Historical revisionists are now trying to argue that actual Nazi soldiers were just anti-Soviet resisters.

We knew that it was coming. It was only a matter of time. And now attempts to whitewash the actions of actual Nazis from WWII have begun – all because a bunch of ignoramuses in the Canadian parliament cheered one alongside Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, and it all just makes Ukraine and its Western supporters look bad.

It also makes Western lawmakers look like they have no clue when it comes to Nazism in Ukraine – either past or present. So instead of asking questions about their judgment, it’s time to ask whether you’ve just misunderstood Nazis.

The newly-resigned Canadian House Speaker introduced Ukrainian one-time Waffen-SS soldier Yaroslav Hunka as a Ukrainian (and naturalized Canadian) who fought Russians back in the day, yet apparently no one bothered to do the math. The Soviet Union was allied with the West against Nazi Germany. Nazi Germany was who fought against the Russians. Okay, it wasn’t the only one – there were others, like the Polish Home Army, which fought against both the Soviets and the Germans. So maybe Hunka was part of that? That’s the theoretical explanation the German Foreign Office offered when it emerged that the German ambassador to Canada was also present at the standing ovation in parliament. Yeah, that must have been it. A Ukrainian going to war to protect Ukraine from the Soviet Union by joining the Polish Home Army. Sounds plausible.

Oh, no, wait, he was actually in the Waffen SS, namely the First Galician Division – a unit that mostly consisted of Ukrainians and killed Poles and Jews. He joined it voluntarily and later described his decision in an essay published by an American online magazine. And now Poland wants him extradited for alleged war crimes.

Leaving aside convoluted historical revisionism, those who don’t acknowledge the nuance in this Nazi’s service are just feeding Russian propaganda, according to some Western commentators. “This history is complicated,” one wrote recently in POLITICO. “Because fighting against the USSR at the time didn’t necessarily make you a Nazi, just someone who had an excruciating choice over which of these two terror regimes to resist.”

It's pretty safe to say that someone who volunteered for the combat branch of the Nazi Party's paramilitary Schutzstaffel (SS) organization is an actual Nazi – unlike Canadian Freedom Convoy truckers and their supporters who were treated like Nazis by this same Canadian government, which went as far as to even block some of their bank accounts. Have Hunka and the actual Nazis who were welcomed to Canada in the wake of the war ever had their bank accounts blocked? Or is that just for people who honk too loudly in protest? Who’s more embarrassing to Canada: naturalized Nazis, truckers, or the parliament?

So apparently, we’re supposed to now believe that Waffen SS soldiers aren’t really Nazis, just anti-Soviet resistors. Are we supposed to also look deep into the heart and intentions of each individual who served voluntarily in the Nazi uniform to determine how they really felt about it? Who knows – perhaps Hunka didn’t really mean it when pledging loyalty to the Führer. Maybe he’s like an employee at Home Depot who can’t be held responsible for store policies – even though, in the case of Nazis, that didn’t fly either, as the Nuremberg Trials proved.

It takes some Olympic-grade mental gymnastics to suggest that neither Zelensky, who’s Ukrainian himself, nor Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, who holds degrees in Russian and Slavic studies from Oxford and Harvard and whose grandfather edited a Ukrainian Nazi newspaper during WWII, couldn’t have known that this guy just might be a Nazi… but they whooped it up for him anyway. But now, their actions are on the verge of being reframed.

It's all such a backside-covering move to compensate for a total lack of due diligence – the same kind that was demonstrated when it emerged that Canada had knowingly trained and equipped Azov Battalion neo-Nazis for Ukraine’s current conflict with Russia while seemingly being bothered far more by the notion that the press risked finding out about it than by the idea of training guys with Nazi tattoos.

To accept historic reality, instead of trying hard to weasel Justin Trudeau and the Canadian establishment out of this embarrassment, is to let “Russian propaganda” win. Seriously. That’s the argument. “Canada’s enemies have thus latched on to these simple narratives, alongside concerned citizens in Canada itself, with the misstep over Hunka being used by Russia and its backers to attack Ukraine, Canada and each country’s association with the other,” wrote the POLITICO commentator. Know who else has “latched on” to the “I can’t believe they could be that dumb” narrative around this Canadian Nazipalooza? Honest people and patriots who are, in fact, less interested in peddling narratives that serve a handful of establishment elites and more interested in defending historical realities that serve all of humanity rather than reframing or perverting them to suit an ideological cause – anti-Russian or otherwise.

