Nasser Hospital ‘place of death’ says UN, as power fails and patients die

Khan Younis’ besigedNasser Medical Complex has become “place of death”, says UN official after aid visit.

The group Medecins Sans Frontieres , also known as Doctors Without Borders, has released a statement strongly condemning an Israeli attack on an MSF shelter in Al-Mawasi yesterday that killed two of the group’s staff family members and injured six.

According to the statement, an Israeli tank fired on a home sheltering 64 MSF employees and family members, killing the wife and daughter-in-law of an MSF worker. MSF says that Israeli forces had been “clearly informed of the precise location of this MSF shelter in Al-Mawasi,” and that the building was additionally identified with a large MSF flag.

The group says that bullets were also fired at the “clearly marked” MSF shelter, and that nearby shelling prevented an ambulance from reaching the facility to assist the wounded for more than two hours.

A 15-year-old Palestinian boy was killed by Israel forces in the occupied West Bank town of Azzun, the Palestinian Health Ministry says.

“These killings underscore the grim reality that nowhere in Gaza is safe, that promises of safe areas are empty and deconfliction mechanisms unreliable,” said MSF general director Meinie Nicolai. “The amount of force being used in densely populated urban environments is staggering, and targeting a building knowing it is full of humanitarian workers and their families is unconscionable.”

Red Crescent still retrieving corpses from hospital vicinity

The PRCS says its teams retrieved a decomposed body from the vicinity of al-Amal Hospital in Khan Younis.

In pictures it posted on X, the shrouded body of an unknown male can be seen as staff pray before burial as is customary in Muslim tradition.

British MPs walk out of parliament over ceasefire vote row

Members have walked out of the UK Parliament after debate erupted over the nature of a Gaza ceasefire motion.

The Scottish National Party (SNP) had called for an unequivocal and immediate ceasefire, while an amendment was advanced to add numerous caveats about Israel’s ability to address military threats from Hamas, more in line with the position of the Labour Party.

More left-wing and Muslim members of that party have expressed disappointment over what they see as an insufficiently firm stance in favour of a ceasefire. The Conservatives also put forward an amendment that calls instead for a temporary pause in the fighting. A number of people stormed out in protest when both amendments were brought up for a vote, instead of just one as is the norm.

Ukraine had secret torture and burial places in the city of Avdeyevka as per preliminary information, Russian Foreign Ministry special envoy Rodion Miroshnik told Sputnik on Tuesday.

According to the head of the Donetsk People's Republic, Denis Pushilin, many war crimes against the civilian population of Avdeyevka by the Ukrainian armed forces have been recorded.

"We do not exclude the possibility that we will receive information about secret prisons, secret burials and the consequences of torture, about which we have preliminary information. Therefore, this work will now be launched," Miroshnik said.

Kiev held residents of Avdeyevka in custody for political reasons, according to preliminary information, the diplomat said, adding that in order to accurately establish these places and obtain documentary evidence, it is now necessary to work with people who are leaving the city.

The work is being carried out with the residents of liberated Avdeyevka to collect information about Kiev's crimes, he added.

Up to 1,000 Ukrainian Troops Believed to Be Captured in Retreat From Avdeyevka - Reports

Between 850 and 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers appear to have been captured or are unaccounted for during the Ukrainian retreat from Avdeyevka, a former Ukrainian stronghold north of the city of Donetsk, The New York Times reported on Tuesday, citing two Ukrainian soldiers.

The newspaper cited senior Western officials and soldiers fighting in Ukraine as saying that the retreat of Ukrainian troops from Avdeyevka is a devastating loss that could deal a blow to already weakening morale and may be more significant than it initially seemed.

The report also cited officials as saying that the Ukrainian withdrawal was ill-planned and began too late, but American officials told the newspaper that the loss of Avdeyevka was not a significant strategic setback.

However, the report said, American officials believe that morale among Ukrainian soldiers was already eroding against the background of a failed counteroffensive in 2023 and the removal of Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi, which may further complicate Kiev's efforts to recruit soldiers.

On Saturday, Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi announced the decision to withdraw troops from Avdeyevka, a northern suburb of Donetsk. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the decision to pull out the troops had been made to "save people's lives." Later, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the Russian military had taken full control of the city of Avdeyevka.

Only West Can Undermine Zelensky, Not Loss of Avdeyevka - Ukrainian Opposition Politician

The fact that Russian military took control of Avdeyevka cannot undermine the position of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, only Western countries can do this, Ukrainian opposition politician Viktor Medvedchuk told Sputnik.

