Western allies began pouring weapons and ammunition into Ukraine shortly after Russia launched its military operation in February 2022. The Kremlin has repeatedly warned that further escalation would lead to NATO's direct involvement in the conflict.

The Russian Defense Ministry has released footage of Russian troops destroying a platoon of Ukrainian Leopard 2A6 tanks in the Svatovsk region as they attempted to attack Russian positions.

The video shows three Leopard 2A6s with distinctive additional turret protection being hit for assured destruction by multiple munitions, including Lancet kamikaze drones.

The Leopard 2 is a main battle tank widely used by several European countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. It is equipped with a 120 mm smoothbore gun, a powerful engine, and sophisticated armor protection.

The Russian Ka-52 Alligator is a highly advanced attack helicopter that has been in service with the Russian Army since the mid-2000s. It is a multirole aircraft capable of performing a wide range of missions, including reconnaissance, air support, and anti-tank operations.

The Russian Defense Ministry has released footage of a Russian Army Aviation strike group hitting Ukrainian strongholds and manpower in the Krasny Liman area. The attack was carried out with S-8 unguided air missiles. The group included several Ka-52 Alligator reconnaissance and attack helicopters.

As the commander of the Ka-52 helicopter noted, after the combat mission, the crews performed an anti-missile maneuver and returned to the base.

Russian Armed Forces Receive New Yastreb-AV Artillery Reconnaissance System

The artillery reconnaissance system is designed to provide intelligence and targeting data to artillery units. Using advanced sensors, communication systems, and data processing capabilities, the system enables artillery commanders to quickly and accurately identify enemy positions.

Russian troops in the special military operation are using the new Yastreb-AV artillery reconnaissance system as part of counter-battery combat, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The new 1K148 Yastreb-AV has been put into service with Russian artillery units in the special military operation zone. Together with the Zoopark-1M complex, Yastreb-AV provides detection of Ukrainian artillery firing positions. At the same time, the characteristics of the new complex are superior.

"Today, the effective performance of combat tasks by missile operators and artillerymen, together with the use of UAVs, which increases the effectiveness of artillery fire and survivability on the battlefield, is also ensured by the use of modern artillery reconnaissance equipment such as Zoopark-1M and Yastreb-AV," the ministry said in a statement.

The 1K148 Yastreb-AV radar complex is capable of automatically tracking the trajectory of shells fired by enemy artillery and determining the exact coordinates of their positions. The system is mounted on a four-axle BAZ-6910-025 chassis. The rear part of the chassis is designed for the installation of an antenna mast with a large-area canvas.

Particular characteristics of the Yastreb-AV have not been disclosed, while tests were completed in late 2021 or early 2022, and it was recently delivered to Russian troops.

Five people were killed in the crash. (AFP)

5 people were killed when a Japan Airlines aircraft hit a coastguard plane as it came into land on the runway of Tokyo’s Haneda Airport on Tuesday, erupting in a ball of flames.

The airline revealed that there were 367 passengers and 12 crew on board Flight 516 when the fire broke out. All of them have been evacuated, with no reports of injuries so far

The Japan Coast Guard has confirmed that one of its aircraft collided with the Airbus A350 belonging to Japan Airlines shortly before it burst into flames.

Dramatic video footage shows the moment the plane was coming into land and struck the coastguard aircraft that was carrying relief aid for victims of yesterday's earthquake, at about 5:55 p.m. local time.

The Japan Coast Guard said that there were six crew on board a fixed-wing plane that collided with the passenger plane. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department later confirmed that five of them had died, with one more person seriously injured

The Airbus A350 was conducting a domestic flight when the fire broke out at around 6pm local time on Tuesday.

NHK showed several fire engines battling the flames that engulfed the plane. Fire and thick black smoke could be seen billowing out of the windows and exits.

According to Haneda Airport representatives, all runways have been closed since around 6pm local time.

Footage shared on social media showed passengers shouting inside the smoke-filled cabin.

Only one person has been accounted for from the coastguard aircraft that was carrying aid to parts of the country hit by yesterday's earthquake.

Firefighters are tackling the blaze and it is believed all 400 passengers have been evacuated from the passenger jet.

Japanese news agency JNN said people who appear to be passengers could be seen escaping from the aircraft.

Japanese Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio instructed relevant agencies to coordinate to assess the damage swiftly and provide information to the public, according to his office.

Haneda has closed all runways following the incident, a spokesperson for the airport said.

