Ukraine launched its much-touted counteroffensive in early June. Ukrainian President Zelensky admitted that progress was "slower than desired." The Russian Defense Ministry said that Ukrainian troops had been trying — but failing — to advance in the South Donetsk, Artemovsk (Bakhmut) and Zaporozhye sectors.

"Since the start of the so-called 'offensive,' the Ukrainian armed forces lost over 43,000 soldiers in June-July. This number does not include the injured, who were evacuated to hospitals in Ukraine and abroad, foreign mercenaries as well as the soldiers that were neutralized in long-range high-precision strikes in rear areas," the ministry stated.

Kiev has also lost 76 US-made M777 artillery systems, 84 self-propelled artillery systems from Western countries over the two months of its counteroffensive operation, it added.

As many as 4,900 units of different military equipment have been destroyed on the line of contact since the start of Ukraine's counteroffensive, including 1,800 tanks and armored combat vehicles, the ministry also stated.

Russian forces repelled 8 Ukrainian attacks conducted a counterattack and took more advantageous positions near Donetsk direction, the ministry said.

The Kiev regime has lost over 1,800 tanks and armored combat vehicles on the frontline, including 25 Leopards during its counteroffensive, the ministry stressed.

"The total losses of the enemy in this direction amounted to 185 Ukrainian servicemen, two armored combat vehicles, two pickup trucks, four cars, a Polish-made Krab self-propelled artillery mount, and a D-20 howitzer," the ministry said in a statement, adding that Russian forces took better positions following a counterattack.

The ministry mentioned that the Ukrainian military continued to make attempts to attack in Donetsk, South Donetsk, Kupyansk and Krasny Liman direction. According to the Russian side, Ukraine lost 130 soldiers in the Zaporozhye direction, 120 soldiers in the South Donetsk direction and 70 soldiers in the Krasny Liman direction in the past 24 hours.

"In the Kupyansk direction, the assault detachments of (Russia’s) Western grouping of forces continue offensive operations on a broad front and have taken more advantageous positions in the areas of the settlements of Olshana, Petropavlovka and Tokarovka in the Kharkov region," the ministry said.

Watch Russian Su-25 Aircraft Destroy Ukrainian Mortar Units

Two Su-25SM attack aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces wiped out Ukrainian mortar positions near Krasny Liman. Protected by heavy armor, the jets are resistant to ground fire, while capable of carrying various weapons from bombs to a 30mm cannon.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense has published a video of a pair of Su-25SM "Grach" launching a missile strike at an altitude of only around 25 meters and a velocity of 800/h using 80mm and 122mm caliber missiles.

The Sukhoi attack jets have been successfully performing tasks since the beginning of the special operation. Designed to support infantry and destroy ground targets, the Su-25 have been instrumental in annihilating Ukrainian troops and armored vehicles.

Kiev's much-touted counteroffensive effort was launched in early June after several delays. Zelensky’s partners in the West have been voicing concerns over the negative results of the Ukrainian efforts, pointing out severe losses among servicemen and the NATO-supplied military equipment.

Russian military unimpressed by captured Swedish armor

The Russian military has expressed scepticism over the capabilities of a Swedish CV90 tracked armored vehicle, captured by soldiers during the conflict with Ukraine.

The dismissive comments can be heard in a video which the Defense Ministry released on Friday to report a visit by ministry chief, Sergey Shoigu, to a command post involved in the Ukrainian operation. Commander Andrey Mordvichev showed the trophy to the visiting official.

Mordvichev noted that the Swedish-made vehicle, which has been in service since 1993, resembles a tank. However, the one captured by the Russian troops was defeated by a “simple and cheap” RPG-7, a shoulder-fired rocket-propelled grenade launcher that has been in use since the 1960s.

“The vehicle was stopped with the tool of our grandfathers,” the commander said.

The donated armor also lacked spare parts and tools for field repair, but did have a kit to indicate an emergency stop, Mordvichev told the minister.

The CV90 is quite tall, making it a relatively easy target, and its main weapon has a relatively low rate of fire because of its reloading mechanism, according to the Russian military.

The vehicle captured by the Russian troops appears to be armed with the Bofors 40/70 autocannon. It fires 40mm cartridges, which are fed through a magazine that has three separate compartments for three different ammunition types, with total capacity of 24 rounds. The magazine is loaded manually.

Mordvichev confirmed that the CV90 had several types of cartridges on board, but said their overall number was low.

The Russian capture of Swedish armor was reported in late July, marking the first time this particular weapon platform had been seized during the Ukraine conflict. Its driver and gunner were killed, the commander said during the tour.

Trump pleads not guilty to charges he tried to overturn election loss

Trump pleads not guilty to charges he tried to overturn election loss

Former U.S. President Donald Trump, who is to appear in a federal court facing federal charges related to attempts to overturn his 2020 election defeat, waves as he arrives in this still image taken from video at Reagan Washington National Airport in nearby Arlington, Virginia, U.S., August 3, 2023. Donald Trump pleaded not guilty on Thursday to federal charges that he orchestrated a plot to try to overturn his 2020 election loss in what U.S. prosecutors call an unprecedented effort by the then-president to undermine the pillars of American democracy.

