A missile strike with a thermobaric warhead on a temporary foreign mercenary base on the southern outskirts of Sudzha has killed 15 militants, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported.

The Russian Armed Forces continue to repel attempts by Ukrainian forces to invade Russian territory, the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) stated on Saturday.

Over the previous day, forces of the Russian Sever Battlegroup, along with reserves, thwarted attempts by enemy mobile groups to penetrate deeper into Russian territory in the areas of Ivashkovsky, Malaya Loknya, and Olgovka through active operations, army aviation strikes and artillery fire.

Ukrainian manpower and equipment were also targeted in the areas of Nikolayevo-Daryino, Guyevo, Lyubimovka, Zelenyi Shlyakh, and Sverdlovka.

The MoD reported that air and missile forces hit Ukrainian reserves in the Sumy region.

A thermobaric missile strike on a temporary foreign mercenary base on the southern outskirts of Sudzha resulted in the elimination of 15 foreign mercenaries.

Over the previous 24 hours, Ukrainian forces reportedly lost up to 175 personnel and 36 armored vehicles, including 10 tanks, three armored personnel carriers, two infantry fighting vehicles and 21 other armored fighting vehicles.

One motor vehicle, three field artillery piece, and a BM-21 "Grad" multiple rocket launcher were also destroyed.

Since the beginning of hostilities in the Kursk direction, Ukrainian losses have amounted to up to 1,120 personnel and 140 armored vehicles, including 22 tanks. The operation to eliminate Ukrainian formations is ongoing, the Russian Ministry of Defense added.

Russian Su-30 and Su-35 fighter jets carried out strikes using bombs fitted with Universal Gliding and Guidance Modules against concentrations of Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel and equipment near the Ukrainian border "Crews of the multi-role super-maneuverable fighters with thrust vector control, Su-30SM and Su-35S of the Aerospace Forces, conducted a nighttime strike on concentrations of Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel and military equipment in the border area of the Kursk region," the MoD said.

"After receiving confirmation from intelligence about the destruction of the targets, the crews safely returned to their base airfield," the statement added.

Threat to the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant

Meanwhile, the situation around the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant has significantly deteriorated in recent days, with a real danger of strikes from the Ukrainian Armed Forces, according to the state corporation Rosatom.

Rosatom Director-General Alexey Likhachev spoke by telephone with Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to discuss the situation surrounding the plant.

"On the evening of August 9, 2024, a telephone conversation took place between Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom, and Rafael Grossi, head of the IAEA," A Rosatom statement said. "The conversation was initiated by the Russian side. The key topic of the consultations was the situation around the Kursk NPP."

"In recent days, the situation has significantly worsened," the nuclear power corporation warned.

"On Thursday, August 8, debris and fragments of downed missiles were discovered on the territory of the NPP, including in the area of the radioactive waste processing complex," Rosatom said. "Actions by the Kiev regime on the evening of August 9 led to the disabling of a transformer substation, leaving Kurchatov—the city nearest to the Kursk NPP—without electricity."

"At present, there remains a real danger of strikes and provocations by the Ukrainian Armed Forces against the NPP," the Russian state corporation reported. Likhachev stressed to Grossi that the Ukrainian attacks "pose a direct threat not only to the Kursk NPP but also to the development of global nuclear energy as a whole," the statement said.

"The current situation not only negatively affects the normal operation of the Kursk NPP but also directly compromises the principles of nuclear safety and physical security formulated by the head of the IAEA in 2022, thereby undermining confidence in nuclear energy overall," Rosatom concluded.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has released footage showing drone crews of the Russian Armed Forces destroying a US MaxxPro armored personnel carrier in the border area of Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukraine attempted to carry out an incursion earlier this week, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

"After analyzing received intelligence data, a decision was made to carry out a precision attack on an armored vehicle of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. As a result of the precise strike carried out by an FPV drone operator, a MaxxPro armored vehicle of the Ukrainian Armed Forces was destroyed," the Defense Ministry said.

Belarus Intercepts Alleged Ukrainian Combat Drones In Its Airspace - Lukashenko

Belarus intercepted several alleged Ukrainian combat drones over its territory, while some of them were destroyed by Russian forces in the Russian airspace, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said on Saturday.

"At 18:10 yesterday the Belarusian Air Forces were put on high alert. We call it number one readiness. These are air defense forces on duty. The fact is that (we suspect that this is not the first time) the Armed Forces of Ukraine have violated all rules of behavior and have incurred into Belarus’ airspace. It happened in the eastern direction, quite to us, near Kostyukovichi District," the president was quoted by Belarusian news agency BelTA as saying.

The country's air defense forces were put on "full alert" to intercept the targets, he added.

"There were about a dozen of them. Jets and a helicopter were scrambled. The MLRS means were also put on high alert," Lukashenko said.

