Google is exploring using artificial intelligence tools to write news articles and is in talks with news organizations to use the tools to assist journalists, a company spokesperson said late on Wednesday.
The spokesperson did not name the publishers, but the New York Times reported that Google has held discussions with the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal-owner News Corp (NWSA.O) and even the New York Times, among others.
These AI tools could assist journalists with options for headlines or different writing styles, for instance, in a way that "enhances their work and productivity," the Google spokesperson said, adding it was in the "earliest stages of exploring ideas".
"Quite simply these tools are not intended to, and cannot, replace the essential role journalists have in reporting, creating, and fact-checking their articles," the spokesperson said.
However, some executives who saw Google's pitch described it as unsettling, the NYT said, adding the executives asked not to be identified. The AI tool that was pitched is called Genesis internally at Google, the NYT said, citing people familiar with the matter.
Google is building an AI tool for journalists
A News Corp spokesperson declined to comment on the NYT report or the AI tool, but said, "We have an excellent relationship with Google, and we appreciate (Google CEO) Sundar Pichai's long-term commitment to journalism."
The NYT and Washington Post did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment outside regular working hours.
The news comes days after the Associated Press said it would partner with ChatGPT-owner OpenAI to explore the use of generative AI in news, a deal that could set the precedent for similar partnerships between the industries.
Some outlets are already using generative AI for their content, but news publications have been slow to adopt the tech over concerns about its tendency to generate factually incorrect information, as well as challenges in differentiating between content produced by humans and computer programs.
The new tool comes as tech companies, including Google, race to develop and deploy a new crop of generative AI features into applications used in the workplace, with the promise of streamlining tasks and making employees more productive.
But these tools, which are trained on information online, have also raised concerns because of their potential to get facts wrong or “hallucinate” responses.
News outlet CNET had to issue “substantial” corrections earlier this year after experimenting with using an AI tool to write stories. And what was supposed to be a simple AI-written story on “Star Wars” published by Gizmodo earlier this month similarly required a correction. But both outlets have said they will still move forward with using the technology.
Twitter Inc owner Elon Musk on Sunday signaled he would do more to take the social media company in a new direction with a rebranding that will replace its well known blue bird logo with an X after acknowledging advertisers have been slow to return.
The change, which was not evident on the website on Sunday afternoon, followed Musk's recent admission that advertising revenue remains nearly half of what it once was. And Twitter's cash flow has been negative as a result of that and its heavy debt load.
"Interim X logo goes live later today," Musk said on Twitter adding that "X.com" would now redirect to Twitter's website. Musk's X Corp owns Twitter.
The billionaire said in a Sunday post he wanted to change Twitter's logo and polled his millions of followers whether they would favor changing the site's color scheme from blue to black. He posted a picture of a stylized X against a black outer space-themed background.
"And soon we shall bid adieu to the twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds", he said. The company said it would be commenting on the changes later.
Under Musk's tumultuous tenure since he bought Twitter in October, the company has changed its business name to X Corp, reflecting the billionaire's vision to create a "super app" like China's WeChat.
In April, Twitter's legacy blue bird logo was temporarily replaced by Dogecoin's Shiba Inu dog, helping drive a surge in the cryptocurrency's market value.
The company came under widespread criticism from users and marketing professionals when Musk announced early this month that Twitter would limit how many tweets per day various accounts can read.
The daily limits helped Meta Platforms-owned (META.O) rival service Threads, which crossed 100 million sign-ups within five days of its July 5 launch.
NATO generals should have foreseen that the Ukrainian counteroffensive would fail, according to Larry Johnson, a veteran of the CIA and the State Department’s Office of Counterterrorism.
The Ukrainian counteroffensive is going "tough," with the nation's armed forces facing "a very hard fight" ahead, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken admitted on Sunday.
The US mainstream press laments the fact that Ukraine's "small territorial gains come at an outsize cost," citing multiple obstacles in the path of the Ukrainian campaign, including weary soldiers, shortage of ammo, and, above all, Russia's fortifications and minefields.
One US media outlet quoted a former US Special Forces engineer as saying that Russia's minefields are unlike anything he has ever seen and that battling these traps is "exhausting."
Appearing on a web podcast on July 22, Larry Johnson, a veteran of the CIA and former analyst at the State Department’s Office of Counterterrorism, said he is perplexed that Russia's fortification caught the West by surprise.
"I wonder was everybody asleep over the last six-seven months?" Johnson asked.
When Russia pulled out Kherson and pulled out Kharkov the last fall, it then publicly embarked on a plan of building a defensive line along the southern front, he recalled. Obviously, the Russians planted mines in front of their fortifications, according to him.
Per the CIA veteran, there is nothing new in Russia's tactics and NATO has enough reconnaissance and intelligence capabilities to monitor and see how Russia created those minefields. It was predictable that the Ukrainian Armed Forces would be stalled and trapped early in the counteroffensive effort, according to Johnson.
The former CIA analyst highlighted that he had earlier forecast that the Ukrainian counteroffensive would be doomed without aviation, self-propelled artillery, installations and air defense systems.