Special Counsel Jack Smith, who has overseen the investigation, looked on from the front row as Trump entered his plea before U.S. Magistrate Judge Moxila Upadhyaya.

"Not guilty," Trump said, emphasizing the first word.

The arraignment, lasting about half an hour, took place just half a mile (1 km) from the U.S. Capitol, the building Trump's supporters stormed on Jan. 6, 2021, to try to stop Congress from certifying his defeat.

The plea - the third for Trump in four months - kicks off months of pretrial legal wrangling that will unfold against the backdrop of the 2024 presidential campaign, in which Trump is the front-runner for the Republican nomination to take on Democratic President Joe Biden.

In a 45-page indictment on Tuesday, Smith accused Trump and his allies of promoting false claims the election was rigged, pressuring state and federal officials to alter the results and assembling fake slates of electors to try to wrest electoral votes from Biden.

Trump, 77, faces four counts, including conspiracy to defraud the U.S., to deprive citizens of their right to have their votes counted and to obstruct an official proceeding. The most serious charge carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years.

When the court deputy read aloud the name of the case - "United States of America v. Donald J. Trump" - the former president shook his head in disapproval.

The next court date in the case will be Aug. 28 before U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, though Upadhyaya said Trump would not be required to attend. Aug. 28 is five days after the first scheduled Republican primary debate. Trump has yet to say whether he will take part.

Chutkan intends to set a trial date at that time, Upadhyaya said. Trump's lawyer, John Lauro, registered an early objection, arguing that the magnitude of the case and the amount of materials involved could require a lot of time.

"What we desire utmost is the opportunity to fairly defend President Trump in this matter," he said.

Prosecutor Thomas Windom countered that the case should proceed as normal, including with a speedy trial.

Trump was released without travel restrictions. One of his conditions of release is that he not discuss the case with any witnesses unless accompanied by his lawyers.

Trump has portrayed the indictment, as well as the other criminal cases against him, as a "witch hunt" intended to derail his White House campaign. In a series of social media posts since Tuesday, he has accused the Biden administration of targeting him for political gain.

He previously pleaded not guilty to federal charges that he retained classified documents after leaving office and New York state charges that he falsified documents in connection with hush money payments to a porn star.

Trump may soon face more charges in Georgia, where a state prosecutor is investigating his attempts to overturn the election there. The Atlanta-area prosecutor, Fani Willis, has said she will file indictments by mid-August.

"I NEED ONE MORE INDICTMENT TO ENSURE MY ELECTION!" Trump wrote on his Truth Social media platform ahead of his Thursday court appearance.

TRUMP RETAINS POLLING LEAD

About half of Republicans said they would not vote for Trump if he were convicted of a felony, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll, underscoring the potential risks his legal entanglements pose for his candidacy.

But the same poll, taken after Tuesday's indictment, also demonstrated his remarkable resiliency in the Republican primary race. He earned the support of 47% of Republicans, extending his lead over second-place Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, at 13%.

Three-quarters of Republicans said they agreed that the charges were "politically motivated," showing that Trump's claim that he is the victim of political persecution resonates with his base.

The vast majority of Republican leaders, including several competing with Trump for the White House, have either defended him or offered muted criticism, instead accusing the Biden administration of weaponizing the Justice Department against a campaign foe.

Many of the allegations in Tuesday's indictment had been well-documented in media reports and the investigation conducted by a U.S. House of Representatives select committee.

But the indictment featured some details that were not widely known, including several based on grand jury testimony and contemporaneous notes from former Vice President Mike Pence, who is also running for the Republican presidential nomination.

The indictment describes a phone call in which Pence told Trump there was no legal basis for the theory that Pence could block certification of the election.

"You're too honest," Trump responded, according to prosecutors.

Although Pence repeatedly told Trump he lacked the authority to reject electoral votes from certain states, Trump kept repeating the claim.

On Jan. 6, as he spoke to his supporters before they attacked the Capitol, Trump said: "If Mike Pence does the right thing, we win the election." Some rioters at the Capitol later chanted, "Hang Mike Pence!"

Far from deterred by the violence, Trump and his associates kept calling Republican members of Congress hours after the riot had ended, still intent on blocking certification, the indictment said.

Pence was one of the few prominent Republicans to criticize Trump on Tuesday, saying that "anyone who puts himself over the Constitution should never be president."

2nd Supermoon of the Year Illuminates the Night Sky Around the World

On Tuesday night, the Sturgeon Moon was visible from Greece to Brazil. Two more supermoons are expected this year: one in late August and the other in September

The second supermoon of this year, the Sturgeon Moon — left stargazers awed on Tuesday night, drawing large crowds in parts of Europe, the Americas and Asia, and once again piquing interest in the night sky.