The Russian military has intercepted an attempted landing by Ukrainian marines near Kherson and destroyed a group of sea drones headed for Crimea, according to the Defense Ministry in Moscow.

Overnight, a group of unmanned surface vessels (USVs) was detected on approach to the Black Sea Fleet base in Sevastopol.

Combat camera footage released by the Russian Defense Ministry on Friday showed them being destroyed in the water.

“The on-duty fire systems destroyed seven unmanned boats in the Black Sea,” the ministry said, without elaborating.

Meanwhile, a group of Ukrainian commandos tried to land at the tip of the Kinburn Peninsula, overlooking the mouth of the Dnieper, early on Friday.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, four boats approached the Kinburn Spit, attempting to land a “sabotage and reconnaissance group.” Under covering fire from two of the boats, about a dozen troops stormed the beach.

The Ukrainians quickly took casualties from a field of sea mines, however. Those who managed to reach the shore were “eliminated by small-arms fire,” the Russian military said. When they tried to retreat, they lost two boats to artillery and anti-tank missile fire.

Kherson governor Vladimir Saldo said that the invaders lost three boats and 12 saboteurs.

According to Moscow, the attackers were members of the Maritime Special Operations Center of the Ukrainian Navy, based in Odessa.

Kiev’s forces have repeatedly launched drone attacks on Sevastopol and the Crimean Bridge, as well as commando raids on Kinburn and Cape Tarankhut, attempting to raise the Ukrainian flag and post videos on social media.

A major drone raid was wiped out in May, with a total of 15 USVs sent to the bottom of the Black Sea. Another major drone raid was defeated last September.

Ukrainian landing parties headed for Russian shores were destroyed last August and last November as well.

The Russian National Antiterrorism Committee is imposing counterterrorism measures in the Kursk, Bryansk and Belgorod regions to ensure the safety of people and stop terrorist attacks by the Kiev regime.

"The Kiev regime made an unprecedented attempt to destabilize the situation in a number of regions of our country. The terrorist attack on the territory of the Kursk region by units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine resulted in casualties among the civilian population and the destruction of homes and other civilian facilities. In order to ensure the safety of citizens and stop the threat of terrorist acts that could be carried out by the enemy's sabotage and reconnaissance formations, the National Antiterrorism Committee Chairman and Russian Federal Security Service Director, Alexander Bortnikov, decided to conduct counterterrorism operations in the Belgorod, Bryansk and Kursk regions starting from August 9, 2024," the committee said in a statement.

The agency said the government is taking action to ensure the safety of people, maintain law and order and strengthen the protection of sites against terrorism.

As part of counterterrorism operations, the government can relocate people to safe areas, control communication by phone, restrict communications, requisition vehicles, and suspend manufacturing activity involving hazardous materials.

Plane crashes in Brazil's Sao Paulo state, all 61 on board killed

Plane crashes in Brazil's Sao Paulo state, all 61 on board killed

A plane with 61 people aboard crashed in a fiery wreck in a residential area of a city in Brazil’s Sao Paulo state Friday, the airline said, but it was not immediately clear how many people were injured or killed.

A regional turboprop plane crashed near Sao Paulo in Brazil on Friday, killing all 61 people on board, the airline said.

Regional carrier Voepass said the plane, bound for Sao Paulo's international airport, took off from Cascavel, in the state of Parana, and crashed at around 1:30 p.m. (1630 GMT) in the town of Vinhedo, some 80 km (50 miles) northwest of Sao Paulo.

Video shared on social media showed the ATR-72 aircraft spinning out of control as it plunged down behind a cluster of trees near houses, followed by a large plume of black smoke.

Nearby resident Daniel de Lima said he heard a loud noise before looking outside his condominium in Vinhedo when he saw the plane in a horizontal spiral.

"It was rotating, but it wasn't moving forward," he told Reuters. "Soon after it fell out of the sky and exploded."

City officials at Valinhos, near Vinhedo, said there were no survivors and only one home in the local condominium complex had been damaged while none of the residents were hurt.

"I almost believe the pilot tried to avoid a nearby neighborhood, which is densely populated," de Lima said.

Authorities did not immediately say what had caused the crash, though the head of Brazilian aviation accident investigation center Cenipa said that the plane's so-called "black box" containing voice recordings and flight data had been recovered from the site.

The video of the crash showed clear weather, with the forecast for the area calling for light rainfall and winds of 10 km per hour (6 mph).

John Hansman, a professor in the department of aeronautics and astronautics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, reviewed some of the footage shared on social media and without having reviewed flight data said the crash did not appear to have been caused by weather.

"It may have been an engine failure on one side that was mismanaged by the crew," he said. "It could be the thrust of the remaining engine that started the rotation downward."