Trudeau said in the same breath as his apology for the Hunka incident that “it's going to be really important that all of us push back against Russian propaganda, Russian disinformation, and continue our steadfast and unequivocal support for Ukraine.” It seems that some have already jumped on the opportunity to redefine defense of well-established historical record as “Russian propaganda” and to impose the whims of Western leaders as the new dystopian reality.

Video - 17 Ukrainian soldiers surrender to Russian fighters

Footage obtained by RT shows the moment when 17 Ukrainian soldiers surrendered to Russian forces in Donetsk. They decided to lay down their arms after they were ordered to hold their positions without any ammunition, RIA Novosti has reported.

The video, part of which was apparently filmed by a drone, shows the Ukrainian troops walking in single file toward Russian military personnel with their hands up. After being searched, they discarded their bulletproof vests and boarded a truck. The footage also shows several injured Ukrainian soldiers lying on the ground

According to RIA Novosti, citing Russian security sources, the surrender took place in the vicinity of Donetsk. The media outlet claimed that the Ukrainians had run out of ammunition and had sustained several injuries. Despite this fact, they were reportedly ordered to remain in place, with their commanders refusing to evacuate them.

The media outlet reported that another group of Ukrainian soldiers surrendered in Donetsk late last month, handing over an ammunition crate to Russian troops.

Speaking at a plenary session of the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that “since June 4 alone, Ukrainian units have already lost over 90,000 people,” noting that this figure included both deaths and incapacitations.

Kiev has also lost 557 tanks and almost 1,900 armored vehicles over the same period, Putin added.

Ukraine launched its counteroffensive at the start of the summer with a series of largely unsuccessful advances along the frontline between Kherson and Donetsk. Kiev’s forces have since managed to make some modest gains but no major breakthrough is in sight.

Several senior Western officials have publicly acknowledged that the counteroffensive has not proceeded as they had hoped, with media reports claiming that the operation has been viewed as a failure in the US and Europe

LIVE UPDATES - Israel Launches Operation 'Iron Swords' Against Hamas

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Saturday declared a "state of alert" after militants from the Gaza Strip infiltrated the border areas amid a rocket barrage from the enclave.

"The Israel Defense Forces declare a state of alert," the IDF said in a statement. Civilians in the southern and central regions of the country should remain near shelters, and those in the areas near the Gaza Strip inside shelters, according to the statement.

Fighters have infiltrated Israel from the Gaza Strip, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) added.

"Fighters have infiltrated Israel from Gaza. Residents in the area have been asked to stay in their homes," the IDF said on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced the large-scale call-up of reservists amid the threat to the national security. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu headed to the headquarters of the Defense Ministry to hold an emergency meeting with the military command

Air Raid Alert and Missile Strikes

Air raid warning sirens are sounding in Tel Aviv again, the signal could be heard in the northern part of the city, a Sputnik correspondent reported. Sirens were also heard in the central part of the country, air defenses are also working, the Israeli army said.

Earlier, militants fired dozens of rockets from the Gaza Strip on Israel. Medics confirmed the death of an elderly woman in southern Israel as a result of a rocket strike.

Dozens of Israeli jets strike Gaza – IDF

Dozens of Israeli jets have struck Hamas targets in Gaza, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have said. The airstrikes were launched in response to a surprise attack unleashed by the Palestinian armed group against Israel on Saturday morning.

IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said “Hamas terrorists” had infiltrated the Israeli territory from land, sea and air.

More than 2,200 rockets have been fired from Gaza, according to the spokesman. Hamas claimed that it used more than 5,000 projectiles in just the first 20 minutes of its attack.

Rocket sirens have been heard in many places across Israel, including Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Beersheba, and Ashkelon.

There were at least seven instances of fighting between IDF troops and Hamas militants, Hagari said.

According to the Times of Israel newspaper, gun battles have been underway in and around the towns of Kfar Aza, Sderot, Sufa, Nahal Oz, Magen, Be’eri, and the IDF’s Re’im military base.