August's full moon, the Sturgeon Moon, rose around 9:30 p.m. EDT (0130 GMT on Aug. 2) and set at 5:11 a.m. EDT (0911 GMT) on Aug. 2 according to In the Sky.

The Sturgeon supermoon will be followed by the blue supermoon on Aug. 30. It is called a 'blue moon' as it will be the second full moon in a calendar month

“It’s nice that people get away from their daily routines and all the horrible things that are going around in the world, and then take some time to really appreciate this celestial phenomenon,” Francisco Diego, an astronomer who lectures at University College London, said by telephone on Wednesday.

The Sturgeon Moon, according to a 1930s edition of the Maine Farmers’ Almanac, received its name from the Algonquin people for the large fish that is particularly abundant in the Great Lakes at this time of year.

Images of the supermoon flooded social media on Tuesday night, with many people capturing its golden, amber and eventually silver tones as it rose over Cape Sounion, Greece; Madrid; New York; and Rio de Janeiro — all cities lucky enough not to have obstructed views because of clouds or inclement weather.

A supermoon occurs when the moon is at perigee — its closest point to Earth in its orbit — making it look bigger and brighter than other full moons. The word was coined in 1979 by Richard Nolle, the astrologer, although it is not an official astronomical term.

In London and other parts of Britain, cloud cover on Tuesday night prevented many from seeing the supermoon in all of its splendor. But Mr. Diego said that onlookers might get a second chance on Wednesday night, and that the moon would still appear quite round and large.

It will not be a complete full moon, he said, adding that a small sliver would be darkened on its right side, “but it’s still quite spectacular to see.”

Tuesday night’s celestial show was the second supermoon of the year. The first occurred in early July, drawing people outdoors in major cities like Istanbul and Los Angeles.

The next supermoon will be on Aug. 30, and because it is the second full moon this month, it will be known as a Blue Moon. It will also be the closest and brightest full supermoon of the year, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. Plus, Saturn will appear five degrees to the upper right of that moon and will swing clockwise around it through the evening, according to NASA.

The fourth and final supermoon of the year, which will appear in September, is sometimes called a Harvest Moon.

Mr. Diego said it was “more or less rare” to have four supermoons in a three-month period.

Photographers from all over the world caught the sturgeon supermoon in all of its splendor last night. Earth's satellite appeared bigger and brighter because its orbit brought it a little closer to home.

But if you missed the show, no worries. Last night's lunar event was the first of two supermoons taking place this month. The next will be a rare blue supermoon, on Aug. 30.

In the meantime, enjoy these pictures from across the globe.

The Russian forces have engaged in counterattacks in the Donetsk direction where the Ukrainian military lost up to 380 soldiers in the past 24 hours, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Thursday.

The Ukrainian forces continued to make attempts to attack in Donetsk, South Donetsk, Kupyansk and Krasny Lyman directions, the ministry mentioned. In the Donetsk direction, Russia repelled eight Ukrainian attacks.

"After repelling the attacks, Russian troops counterattacked the retreating enemy and improved the position along the front line in the areas of the settlements of Berestovoe, Krasnogorovka and Marinka of the Donetsk People's Republic. During the past day, the enemy’s losses amounted to 380 Ukrainian servicemen, one tank, five armored combat vehicles, four vehicles, two Polish-made Krab self-propelled artillery mounts, as well as the Rapira anti-tank gun," the ministry said in a statement, adding that Kiev lost up to 175 soldiers, one tank and two M777 howitzers in the South Donetsk direction.

According to the ministry, the Ukrainian military lost up to 110 soldiers in the Krasny Lyman direction and up to 150 soldiers in the Kupyansk direction.

"In the Kupyansk direction, the assault detachments of [Russia’s] western grouping of forces carried out offensive operations on a wide front and took up more advantageous positions in the areas of the settlements of Olshanskoe, Pershotravnevoe in Kharkov Region and Kuzemevka in the Lugansk People’s Republic," the ministry said.

Russian Air Defense Forces Shoot Down 6 Drones in Kaluga Region

Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that Ukraine tried to attack facilities in Moscow and the Moscow Region with three drones, two were destroyed by air defenses over the Odintsovo and Naro-Fominsk districts, one was suppressed by electronic warfare systems and crashed into a tower of the Moscow-City business center.

Russian air defense has foiled an attempted terrorist attack by the Kiev regime in the Kaluga region, destroying six drones, the Russian Defense Ministry said Thursday.

"Overnight, an attempt by the Kiev regime to conduct a terrorist attack using unmanned aerial vehicles was thwarted over the Kaluga Region. Air defense forces destroyed six drones," the ministry said, adding that there were no casualties or damage as a result of the thwarted attack. It added that "there were no casualties or damage as a result of the foiled terrorist attack".

Earlier in the day, the governor of the Kaluga Region, Vladislav Shapsha, said that six drones had been shot down, while flying over the Kaluga Region overnight, with no casualties or damage reported.
