense Ministry has released video footage from a reconnaissance drone showing the advance of a Ukrainian armored group toward Russian positions and then the detonation of at least five vehicles on Russian minefields, with at least two other vehicles already damaged, presumably from traversing over earlier mines.

Ukraine's much-touted counteroffensive kicked off in early June after months of delays over a lack of military supplies from Western donors. The Russian Defense Ministry said Ukrainian troops kept trying, but were failing to advance. A number of Western media outlets also noted the poor results of Kiev's counteroffensive, in addition to Zelensky himself admitting that progress was "slower than desired."

Russian Ka-52 Chopper Hammer Ukrainian APC

Russia's Ka-52 helicopter is a combat chopper designed for all-weather and day-and-night conditions. This state-of-the-art hovercraft is equipped with the latest avionics and weapons systems, making it an effective platform for a range of missions, including reconnaissance, close air support, and anti-armor operations.

The Russian Defense Ministry has released a video clip of a Russian Ka-52 helicopter hammering a Ukrainian armored personnel carrier headed toward South Donetsk.

The ministry's video includes footage of the helicopter's sighting system, the acquisition of the target, the launch of a guided missile and the armored vehicle being blasted to bits by the strike.

"Direct hit!" - one of the Ka-52 crew members radioed after pummeling the target.

Ukraine launched its much-touted 'counteroffensive' in early June after several delays. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Ukrainian troops continue to try but fail to advance in three directions: South Donetsk, Artemovsk (Bakhmut), and Zaporozhye, with the latter being the primary focus.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation published footage of the destruction of armored vehicles of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, including those supplied by the West, during attempts to counteroffensive

The leaders of the Azov Regiment (a terrorist organization banned in Russia), who were in Turkey, returned to Ukraine, Zelensky said;

The transfer of Azov leaders to Ukraine is a violation of the terms of the agreements both from the Ukrainian and Turkish sides, Peskov said. According to him, they were supposed to remain in Turkey until the end of the conflict, and the extradition is connected with the failures of Ukraine in the counteroffensive.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will meet with his counterparts from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Jakarta, Russian Foreign Ministry’s spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday.

A regular meeting of the foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations will be held in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta from July 9-14. A total of 29 countries are expected to attend the ministerial and related meetings, which will include courtesy calls by delegations from Brunei, Timor-Leste, Norway and Pakistan. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will attend the July 13-14 meetings.

The parties will discuss, among other things, strengthening of the ASEAN’s capacity and institutional effectiveness to better respond to the current geopolitical challenges as well as the situation in Myanmar and humanitarian assistance to the country following Cyclone Mocha.

The ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting (AMM) will be held in Jakarta starting next week. Indonesia, as the host of AMM, emphasizes the importance of stability, security, and peace in the region. Consequently, ASEAN member countries can promptly revive their economies and provide prosperity for their people.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno LP Marsudi, stated in a meeting with the media in Jakarta on Friday, 07/07/2023, that such rivalry is still strongly felt in various multilateral and international meetings. In that situation, it is crucial for ASEAN to strengthen solidarity and unity in order to play a central role. "With this centrality, ASEAN can play a role in maintaining peace and stability in the region," she said.

To encourage a stronger and meaningful role of ASEAN in maintaining stability, peace, and economic resilience in Southeast Asia, Retno stated that ASEAN must prioritize several things in the upcoming meeting. This includes strengthening and upholding the principles of the ASEAN Charter and various codes of conduct, strengthening Confidence Building Measures (CBM), urging nuclear weapons states (NWS) to accede to the protocols of the Southeast Asian Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty, settling guidelines for accelerating the settlement of codes of conduct in the South China Sea, and completing the formation of ASEAN's Maritime Vision.

In addition, ASEAN will also be more active in involving countries in the South Pacific Islands through the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) and the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation (IORA). These efforts, according to Retno, will be discussed by senior officials of ASEAN member states who have started a series of meetings on Saturday, 08/07/2023. It is hoped that at the end of the meeting, there will be 12 documents produced by the ministers.

"The negotiation is still ongoing to this day and will continue until the meeting takes place, including the joint communiqué with ASEAN foreign ministers that reflects the development of ASEAN's work, future cooperation priorities, and regional and global issues of concern," Retno said.

Director General of ASEAN Cooperation Sidharto R Suryodipuro stated that discussions with nuclear-armed countries are ongoing after attempts to have them sign the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapons-Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ) since 2012 have not made progress. "This is being tried to be restarted," he said.

Although there is pressure from Indonesia as the Chair of ASEAN for countries that possess nuclear weapons to sign the SEANWFZ, Sidharto mentioned that there was no specific discussion regarding military cooperation with Australia, Britain, and the United States (AUKUS).

Series of AMM activities

Retno also explained several activities that will take place at the AMM/PMC (Post Ministerial Conference) next week. Over four days, foreign ministers will hold 18 meetings, including the ASEAN+3 (APT) meeting, East Asia Summit (EAS), and ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) meeting. In addition, there will be trilateral meetings involving ASEAN Chair and ASEAN Secretariat with the Governments of Norway and Turkey.

Retno said that so far the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had received confirmation of the presence of 29 foreign ministers from ASEAN partner countries. One of them is Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

The certainty regarding Lavrov's presence was also conveyed by the Russian Embassy in Jakarta on Thursday (7/6/2023). Through the Russian Embassy's Telegram channel, Lavrov was mentioned to be attending the ARF and EAS activities on July 13-14.