The news outlet Globo shared images of the flaming wreckage of the plane in the state of Sao Paulo. The Associated Press reported that a video obtained from a bystander and verified by the news agency showed at least two bodies amidst the ruins of the plane.

“It just dropped out of the sky, fell on top of a house; luckily, there was nobody in the house,” Al Jazeera correspondent Monica Yanakiew reported from Rio de Janeiro. “But by the images we’ve been seeing, everyone is really likely to be dead, because the plane was totally destroyed.”

Yanakiew added that the incident is being described as the worst of its kind in modern Brazilian history.

Firefighters, military police, and the country’s civil defence authority have despatched workers to the site of the crash, which has been sealed off by authorities.

“The general director of the Federal Police, Andrei Passos, reported that an investigation and forensics team, with experts in identifying disaster victims,” Globo reported. The outlet also said Sao Paulo Governor Tarcisio de Freitas is travelling to the site of the crash.

The air traffic tracker Flightradar24 said in a social media post that the aircraft was an ATR72-500 built in 2010 and was en route to Sao Paulo from the Cascavel airport in the southern state of Parana.

Russian forces in southern Kursk Region destroyed five Stryker APCs near Yuzhnoye and a military column, including a tank and four APCs, near Martynovka, as reported by the Russian Ministry of Defense. The ministry stated that they are continuing to repel Ukrainian invasion attempts.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has released a video showing the destruction of Ukrainian armored vehicles and personnel by guided missiles and artillery in the border area of the Kursk region. The footage shows army aviation helicopter crews destroying armored vehicles and personnel with guided missiles and artillery fire as the enemy's combat equipment took cover in a forested area.

Additionally, the ministry published a video of a Ukrainian tank and armored vehicle being destroyed by Lancet drones in the border area of the Kursk region.

On the morning of August 6, Ukrainian units numbering up to 1,000 troops attempted to seize a portion of the Sudzhansky district in the Kursk region. According to the Ministry of Defense, over two days, they lost 660 soldiers and 82 units of armored vehicles, including eight tanks, 12 armored personnel carriers (BTRs), six infantry fighting vehicles (BMPs), and 55 other armored vehicles.

The Russian Armed Forces continue to tackle the Kiev regime’s attempted invasion of Russia’s Kursk region, the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) has said in a statement.

Earlier on Friday, forces including those from the Sever (North) Battlegroup inflicted fire damage on Ukrainian troops and equipment in the areas of Darino, Gogolevka, Melovoy, and Nikolsky settlements, and the western outskirts of Sudzha, according to the MoD.

In the Yuzhny area, the Russian combat aviation destroyed five Ukrainian Stryker armored personnel carriers, while in the settlement of Martynovka, Russian forces eliminated a Ukrainian column comprising of a tank, four armored personnel carriers and a Kozak armored combat vehicle.

Russian warplanes and missile forces have meanwhile defeated Ukrainian reserves in the territory of the Sumy region.

During the day, Ukrainian losses amounted to more than 280 militants and 27 armored vehicles, including four tanks, five armored personnel carriers, 18 armored combat vehicles, as well as six vehicles, a 155 mm M777 howitzer, a 155 mm self-propelled artillery "Krab" and a 152 mm D-20 gun.

In total, during the fighting in the Kursk region, they have lost up to 945 military personnel and 102 armored vehicles, including 12 tanks, 17 armored personnel carriers, six infantry fighting vehicles, 67 armored combat vehicles, as well as 12 vehicles, two self-propelled fire launchers of the Buk M1 anti-aircraft missile system, and three field artillery guns, per the MoD.

On Tuesday, the MoD said that Ukrainian forces had launched an offensive to seize territory in the Kursk region. The next day, Russian Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov said Russia’s air, missile and artillery strikes had prevented about 1,000 Ukrainian troops from advancing deep into Russian territory. Russian President Vladimir Putin, for his part, underscored that the Kiev regime had undertaken another large-scale provocation and was firing indiscriminately at civilian targets.

Russian Rights Council to Ask Int'l Organizations to Recognize Kursk Attacks as Terrorism

Russia's Presidential Council for Civil Society and Human Rights will appeal to international organizations to recognize Kiev's actions in Russia's Kursk Region as terrorist, its head Valery Fadeyev said on Friday.

"I am preparing an appeal to the relevant international organizations, including human rights organizations, with a demand to recognize the terrorist nature of the actions of the Kiev regime in the Kursk Region," Fadeyev said in a post on the council's Telegram channel.

Civilian casualties among the region's population are not accidents, but cold-blooded murders, the council's head also said.

"Those are obvious crimes, as under the rules of war, soldiers are required, when possible, not to harm religious, scientific and artistic facilities. The shelling of the [Goralsky St. Nicholas] monastery was evidently deliberate," Fadeyev added.