Powerful blasts reported in Ukrainian cities

Powerful explosions rocked several Ukrainian cities on Tuesday morning, according to local officials. The reported strikes came after Russia accused Kiev of carrying out deadly “terrorist attacks” on Donetsk and Belgorod, vowing retaliation.

The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed the strikes, saying it had used drones and long-range, high-precision weapons to target Ukrainian defense industry facilities that produce missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and other military equipment.

The attack was also aimed at destroying storage facilities loaded with missiles and various types of ammunition, including those provided by Kiev’s Western backers, officials said, adding that “all targets have been hit.”

Blasts were reported in several districts of Kiev by its mayor, Vitaly Klitschko, in the early hours of Tuesday morning. He said that some facilities and residential buildings had been cut off from power, adding that “in some areas, there is a temporary lack of pressure in the water supply network.”

Ukraine’s Energy Ministry claimed that the strikes had left about 260,000 of the city’s residents without access to electricity.

According to the mayor, there were several fires in Podolsky district in the western part of the Ukrainian capital; one warehouse building was affected. He added that another warehouse was on fire in the northwest of the capital.

Later, Klitschko claimed that 20 people had been injured as a result of a rocket strike in western Solomensky district, and that 19 of them had been hospitalized.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia scrambled nine MiG-31 fighters, which launched a barrage of Kinzhal hypersonic missiles. It also warned of “significant activity of enemy tactical aviation” in the waters of the Sea of Azov.

Several videos posted on social media show large fires in the Ukrainian capital, with one clip purporting to show a missile flying over the city.

Ukrainian officials also said that Moscow launched a “massive rocket attack” on Kharkov, which is located near the country’s border with Russia and less than 80 km away from Belgorod. Oleg Sinegubov, the head of the regional administration, claimed that there had been at least six rocket strikes, adding that there have been dozens of casualties.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky claimed that four people died in the strikes and that another 92 were wounded, adding that the country’s emergency services are working to eliminate the fallout from the attack.

Vassily Nebenzia, Moscow’s envoy to the UN, said on Saturday that Kiev often deploys its air defense systems in residential districts in violation of international law, resulting in casualties among civilians.

The attack comes after the Russian Defense Ministry said it had carried out high-precision missile strikes on Sunday, on airports where Ukrainian jets carrying UK-supplied Storm Shadow missiles were based. It claimed that all targets had been hit.

On Saturday, Ukrainian forces launched a powerful missile barrage at the Russian border city of Belgorod, killing 25 people, including five children, and injuring 109. Overnight on December 31-January 1, they also shelled Donetsk, with the strike claiming the lives of four people and wounding another 13.

On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Kiev’s terrorist attacks wouldn’t go unanswered, vowing to ramp up strikes on Ukrainian military infrastructure. He stressed, however, that Moscow had no plans to retaliate in kind by targeting civilians.

Pavement was left cracked in the city of Wajima, after a major 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck Japan's Noto region.

A total of 29 earthquakes with a maximum magnitude of 7.6 occurred in the Japanese prefectures of Ishikawa and Niigata in two hours on Monday, according to data analyzed by Sputnik.

The underground tremors started at 4:06 p.m. local time (07:06 GMT). At least six houses have collapsed following the seismic activity, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said.

"As of now, six buildings have collapsed, with a possibility of people remaining under the rubble," Hayashi said, adding that the authorities did not possess any information about the injuries.

When asked to comment on the reports in Japanese media about the collapses of around 100 buildings, Hayashi said that the Japanese government was verifying the information.

No disruptions at Japanese nuclear power plants have been reported following a series of strong earthquakes in the country's west on Monday, while the toll of casualties is being tabulated, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said.

No emergency reports have been received, in particular, from the Shika nuclear power plants in Ishikawa prefecture, which is believed to be affected by the quake the most, Hayashi said.

The recent earthquake in the Japanese prefecture of Ishikawa has become the strongest on the Noto peninsula since 1885 when record started, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said on Monday.

Japan dropped its highest-level tsunami alert after issuing one following a series of major earthquakes Monday but told residents of coastal areas not to return to their homes as deadly waves could still come.

The quakes, the largest of which had a magnitude of 7.6, started a fire and collapsed buildings on the west coast of Japan’s main island, Honshu. It was unclear how many people might have been killed or hurt.

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported more than a dozen strong quakes in the Japan Sea off the coast of Ishikawa and nearby prefectures starting shortly after 4 p.m. local time.

