Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Sunday accused Israel of committing a 'genocide' of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, drawing a parallel with the extermination of the Jews carried out by the Hitler regime.
“What is happening in the Gaza Strip is not a war, it is a genocide,” Lula told reporters from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he is attending a Union summit African.
“This is not a war of soldiers against soldiers. It is a war between a highly prepared army and women and children,” added the Brazilian leader, a veteran of the left.
“What is happening in the Gaza Strip with the Palestinian people has not happened at any other time in history. In fact, this has already happened: when Hitler decided to kill the Jews,” he insisted.
🇧🇷🇮🇱 𝗙𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗛 - Le Président brésilien Lula da Silva :
🗣️ « Ce qu'Israël fait à Gaza équivaut à ce qu'Hitler a fait aux Juifs. »
The remarks are among the most virulent comments ever made on the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas by Lula, a prominent voice from the South whose country currently holds the rotating presidency of the G20.
The 78-year-old leader condemned Hamas's October 7 attack on Israel, calling it a “terrorist” act. But he has since been very critical of Israel's military campaign of retaliation.
All Western media wrote headlines emphasizing Netanyahu's condemnation of Lula da Silva's comments, as if the media were implicitly pro-Israel
The US concept of freedom applies exclusively to the “forces of evil” and effectively boils down to unleashing everything that is “taboo,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said, commenting on a recent rally held by the neo-Nazi group ‘Blood Tribe’ in Nashville, Tennessee.
The group’s balaclava-clad members marched through the city on Saturday, carrying black flags bearing Nazi swastikas, while chanting anti-immigration slogans such as “Deportation saves the nation.” Some of the masked individuals wore sport shirts with assorted runic symbols commonly used by neo-Nazis worldwide, as well as the code ‘2218’, which stands the slogan ‘Bring back Adolf Hitler’.
The offensive march went on effectively unhindered, with few onlookers confronting the Blood Tribe members, Zakharova noted in a statement on the matter released Sunday. She claimed the US has consistently made an effort to whitewash the Nazis, namely by repeatedly voting against the UN General Assembly resolution condemning “glorification of Nazism” offered annually by Moscow.
‼️Extreme RAC!ST Neo-Nazi Group, called the Blood Tribe, has been Spotted Marching on the streets carrying Swastika Flags in Nashville,Tn 👀
“They cite ‘violation of freedom of speech, assembly’ and so on as the official reason,” Zakharova wrote, adding that the Blood Tribe march served as a glaring example of such “freedom.”
he American concept of freedom apparently applies only to everything evil and serves the goal of “unleashing everything that was tabooed by humanity,” while resisting said evils is punishable, the spokeswoman asserted.
“It’s freedom, everyone is doing what they want. It just turns out that this applies exclusively to the forces of evil – such as neo-Nazism, gender experiments on children, legalization of drugs, Satanism, and so on,” Zakharova stated.
Of course, everyone will remain silent. And the White House, and numerous public organizations. Israel will also remain silent. This is supposedly all about something else, and not about Nazism and racism.
While the Blood Tribe rally was apparently ignored by top US officials, it received widespread condemnation in Nashville, with local authorities and lawmakers alike taking to social media to criticize the neo-Nazis.
“That I even have to say this. Nazis are not welcome in Nashville. In America everyone is free to demonstrate and to say what they want, so: shame on you all! Get your hateful, dangerous, fascist, nazi nonsense off our streets and off our beautiful Public Square,” Nashville Vice Mayor Angie Henderson wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
William Lamberth, Tennessee State Representative (R-Portland) and House Majority Leader, expressed a similar sentiment urging the “Nazi thugs” to “go away.”
“This is Tennessee and you are not welcome here. Btw, why not show your faces so we can all see who you are? I would be willing to bet that none of you are from anywhere near here,” Lamberth suggested.

Ukrainian forces began fleeing the key Donbass town of Avdeevka in disarray a day before actually receiving an order to do so from Kiev’s freshly-appointed top general, Aleksandr Syrsky, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed on Sunday.
