Iran blamed Israel and the United States on Wednesday for twin bomb blasts that killed at least 95 people in the country’s south, ripping through a crowd commemorating Revolutionary Guards general Qasem Soleimani four years after his death in a US strike.

The two explosions — labelled a “terrorist attack” by state media and regional authorities — came amid high Middle East tensions over the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza and the killing of a Hamas senior leader in Lebanon on Tuesday.

The unclaimed attacks, which sparked fears of a widening conflict in the region, rattled global markets, where oil prices jumped more than three percent and sparked global condemnation.

“Washington says USA and Israel had no role in terrorist attack in Kerman, Iran. Really? A fox smells its own lair first,” the Iranian president’s political deputy, Mohammad Jamshidi wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

“Make no mistake. The responsibility for this crime lies with the US and Zionist regimes (Israel) and terrorism is just a tool,” he added.

The United States had earlier rejected any suggestions that it or ally Israel were involved while Israel declined to comment. “The United States was not involved in any way... We have no reason to believe that Israel was involved in this explosion,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said.

Asked about the blasts, Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari said: “We are focused on the combat with Hamas.” Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei blamed “evil and criminal enemies” of the country for the attack and vowed a “harsh response.”

President Ebrahim Raisi, who scrapped a visit to Turkiye on Thursday, condemned the “heinous” crime as the Islamic Republic of Iran declared Thursday a national day of mourning.

The blasts, about 15 minutes apart, struck near the Martyrs Cemetery at the Saheb Al-Zaman Mosque in Kerman, Soleimani’s southern hometown, as supporters gathered to mark his killing in a 2020 US drone strike in Baghdad.

Iran’s official IRNA news agency initially reported 103 people were killed while state television said 211 were wounded, some in critical condition.

Health minister Bahram Eynollahi later revised the toll, saying: “The exact number of the people killed in the terrorist incident is 95.”

He said the reason for the earlier figure of 103 was that some names “were wrongly registered twice.”

Three paramedics who rushed to the scene after the first explosion were among those killed, said Iran’s Red Crescent. IRNA said the first explosion took place around 700 meters (yards) from Soleimani’s grave while the other was around one kilometer away.

Tasnim news agency, quoting what it called informed sources, said that “two bags carrying bombs went off” and “the perpetrators... apparently detonated the bombs by remote control.”

Online footage showed panicked crowds scrambling to flee as security personnel cordoned off the area.

State television showed bloodied victims lying on the ground and ambulances and rescue personnel racing to help them.

“We were walking toward the cemetery when a car suddenly stopped behind us and a waste bin containing a bomb exploded,” an eyewitness was quoted as saying by the ISNA news agency.

“We only heard the explosion and saw people falling.”

By nightfall, crowds returned to the Martyrs Cemetery in Kerman chanting: “Death to Israel” and “Death to America.” In Tehran, thousands gathered at the Grand Mosalla Mosque to pay tribute to Soleimani.

“We condemn today’s bitter terrorist incident... I hope the perpetrators of the crime will be identified and punished for their actions,” Soleimani’s daughter, Zeinab, said.

Soleimani headed the Quds Force, the foreign operations arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, overseeing military operations across the Middle East.

The United Nations, European Union, and several countries including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Germany and Iraq denounced the blasts.

UN chief Antonio Guterres “strongly condemns” the blasts, his office said, and the EU said: “This act of terror has exacted a shocking toll of civilian deaths and injuries.”

The EU’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, said that he spoke to Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian to “convey condolences” and “condemned this terrorist attack in the strongest terms and expressed solidarity with the Iranian people.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin wrote to Raisi and Khamenei that “the killing of peaceful people visiting the cemetery is shocking in its cruelty and cynicism.” Iran ally Hamas denounced the “criminal attack” while the Saudi foreign ministry in Riyadh voiced “solidarity with Iran in this painful event.”

The blasts came a day after Hamas number two Saleh Al-Aruri — an Iran ally — was killed in a strike, which Lebanese officials blamed on Israel, on a southern Beirut suburb that is a stronghold of Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah.

Wednesday’s bomb blasts were Iran’s deadliest since a 1978 arson Cinema Rex attack in the southwestern city of Abadan, which killed at least 377 people, according to AFP archives.

Iran has long fought a shadow war of killings and sabotage with arch-enemy Israel while also battling various jihadist and other militant groups. In September, the Fars news agency reported that a key “operative” affiliated with the Daesh group, in charge of carrying out “terrorist operations” in Iran, had been arrested in Kerman.

In July, Iran’s intelligence ministry said it had disbanded a network “linked to Israel’s spy organization” that had been plotting “terrorist operations” across Iran, IRNA reported.

The alleged plots included “planning an explosion at the grave” of Soleimani, it said.

Soleimani, whom Khamenei years ago declared a “living martyr,” was widely regarded as a hero in Iran for his role in defeating IS in both Iraq and Syria.