In an earlier statement, the IDF said it had declared “a state of readiness for war” due to the attack. “Hamas terror organization will pay a very heavy price,” it warned.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said he had approved a call-up of reservists in response to the actions by Hamas.

At least six people are believed to have been killed in Israel on Saturday. Four died in missile strikes in the town of Kuseife and one in the Gderot area.

The head of Sha'ar HaNegev town Ofir Liebstein was also shot dead in a gunfight with Hamas militants. “Ofir was killed when he went to defend a town during the terrorist attack,” the local administration said.

Information coming from medical institutions across Israel suggests that more than 200 people were wounded, including many in serious condition.

Some videos uploaded online during the day purportedly show a number of IDF troops being killed and captured by Hamas fighters. There’s also social media footage and photos of what appears to be a burning Israeli tank and Palestinians celebrating the seizure of a US-made Humvee military vehicle from the IDF. The videos have yet to be verified.

Widespread condemnation amid Hamas attacks on Israel

Egypt has warned of “grave consequences” from an escalation in tensions between Israel and the Palestinians amid widespread condemnation of Hamas’ rocket attacks on Israel.

Egypt, through a statement from the foreign ministry carried by the state news agency on Saturday, called for “exercising maximum restraint and avoiding exposing civilians to further danger”.

Russia has also urged for ‘restraint’ after the attacks on Israel.

“We are now in contact with everyone. With the Israelis, Palestinians, Arabs,” Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told Russian private news agency Interfax, adding: “Of course, we always call for restraint.”

“The UK unequivocally condemns the horrific attacks by Hamas on Israeli civilians. The UK will always support Israel’s right to defend itself,” Britain’s Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said in a post on social media.

Italy meanwhile said it backed “Israel’s right to defend itself” against the “brutal attack” underway after hundreds of rockets were fired on its territory from Gaza. The Italian government said it “condemns in the strongest terms the terror and the violence underway against innocent civilians”, adding: “We back the right of Israel to defend itself”.

German top envoy Annalena Baerbock said that Germany “firmly condemns the terrorist attacks from Gaza against Israel” and it “has our full solidarity” and “the right, guaranteed by international law, to defend itself against terrorism.”

The French foreign ministry also condemned “in the strongest possible terms the ongoing terrorist attacks against Israel and its population” after the firing of hundreds of rockets into Israel from the Gaza Strip.

France “expresses its full solidarity with Israel and the victims of these attacks. It reaffirms its absolute rejection of terrorism and its commitment to Israel’s security”, the ministry added.

Roberta Metsola, the president of the European Parliament meanwhile said: We condemn the attacks launched by Hamas on Israel.”

Stephanie Hallett, the US Chargé d’Affaires to Israel said on social media: “I condemn the indiscriminate rocket fire by Hamas terrorists against Israeli civilians. I am in contact with Israeli officials, and fully support Israel’s right to defend itself from such terrorist acts.

“Sickened by the images coming out of southern Israel of dead and wounded civilians at the hands of terrorists from Gaza. The United States stands with Israel.”

Ukraine’s foreign ministry also condemned what it described as “ongoing terrorist attacks” on Israel.

“Ukraine strongly condemns the ongoing terrorist attacks against Israel, including rocket attacks against the civilian population in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv,” the ministry said on the social media platform X.

From September 29 to October 6, the Russian armed forces have repelled 34 attacks by Ukrainian troops in the Donetsk direction, 11 attacks in the South Donetsk direction, four attacks in the Kupyansk direction, and two in the Zaporozhye direction, the ministry said.

"Over the past week, in this (Donetsk) direction, units of the Southern group repelled 34 attacks by the Ukrainian armed forces. As a result of the fighting, the enemy lost more than 1,745 Ukrainian military personnel killed and wounded, 18 tanks and other armored combat vehicles, 27 vehicles, 13 field artillery guns, and the Grad MLRS combat vehicle," the ministry said in a statement.

Ukraine has also lost more than 755 military in the South Donetsk direction, over 430 military in the Krasny Liman direction, more than 405 military in the Kupyansk direction, over 320 military in the Zaporozhye direction, and up to 235 military in the Kherson direction over the past week, the statement read.