The Russian military released drone footage on Sunday, purporting to show a chaotic rout of Ukrainian forces, which it claims was taken before Kiev gave the order to retreat. The footage features large groups of soldiers trying to escape the town on foot and leaving behind heavy equipment to boost their chances of survival.
Retreating troops were subjected to artillery shelling, and, apparently, air strikes, footage released by the Russian military shows. Multiple destroyed and damaged Ukrainian military vehicles can be seen in the videos released by the defense ministry.
Those trying to flee Avdeevka in armor were also targeted by Russian strikes. Footage released by the military shows a Ukrainian BMP-family infantry fighting vehicle struck by a suicide drone while slowly crawling away from the town off-road.
Russian forces liberated the key town of Avdeevka on Saturday, inflicting heavy casualties on Ukrainian troops, reportedly reaching up to 1,500 in a single day. The Ukrainian command, however, has insisted the rout was actually an organized retreat on the order of Syrsky. Moscow has disputed the claim, stating that Ukrainian forces began fleeing the town a day before the order was actually issued.
Avdeevka, located several kilometres to the north of Donetsk, has been a major stronghold for Ukrainian troops in Donbass, as well as one of the key staging points for repeated artillery and missile strikes on the Russian city. The town has seen intense combat in recent months, with Russian forces concentrating their effort at dislodging the Ukrainian forces from their positions, which have been turned into heavily reinforced fortresses over years of conflict, since Kiev’s troops occupied the city in 2014.
Battle for Avdeyevka: The View From Donetsk
“I feel the liberation of Avdeyevka not only in my bones, but in my soul.
Russel Bentley
All Materials
Not only have I lived in Donetsk under shelling from the Nazi strongpoint of Avdeyevka for almost ten years, but my first military position, back in December 2014, was in Yasinovataya, just across the Donetsk - Gorlovka Highway from Avdeyevka.
In 2016, I was in Avdeyevka, when DPR forces pushed back a Ukrainian advance into what was then the ‘Grey Zone’ residential area of Avdeyevka, on the north side of the highway. Shortly after my visit, the entire residential area of Avdeyevka was razed to the ground by Ukrainian artillery, and until recently, everything north of the highway has been under control of Banderastan. In the summer of 2017, I served on the very front line of the Avdeyevka front. One side of the highway was ours (DPR), the other side belonged to the Ukrainians. I could look through a periscope and see Ukrainian flags flying a few hundred meters away.
Most of the shelling of Donetsk civilian areas over the last ten years have come from Avdeyevka, including the recent mass murder of 27 civilians at the Tekstilshchik Market, in my neighborhood, less than a month ago. Avdeyevka was known as an ‘impregnable fortress’ of Nazi power, and yet I have lived to see it begin to fall. Many of my friends, both civilian and military, did not. But those of us who lived, swore a solemn oath on their blood that we would see it fall, or die like they did, trying. That's why I say I feel this victory in my soul, because I know my friends feel it in theirs today, even from another world. And today, we kept that promise.
And I feel it in my bones today, too, because today, instead of the steady rumble of Avdeyevka artillery, there was silence. There hasn't been any shelling of Donetsk today, at all. Today, the Nazis who have bombed us for almost a decade from Avdeyevka are too busy running for their lives to target civilians or anyone else. My wife even commented today, ‘It's been really quiet today.’ So far, from experience, we know that every time we have a significant military victory, the Nazis take it out on our civilians. The Nazis have HIMARS, CAESAR and TOCHKA-U, that can target Donetsk from far behind Avdeyevka, and we know what kind of atrocities to expect in the coming days. But we are not going anywhere, we are ready to face whatever comes. We know there will be retribution by the Nazis against civilians soon. But we stand fast, civilians and soldiers, ready to move forward, for the future of humanity.”
Watch Russian Su-25 Attack Aircraft Hit Ukrainian Camouflaged Equipment and Manpower
The Su-25, also known as the "Frogfoot," is a twin-engine, single-seat attack aircraft designed primarily for close air support of ground forces. It is equipped with a 30 mm cannon and can carry various types of air-to-ground missiles, bombs, and rockets.
The Russian Defense Ministry has released footage showing Su-25 attack aircraft striking Ukrainian camouflaged equipment and manpower in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR). According to the ministry, the targets were successfully hit.