On February 17, Oleksandr Syrsky, Ukrainian commander-in-chief, announced the decision to withdraw units from the city of Avdeyevka. The Russian Defense Ministry, in turn, said that the Russian military had taken full control of the city.

"Only the Western masters, who exercise leadership over him, can undermine Zelensky’s position in this regard. Because any other actions, any independence or slack in carrying out some elements of state policy are unrealistic without the permission of external government," Medvedchuk said, commenting on Ukraine's withdrawal from Avdeyevk

Medvedchuk also told Sputnik that the Ukrainian economy can be restored only in cooperation with Russia. "To restore the level of welfare, the income level of the people, we proceeded from the fact that it is necessary to restore economic and trade relations, first of all, with Russia and the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) countries," he noted.

Medvedchuk added that it is "necessary to restore the realization of our exports, it is necessary to increase production and industrial capacities."

"But it can be done only in cooperation with Russia. Because our economy as part of the cycle of the overall industrial potential of the Soviet Union has always been tied to Russia and other countries, other republics of the Soviet Union, but not to Europe," he added.

Between November 2013 and February 2014, Kiev's Maidan Square witnessed pro-EU protests, sparked by the then-Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych's refusal to sign the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement. The mass demonstrations led to a coup that culminated in Yanukovych's ouster. More than 100 people were killed in the violent events.

The United States and Russia will present arguments on Wednesday in proceedings at the U.N.'s highest court examining the legality of Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories.

More than 50 states will present arguments until Feb. 26. Egypt and France were also scheduled to speak on Wednesday.

On Monday, Palestinian representatives asked the judges to declare Israel's occupation of their territory illegal and said its opinion could help reach a two-state solution.

On Tuesday, 10 states including South Africa were overwhelmingly critically of Israel's conduct in the occupied territories, with many urging the court to declare the occupation illegal.

Russia’s representative calls for vicious circle to be broken in Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Vladimir Tarabrin, Russia’s ambassador to the Netherlands, has taken the floor summarising the suffering of the Palestinian people, condemning the October 7 attack on Israel, but slamming the Israeli retaliation as “collective punishment” that cannot be justified.

H.E. Mr. Vladimir Tarabrin, Ambassador ofd the Russian Federation, accredited to the OPCW.

He said:

  • Images from Gaza are terrifying. Indiscriminate air strikes are killing civilians and erasing whole residential districts … Up to 90 percent of Gazans have been forced to leave their homes and they are living in inhumane conditions. Against the backdrop of tough Israeli blockade the Gaza Strip is experiencing a genuine humanitarian catastrophe.

  • Russia of all countries understands the danger of terrorism. We have faced this evil time and again. Let me use this opportunity to reiterate our heartfelt condolences to the Israelis who lost their loved ones in the attack on the 7th of October. Brutal massacre of innocent people, taking of hostages and other terrorist violence do not have and cannot have any justification.

  • We are convinced the tragic events of the 7th of October cannot justify the collective punishment of more than 2 million Gazans. We cannot accept the logic of those officials in Israel and some Western countries who try to defend the indiscriminate violence against civilians by referring to Israel’s duty to protect its nationals. Violence can only lead to more violence. Hatred brings hatred. This vicious circle must be broken.

Russia follows US arguments after a break. The creation of a Palestinian state is the “most reliable” solution for peace in Israel and fighting alone won’t ensure security, Russia said previously.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in October that Moscow had “serious questions” about Western policy on Israel, noting wars and turmoil continue because “the main reason [for the conflict] needs to be eliminated”.

“The Palestinian problem should not be delayed further,” Lavrov said at the time.

Russia invited representatives of all Palestinian factions – including Fatah and Hamas – to Moscow for talks on Monday. President Vladimir Putin said earlier this month Moscow could play the role of mediator, thanks to its friendly ties with both Israel and the Palestinians, adding “No one could suspect us of playing up to one party”.

ICJ hearing resumes

The hearing has resumed for the afternoon session. The Russian Federation is the first to take the floor.

We’ll bring you more live updates shortly.

Why South Africa sued Israel for genocide

The ICJ also recently heard a case brought by South Africa accusing Israel of genocide.

Rulings by the ICJ are legally binding, but the court has no way of enforcing them. So will it make a difference as the Israeli war on Gaza goes on?

Egypt on Israeli occupation of Palestine

Egypt’s Jasmine Moussa said Palestine has been subjected to the “longest protracted occupation in modern history” as she denounced “the ongoing obstruction of the Palestinian people’s inalienable, permanent and unqualified right to self-determination”.