Long seen as a deadly adversary by the United States and its allies, Soleimani was one of the most important powerbrokers across the region, setting Iran’s political and military agenda in Syria, Iraq and Yemen.

Saudi Foreign Ministry confirms the Kingdom’s rejection and condemnation of the terrorist bombings that targeted civilians in Iran.

The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad, in a phone call with the Iranian President, condemns the terrorist bombing in Kerman and declares his solidarity with Iran.

Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs: We condemn the “terrorist attack” that targeted the city of Kerman, southern Iran.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Sultanate of Oman: The Government of Oman has expressed its sincere condolences and sympathies to Iran and the families of the victims of the two bombings in ⁧Kerman⁩ and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured.

The Venezuelan government: We condemn in the strongest terms the terrorist attack that occurred in the city of Kerman in Iran.

Saudi Arabia on Wednesday condemned two explosions that killed nearly 100 people and wounded scores at a ceremony in Iran to commemorate commander Qassem Soleimani.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed the Kingdom’s rejection and condemnation of the terrorist bombings that targeted civilians in Iran,” a statement said.

The foreign ministry extended it condolences and sympathy to Iran, wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

Iranian state television reported a first and then a second blast after 15 minutes during a crowded fourth-anniversary event at the cemetery where Soleimani is buried in the southeastern city of Kerman. He was killed by a US drone in 2020.

Iranian Health Minister Bahram Eynollahi told state TV the death toll was at 95, down from 103, and said 211 others were injured.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday expressed his condolences over twin blasts that killed at least 103 people in Iran near the grave of the slain general Qassem Soleimani.

“The killing of peaceful people visiting the cemetery is shocking in its cruelty and cynicism,” Putin said in a letter to Iran’s president Ebrahim Raisi and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Two explosions killed nearly 100 people and wounded scores at a ceremony in Iran on Wednesday to commemorate commander Qassem Soleimani who was killed by a US drone in 2020, Iranian officials said, blaming unspecified “terrorists.”

Iranian state television reported a first and then a second blast after 15 minutes during a crowded fourth-anniversary event at the cemetery where Soleimani is buried in the southeastern city of Kerman.

No one claimed responsibility for the blasts.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi condemned the “heinous and inhumane crime,” and Iran’s top authority Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei vowed revenge for the bloody twin bombings.

“Cruel criminals ... must know that they will be strongly dealt with from now on and ... undoubtedly there will be a harsh response,” Khamenei said in a statement, according to state media.

Several countries, including Russia and Turkiye, condemned the attacks, and the UN Secretary-General called for those responsible to be held accountable.

Iranian Health Minister Bahram Eynollahi told state TV the death toll was at 95, down from 103, and said 211 others were injured, making it the deadliest attack in the history of the Islamic Republic, which has faced similar incidents in the past from various groups, including Islamic State.

Iran has in the past blamed Israel for attacks on individual people or places within its borders — claims which Israel has neither confirmed nor denied — but there was no indication of any involvement of a foreign state in the cemetery explosions.

An unnamed official told state news agency IRNA that “two explosive devices planted along the road leading to Kerman’s Martyrs’ Cemetery were detonated remotely by terrorists.”

VIDEOS SHOW DOZENS OF BLOODIED BODIES

Videos aired by Iranian state media showed dozens of bloodied bodies strewn around with some bystanders trying to help survivors and others hurrying to leave the blast area.

“I heard a very loud sound and then felt pain in my back ... then I could not feel my legs,” a wounded woman at a Kerman hospital told state television.

Iran’s Red Crescent rescuers tended to wounded people at the ceremony, where hundreds of Iranians had gathered to mark the anniversary of Soleimani’s killing. Some Iranian news agencies said the number of wounded was much higher.

“A terrible sound was heard there, despite all the security and safety measures. The matter is still under investigation,” Reza Fallah, head of the Kerman Red Crescent Society, told state television.

Later, the state news agency said the cemetery had been evacuated and closed until further notice. The government announced that Thursday would be a day of mourning.

While the authorities did not publicly assign blame, top commander of Iran’s Quds force Esmail Qaani said the attacks were carried out by “the agents of the Zionist regime (Israel) and the United States.”

Tehran often accuses its arch enemies, Israel and the United States, of backing anti-Iran militant groups.

State TV showed crowds gathered at the cemetery at night, chanting: “Death to Israel” and “Death to America.”

The United States was not involved in any way in the explosions in Iran on Wednesday and has no reason to believe Israel was, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told a regular news briefing.

EARLIER ATTACKS

In 2022, the Sunni Muslim militant group Islamic State claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on a Shiite shrine in Iran which killed 15 people.

Earlier attacks claimed by the group include deadly twin bombings in 2017 which targeted Iran’s parliament and the tomb of the Islamic Republic’s founder Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Baluchi militants and ethnic Arab separatists have also staged attacks in Iran.

The US assassination of Soleimani in a Jan. 3, 2020, drone attack at Baghdad airport and Tehran’s retaliation by attacking two Iraq military bases that house US troops brought the United States and Iran close to full-blown conflict.