Ukraine's long-delayed counteroffensive kicked off on June 4. For five weeks, the Ukrainian military has been firing a great deal of shells and missiles and sending sappers to demine the fields in order to make some progress on the ground. However, they cannot boast of any successes, generating concerns in the West that the government of President Volodymyr Zelensky "may not deliver as powerful a blow as it could," according to the US media.
Since the beginning of the counteroffensive, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have lost over 26,000 troops, as well as 21 air planes, five helicopters, some 1,244 tanks and armored vehicles, including 17 Leopard tanks, five French AMX wheeled tanks, 914 units of special vehicles, two air defense systems, and 25 MLRS vehicles, as Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu stated earlier this month.
Meanwhile, Zelensky is claiming that the Ukrainian counteroffensive can get its second wind in the future, something which the US press appears to take with a grain of salt. Instead of writing about an imminent defeat of Russia in the NATO proxy war in Ukraine, the Western media are now admitting that the Russian military has created formidable fortifications, improved logistics, shipped fresh troops to the front lines, and employed drone technologies on a greater scale.
Kiev kicked off its counteroffensive on June 4 after being pumped up with heavy weapons by by the US and its NATO allies. A month-and-a-half on, Ukrainian forces have little to show for their operations apart from heavy losses in both troops and equipment.
The Ukrainian military has lost "more than" 26,000 troops in the course of its counteroffensive, President Putin has said.
"According to US estimates, the irretrievable losses of Ukraine's Armed Forces amount to 26,000 personnel," Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said during talks with Putin in St. Petersburg on Sunday.
"It's more. It's now more than that," Putin responded.
Putin also commented on the operations of foreign mercenaries fighting on Ukraine's side, saying they have been taking heavy losses due to their "stupidity."
"Members of the general public of the countries whose governments are sending people to the conflict zone today should also be aware of what is happening there. And we will bring this to the attention of the people so that they can evaluate the actions of their rulers," Putin added.
The Russian military estimated Saturday that nearly 5,000 foreign mercenaries had been killed fighting in Ukraine since the start of Russia's military operation last February, with over 4,900 fleeing the combat zone and leaving Ukraine.
Lukashenko said that according to his information, over 15 Leopard tanks and 20 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles had recently been destroyed all in the space of 24 hours.
Putin appeared to confirm these figures, saying that "so many foreign [pieces of armor] had never been destroyed in one day like this," and that Russian forces seem to have struck units equipped entirely with foreign equipment.
"(You're) forced to wage a war against the entire NATO bloc," Lukashenko chimed in. "We can only guess how many soldiers from the Ukrainian Army died there, when so much equipment was destroyed. I know about this because I served as an officer on armored equipment in my own time. So I know what it means to destroy so many armored vehicles, and, most importantly, these vaunted Leopards," he said.
Polish Plans for Western Ukraine
"There's been a lot of talk recently about bringing Ukraine into NATO 'piece by piece'. What is behind this? It's all just a smoke screen. Behind this is the goal of tearing off the western piece of Ukraine under the guise of being accepted into NATO, so that the population approves it; they want to chop off western Ukraine and have Poland annex it. That's the price for the Poles' active participation in this operation against Russian forces. The Americans support it," Lukashenko said.
Minsk and Moscow would oppose such a scenario, and be ready to assist the population of western Ukraine resist Polish annexation, Lukashenko added.
"They are actively recruiting mercenaries. I brought you a map specially on the transfer of the armed forces of Poland to the borders of the Union State," Lukashenko said, referencing the Russian-Belarusian supranational union. "We see that they are preparing the groundwork," the Belarusian leader added, pointing to the deployment of Polish forces near Brest and Grodno in western Belarus, and the activation of the Rzeszow Air Base, where US forces are moving their equipment.
Lukashenko conveyed gratitude to Putin for its support in case of foreign aggression against Belarus. "We are taking this into account when building our armed forces."
Economy
Putin and Lukashenko also discussed other matters during their meeting, including economic affairs.
"All our plans are being implemented, and at an even better pace than we expected. I would also like to point out the great state of the economies of both Russia and Belarus," Putin said, pointing to projections of Russian GDP growing by over 2 percent, and Belarusian GDP by 3.75 percent. "At any rate, Russia and Belarus will go through this year calmly and with confidence," he said.
"We are fully and completely implementing all the plans related to the construction of the Union State, we are moving confidently in this direction. Trade is growing, it is estimated slightly differently at different currencies. According to our data, if we talk in dollar equivalent, it is $43.7 billion, while according to Belarusian statistics it is almost $45 billion. This is a very good indicator," Putin said.
Lukashenko proposed the creation some kind of joint Russian-Belarusian economic plan based on self-reliance and independence. "We have the brains. We have more than enough resources. And we need to create a plan for the development of our fatherland. Like I say -two states, one fatherland. We can do it. But the main forces here are concentrated in Russia...If our governments could come up with such a plan, it would be good," he said.
Tapi, dibicarakan dulu," tegasnya.