Watch Russian Special Forces Wipe Out Ukrainian Armored Vehicles

Russia’s Osman special forces wreak havoc on Ukrainian troops day and night, using a wide range of homegrown military equipment, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The Russian Defense Ministry has published footage of its Osman special forces units launching drone strikes on Ukrainian positions non-stop, eliminating NATO-supplied armored vehicles in the Zaporozhye direction.

The Osman fighters have successfully wiped out Leopards and Bradleys, sent to Kiev by the West, using anti-tank guided missiles and UAVs, reducing Ukraine's offensive capabilities.

Watch Russian Artillery Hit Positions of Ukrainian Assault Brigade

The latest Ukrainian counteroffensive began in June, mostly in the Donetsk and Zaporozhye regions. Three months later, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the Ukrainian counteroffensive had failed. Russia's Defense Ministry has released footage showing Southern Military District artillery crews hitting positions of the Ukrainian 10th Mountain Assault Brigade near Spornoye in the Donetsk region.

President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that Ukraine has lost over 90,000 fighters since the start of its counteroffensive on June 4. At the same time, Kiev lost a substancial amount of military equipment, sent to Ukraine by Western countries.

Russian Air Defense Downed, Suppressed 320 Ukrainian Drones in Past Week

Russian air defense systems have destroyed and suppressed as many as 320 Ukrainian drones using electronic warfare means from September 29 to October 6, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported on Friday.

"(A total of) 320 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) were destroyed and suppressed by electronic warfare systems," the ministry said in a statement.

The Russian armed forces have also launched 14 strikes at the Ukrainian military infrastructure using long-range precision weapons and UAVs over the given period, the ministry added.

The naval aviation of Russia's Black Sea Fleet destroyed two watercraft and 13 Ukrainian saboteurs in the Black Sea during an attempt to land on the coast of Crimea, the ministry stated.

"On October 4, 2023, naval aviation of the Black Sea Fleet destroyed two watercraft and 13 saboteurs of the Ukrainian armed forces in the Black Sea during an attempt to land troops on the coast of Crimea,” the ministry said.

Special operation, October 6. Main:

  • Over the week, the Armed Forces of Ukraine lost about 3,890 soldiers killed and wounded, the Ministry of Defense reported in its weekly report.

  • Russian troops carried out 14 group attacks on Ukrainian military infrastructure over the course of a week, destroying, among other things, the Punisher and Fury UAV assembly workshop, HIMARS, Storm Shadow and Scalp storage warehouses.

  • Shoigu visited the Chkalov aircraft plant in Novosibirsk, where he checked the progress of the state defense order and set the task of increasing the pace of production and repair of the Su-34 aircraft.

  • Russian artillerymen hit a car with high-ranking officers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Kherson.

  • Aviation of the Russian group of troops "West" carried out 19 strikes on enemy positions in the Kupyansk direction, Kyiv lost up to a company of manpower and two tanks.

  • A Ka-29 helicopter of the Black Sea Fleet destroyed a naval drone of the Ukrainian Armed Forces en route to Crimea.

  • Stockholm named the condition for the possible transfer of JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine - first, Sweden must join NATO.

Pemenang Hadiah Nobel Perdamaian 2023 adalah Narges Mohammadi, aktivis Iran

A photo provided by the Narges Mohammadi Foundation on Oct. 2, 2023, shows Iranian rights campaigner Narges Mohammadi, who has won the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize. (AFP/Getty Images)

The prize will cast an international spotlight on the fight for women’s rights in the Middle Eastern nation, where women have taken to the streets in protest under the banner “Woman, Life, Freedom,” following the death in custody of a young woman in September 2022.

“Her brave struggle has come with tremendous personal costs,” Reiss-Andersen said. “Altogether, the regime has arrested her 13 times, convicted her five times, and sentenced her to a total of 31 years in prison and 154 lashes. Ms. Mohammadi is still in prison.”

“In awarding her this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes to honor her courageous fight for human rights, freedom and democracy in Iran,” Reiss-Andersen said, describing Mohammadi as a “freedom fighter.”

Iran has not yet officially responded to the award, but after earlier criticism by European and American officials over the treatment of women in the country, Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani lashed out Thursday on social media against “interventionist & biased remarks & expressing insincere concern over Iranian women & girls.”