As chief commander of the elite Quds force, the overseas arm of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Soleimani ran clandestine operations abroad and was a key figure in Iran’s longstanding campaign to drive US forces from the Middle East.

Tensions between Iran and Israel, along with its ally the United States, have reached a new high over Israel’s war on Iran-backed Hamas militants in Gaza in retaliation for their Oct. 7 rampage through southern Israel.

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi militia have attacked ships they say have links to Israel in the entrance to the Red Sea, one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes. US forces have come under attack from Iran-backed militants in Iraq and Syria over Washington’s backing of Israel and have carried out their own retaliatory airstrikes.

On Dec. 25 an Israeli airstrike killed a senior commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards in Syria.

Iran's Alborz warship has reportedly entered the Red Sea, emerging at a time of heightened tensions in the key shipping route amid ongoing attacks on vessels in response to the Israel-Hamas war.

The agency did not give specific reasons for its deployment, but noted that Iranian military vessels had operated in the area since 2009.

“The Alborz destroyer entered the Red Sea... by passing through the Bab Al-Mandeb,” waterway at the southern tip of the Red Sea, connecting with the Gulf of Aden in the Indian Ocean, the agency said.

It added that Iran’s naval fleet has been operating in the area “to secure shipping lanes, repel pirates, among other purposes since 2009.”

The United States in early December set up a multinational naval task force for the Red Sea following a flurry of missile and drone attacks by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi militia on merchant vessels which led shipping companies to suspend passages through the area.

The Houthis say the attacks were in solidarity with Palestinians in the war-ravaged Gaza Strip, where Israel is battling Hamas militants.

According to the International Chamber of Shipping, 12 percent of global trade passes through the Red Sea, which provides a shortcut past Africa via the Suez Canal. On Sunday, US Navy helicopters fired on Houthis attempting to board a cargo ship off Yemen, with the rebels reporting 10 fighters dead or missing.

Regional tensions have spiked since the start of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7.

On Monday, Britain’s Defense Secretary Grant Shapps said Britain was “willing to take direct action” against the Houthis “to deter threats to freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.”

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron had spoken on Sunday with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian about the Red Sea tensions.

“I made clear that Iran shares responsibility for preventing these attacks,” he said on social media, noting Tehran’s “long-standing support” for the Houthis.

Abdollahian criticized the “double-standards” of some Western countries, according to a statement from Iran’s foreign ministry, saying the “Israeli regime cannot be allowed... to set the region on fire” with the Gaza war.

The United States previously accused Iran of being “deeply involved” in the Houthi attacks.

Iran has denied such accusations saying the Houthis were acting on their own. In 2021, the Alborz repulsed a pirate attack against two oil tankers in the Gulf of Aden

Polish chess grandmaster Jan-Krzysztof Duda refused to shake the hand of his Russian opponent Denis Khismatullin during last month's International Chess Federation’s World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships, footage from the event shows. Khistamullin has not filed a formal complaint about the snub.

The high-profile tournament took place in Uzbekistan at the end of December although the incident only made headlines on Tuesday after a video of it surfaced online.

In the footage, Khismatullin extends his hand towards Duda, an obligatory ritual before the start of a match, and the Pole is seen refusing the gesture.

Their game ended in a draw. According to World Chess Federation (FIDE) rules, the handshake between opponents is a mark of mutual of respect ahead of every game. Duda could have been disqualified if Khismatullin had filed a complaint, but the Russian opted not to do so, newspaper Sport-Express newspaper reported

Last summer, Ukrainian competitor Olga Kharlan ended up being disqualified from the World Fencing Championships in Italy after refusing to shake hands with her Russian rival Anna Smirnova. However, following an intervention from IOC president Thomas Bach, Kharlan was allowed to take part in a team event at that same tournament and was also granted automatic qualification for this year’s Olympics in Paris.

Poland has been one of Ukraine’s main supporters in the EU amid the conflict with Russia, supplying Kiev with arms, accepting around 1.5 million Ukrainian refugees, and consistently advocating more sanctions against Moscow.

However, a falling-out between the neighbors occurred in September after Ukraine filed a now-suspended complaint to the World Trade Organization (WTO) over a ban by Poland and some other EU states on Ukrainian grain deliveries. Warsaw said it would focus on its own security and would not be sending weapons to Ukraine anymore, except some old, decommissioned ones.

Currently, Polish truckers continue to block border crossings in protest against the EU’s decision to exempt their Ukrainian counterparts from having to seek permits to enter the bloc. They argue that measures introduced by Brussels after the outbreak of the conflict between Moscow and Kiev led to unfair competition and drove down the prices of agricultural products. Talks between Kiev and Warsaw have so far been unable to resolve the deadlock.

FIDE, FIFA and IOC are not World Sports Organizations, both are Western Organizations that camouflage themselves for sports in the world, their aim is to rake in championship money for the Alliance of Western Countries