At least six homes were damaged by the quakes, with people trapped inside, government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi said. A fire broke out in Wajima city, Ishikawa Prefecture, and electricity was out for more than 30,000 households, he said.

The meteorological agency initially issued a major tsunami warning for Ishikawa and lower-level tsunami warnings or advisories for the rest of the western coast of Honshu, as well as for the northernmost of the country’s main islands, Hokkaido.

Hayashi stressed that it was critical for people to move away from coastal areas.

“Every minute counts. Please evacuate to a safe area immediately,” he said.

The warning was downgraded to a regular tsunami several hours later, meaning the sea could still generate waves of up to 3 meters (10 feet). Aftershocks could also slam the same area over the next few days, the agency said.

Japanese public broadcaster NHK TV initially warned that torrents of water could reach as high as 5 meters (16.5 feet). The network continued to air warnings hours later as aftershocks rocked the region.

People returning to get their wallets and other belongings have been known to be swept away and drowned even hours after the first evacuation warning. People were evacuated to stadiums, where they will likely have to stay for a few days.

Japanese media footage showed people running through the streets, and red smoke spewing from a fire in a residential neighborhood. Photos showed a crowd of people, including a woman with a baby on her back, standing by huge cracks that had ripped through the pavement.

The Meteorological Agency said in a nationally broadcast news conference that more major quakes could hit the area over the next week, especially in the next two or three days.

More than a dozen strong quakes had been detected in the region, with risks of setting off landslides and houses collapsing, according to the agency.

Takashi Wakabayashi, a worker at a convenience store in Ishikawa Prefecture, said some items had tumbled from the shelves, but the biggest problem was the huge crowd of people who arrived to stock up on bottled water, rice balls and bread.

“We have customers at three times the level of usual,” he said.

Tsunami warnings were also issued for parts of North Korea and Russia.

The Japanese government has set up a special emergency center to gather information on the quakes and tsunami and relay them speedily to residents to ensure safety, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters.

Japan is an extremely quake-prone nation, but a tsunami warning of the magnitude of Monday’s had not been issued since a major quake and tsunami caused meltdowns at a nuclear plant in March 2011.

Government spokesman Hayashi told reporters that nuclear plants in the affected area did not report any irregularities Monday. Nuclear regulators said no rises in radiation levels were detected at the monitoring posts in the region.

Japan’s western coast was hit by an earthquake followed by a tsunami on Monday. Authorities say that while the natural disaster affected several nuclear power plants to some extent, there have been no signs of any “abnormalities” so far.

In March 2011, the country was battered by devastating tremors and gigantic waves that left 18,000 dead and caused meltdowns at the Fukushima nuclear power plant – the biggest such incident since the 1986 Chernobyl explosion in Soviet Ukraine.

The initial quake measured seven, the maximum intensity specified by the Japan Meteorological Agency’s Shindo seismic scale, which assesses the tremor’s severity at the surface.

Several aftershocks followed, with the agency issuing a tsunami warning for coastal Ishikawa, Niigata, Toyama and Yamagata prefectures.

Speaking to reporters, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida appealed to people living “in areas where tsunamis are expected,” saying “I would like to request that they evacuate as soon as possible.”

According to the national broadcaster NHK, waves in some areas may have reached a height of 5 meters.

Government spokesman Hayashi Yoshimasa said during an emergency press conference that authorities were evaluating the extent of the damage caused by the earthquake and warned people to be ready for further tremors.

Meanwhile, multiple video clips posted on social media depict cracks in roads, partly collapsed buildings and a fire.

Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority reported in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that the natural disaster has “caused damage to the Shiga Nuclear Power Plant in Shiga Town, Ishikawa Prefecture (maximum seismic intensity 7), and the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant in Kashiwazaki City and Kariwa Village, Niigata Prefecture (maximum seismic intensity 5+).”

Officials hastened to add, however, that no “abnormalities” have been detected, with the watchdog continuing to monitor all the nuclear power plants in the affected areas.

While some of these facilities were not in operation at the time of the earthquake, the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant was put back online last Wednesday for the first time since 2012.

South Korea’s meteorological agency has notified citizens that sea levels off its eastern coast could rise as well.

Authorities in the Russian island region of Sakhalin have also issued a tsunami alert

Gempa Sumedang - Tiga wilayah terdampak gempa cukup parah