In the 1990s, Mohammadi studied physics before working as an engineer and becoming an advocate for equality and women’s rights, and campaigning to abolish the death penalty. In 2011, she was arrested for the first time for her efforts to assist incarcerated activists and their families.

Accused of “spreading propaganda,” the 51-year-old is now serving 10 years in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison. There, she works to oppose the conditions inflicted on her and fellow female inmates, specifically the use of torture and solitary confinement.

Last year, Mohammadi published the book “White Torture” on Iran’s use of solitary confinement and sensory deprivation against her and fellow prisoners.

“The aim of white torture is to permanently break the connection between a person’s body and mind to force the individual to recant their ethics and actions,” she wrote.

Mohammadi wrote the book’s preface during a brief furlough from prison for medical reasons last year. She closed the section with a pledge, “They will put me behind bars again, but I will not stop campaigning until human rights and justice prevail in my country.”

And this year, on the anniversary of the death of Mahsa Amini, the young woman arrested for a dress code violation who died in the custody of Iran’s morality police last year, Mohammadi staged a protest inside Evin prison. She and three other women burned their headscarves, according to a post on her social media page.

Mohammadi’s determination to continue working despite her imprisonment “carries a powerful message,” said a fellow Iranian activist and former colleague, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of security concerns.

“Narges Mohammadi is one of the very few who not only has stayed in Iran, but remains active, whether she is out or imprisoned,” she said. Her example is an inspiration within the activist community and among young people who continue to face attempts by the country’s leadership to quash dissent, the activist added.

Iran is carrying out waves of arrests targeting activists, journalists and intellectuals in an attempt to stamp out dissent and tighten social restrictions. After protests erupted following Amini’s death last year, Iranian authorities arrested some 20,000 people.

Mohammadi has been previously honored by Reporters Without Borders, the PEN America Literary Gala and the United Nations’ World Press Freedom Prize for her work defending human rights and her commitment to journalism under threat.

Mohammadi and two other Iranian journalists recognized by the United Nations “paid a hefty price for their commitment to report and convey the truth,” said Zainab Salbi, chair of the International Jury of media professionals who chose the press freedom prize winners.

“We are committed to honoring them and ensuring their voices will continue to echo worldwide until they are safe and free,” Salbi said.

Past detained people to receive the prize include German pacifist Carl von Ossietzky in 1935, Burmese democracy campaigner Aung San Suu Kyi in 1991, Chinese rights activist Liu Xiaobo in 2010, and last year’s winner, Ales Bialiatski.

Arguably the most famous of the prizes set out by Alfred Nobel in his 1895 will, the Peace Prize includes a gold medal and an award of over $1 million for an individual or organization most contributing to “fraternity between nations,” reducing standing armies or holding peace conferences. The definition has since been expanded to include humanitarian work and the struggle for human rights.

While it was once politicians and leaders winning the prestigious prize, in recent years it has increasingly gone to organizations and individuals promoting human rights and humanitarian work. Amid war in Europe, last year’s prize went to human rights activists and organizations in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine, while in 2021, it was awarded to Russian and Philippine journalists for promoting freedom of expression.

The last political leader to receive the prize, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in 2019 for peace efforts with neighboring Eritrea, came under criticism after a brutal civil war erupted in the north of the African country.

Alone among the prizes, which are handed out by Scandinavian institutions, the Peace Prize is awarded by a five-member Norwegian committee chosen by the Norwegian parliament, in accordance with Nobel’s wishes.

The possible political motives of the award are always closely scrutinized to see what kind of message the committee is sending the world. There were 351 candidates for the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize — the second-highest number of candidates ever, according to the organization.

The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded 103 times between 1901 and 2022. Other famous Peace Prize winners include girls’ education advocate Malala Yousafzai, civil rights campaigner Martin Luther King Jr. and Catholic humanitarian Mother Teresa, among others.

Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman, whose research laid the groundwork for messenger RNA vaccines, were awarded the Nobel prize in medicine on Oct. 2. (Video: Reuters) Earlier this week, the Nobel Prize in medicine was awarded to two scientists whose research laid the groundwork for messenger RNA vaccines that transformed the threat of the coronavirus pandemic.