Egypt’s representative says there is “overwhelming evidence that Israeli support for and maintenance of settlements is intended to permanently alter the demographic composition of the occupied Palestinian territory and extend Israeli sovereignty over it”.

“This is coupled with Israel’s mass forcible transfer and forced displacement of the Palestinians in Gaza through its illegal evacuation orders and indiscriminate use of force,” Moussa says.

Egypt’s Jasmine Moussa

Cairo wants the “establishment of a viable Palestinian state on the pre-1967 lines with East Jerusalem as its capital”, she said.

Moussa highlighted the “ongoing violation by Israel of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination from its prolonged occupation, settlement and annexation of the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967”.

Egypt’s legal counsellor Jasmine Moussa has taken the floor. She says the ongoing grave violations of international law are part of a “wider policy aimed at dispossessing Palestinians of their land”, which is “manifestly illegal and renders the occupation as a whole unlawful”.

“It is shocking that some states do not want the court to render its legal opinion. What message does this send on their respect for international justice and the rule of law?” she asked.

The court has jurisdiction on the matter, Moussa added. “Rather than prejudicing the peace process, it would serve as an additional, essential element for the UN General Assembly to carry out its role. This is critical given the complete absence of any real prospect for a peaceful solution.”

Israeli violations ‘worsening at an alarming pace’: UAE

Nusseibeh says the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories has rapidly deteriorated over the past year.

“The level of human suffering for people in Gaza is on a level rarely seen in human history. Israel has imposed a policy of collective punishment on the Palestinian people,” she said.

Last year was by far the deadliest year for Palestinian in the occupied West Bank with the highest level of settler violence recorded by the UN, she added.

“I raise these recent developments to underline that the violations at the core of the questions posed by the General Assembly are not static. After decades of violent dehumanisation, dispossession and despair, the breaches resulting from the Israeli occupation are worsening at an alarming pace,” she said.

The UAE’s envoy also underlined the unique character of the city of Jerusalem and said it has “given rise to specific legal obligations including specific guarantees of access”.

Lana Nusseibeh, the United Arab Emirates ambassador to the United Nations, is now speaking.

“International law cannot be an a la carte menu. It must apply equally to all, and it is all the more essential in the long shadow cast by the Palestinian question and injustice that has persisted for more than seven decades,” she said.

The UAE believes the only path to “just and lasting peace is through the fulfilment of the long-denied right of the Palestinian people to self-determination with an independent and sovereign Palestine based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital”, Nusseibeh added.

The navy of the United Kingdom has carried out an unsuccessful launch of a Trident II intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) from the HMS Vanguard ballistic missile-armed submarine while UK Defense Secretary Grant Shapps was on board, The Sun reported on Tuesday, citing sources and the UK Ministry of Defense.

The report said the missile dramatically misfired and crashed into the water just feet from the submarine that launched it. The missile was launched into the air, but the first-stage boosters did not ignite, and the missile carrying dummy warheads splashed into the water and sank, the report read.

"It left the submarine but it just went plop, right next to them," a source told the newspaper.

The newspaper reported that the incident occurred on January 30 off the coast of the US state of Florida. A probe into the circumstances of the incident was immediately launched, and a search was ordered to recover the top-secret missile technology from the seabed, the report said.

The UK Ministry of Defense said in a statement issued to the newspaper that an "anomaly occurred" during the launch but assured that London's nuclear deterrent remains "effective."

The statement above is intended as a bluff to the eastern bloc and to avoid losing face after the missile test failed as an attempt to scare the eastern bloc.

"HMS Vanguard and her crew have been proven fully capable of operating the UK’s Continuous At-Sea Deterrent, passing all tests during a recent demonstration and shakedown operation (DASO) - a routine test to confirm that the submarine can return to service following deep maintenance work. The test has reaffirmed the effectiveness of the UK’s nuclear deterrent, in which we have absolute confidence. During the test an anomaly occurred. As a matter of national security, we cannot provide further information on this, however we are confident that the anomaly was event specific, and therefore there are no implications for the reliability of the wider Trident missile systems and stockpile. The UK’s nuclear deterrent remains safe, secure and effective," the report quoted the ministry as saying.

The newspaper reported earlier that the UK Navy was preparing to carry out the first launch of a Trident II ICBM for the first time since 2016 in the Atlantic Ocean. The missile was planned to fly over 6,000 kilometers (3,700 miles) before splashing between Brazil and West Africa.

The previous launch of a Trident II ICBM from a UK submarine in 2016 also failed. The missile was planned to fly 9,000 kilometers from the Florida coast to a target southeast of Ascension Island, but it reportedly veered off course toward the United States and self-destructed.