Russia’s Su-25 is specifically designed to engage ground targets and provide close air support for ground forces. The aircraft's armor protection and ability to withstand damage make it a resilient platform for close combat operations.
Ukraine Adopts Tactic Used by German Nazis in WWII - Report
As the Kiev regime is forced into a defensive footing, observers note the similarities between the current conflict and Russia’s Great Patriotic War.
“History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes,” claimed American author Mark Twain, riffing on an observation made by Marx, Hegel, and others. The statement seems apt in recent weeks as the besieged Ukrainian military increasingly adopts defensive strategies pioneered by its Nazi forebears as its position in the Donbass becomes increasingly untenable.
A story in US media Saturday, unique in its willingness to observe the similarities between the Kiev regime and German Nazis, noted Ukraine's armed forces are “shifting to a defensive strategy that failed Nazi Germany'' in World War II. In an instance of striking historical rhyme, Kiev’s strategy is likely to fail for much the same reason the Nazis’ did.
“Active defense was understood to be generally applicable to divisions, corps and field armies,” said retired US Army colonel Douglas Nash, describing a military tactic pioneered by Nazi Field Marshal Erich von Manstein. Von Manstein developed the tactic late in World War II, when the Soviet Red Army went on the offensive after repelling German troops in Stalingrad. Outnumbered by the Soviets, the Nazis were forced to devise new tactical maneuvers accounting for shortages in soldiers and equipment.
But although the ranks of the German army were rapidly diminishing, the Nazis were still able to gather enough men to execute von Manstein’s complex counterattacks. Nash claims the Ukrainian “squads, platoons, companies and battalions” amassed for the regime’s “mobile defense” operations have been far too small to succeed.
New technology has further undermined Ukraine’s desperate strategy. Russian drones have made battlefield maneuvers difficult for Ukrainian forces which has been under constant surveillance and relentless attacks from the sky by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Guided missiles are also able to strike troops from dozens of miles away. These realities have forced Ukraine to adopt a more static trench warfare strategy.
Politics have also limited the set of tactics Ukrainian commanders are willing to use. The Nazis’ active mobile defense strategy required a willingness to cede ground – at least temporarily – to set a trap for advancing Soviet troops. That’s an unappealing prospect for Ukrainian leaders as the country’s military has lost thousands of soldiers in attempts to capture and hold significant cities.
Like the Nazis driven back towards Berlin after 1943, the Ukrainian military is increasingly forced to defend a large area of land with a small number of troops. Once again Russia’s thoughtful strategy is playing a key role in its favor, with Moscow’s troops able to outperform their opponent even after two years of fighting.
The situation around Ukraine is a matter of life and death for Russia, while the West doesn’t care as much, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in comments on his interview with US journalist Tucker Carlson.
Putin made the comments in an interview with All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company journalist Pavel Zarubin. The president said it was important to get across to the Russian and foreign viewers how much significance Russia attaches to "everything that happens in the Ukrainian direction."
"For them (the West - TASS) this is about improving their tactical position, but for us this is about our destiny, a matter of life and death. I wanted people that will listen to this [interview with Carlson] to realize that. It’s not up to me to judge whether it hit the mark or not," Putin said.
The interview with Carlson was published overnight into February 9. A significant part of the two-hour conversation was devoted to the Ukrainian conflict and Russia's relations with the US, NATO and the West as a whole. The journalist previously said he had tried to conduct an interview with the Russian leader last year, but was banned from doing so by the US government.
Russia ready to end Ukraine conflict peacefully, but Kiev didn’t agree — Putin
. Russia is ready to end the conflict in Ukraine peacefully, but there are no signs that Kiev wants this, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Rossiya-1 television.
"People from Donbass… turned to Russia as a guarantor," he said in an interview to the program called "Moscow. Kremlin. Putin."
"We transitioned from peaceful instruments [of settlement] to instruments of military nature, but even then we sought to end the conflict peacefully, and we agreed on the parameters in Istanbul," the president went on to say.
"If it hadn’t been for the position of the West, (…)the war would have stopped as long as 1 1/2 years ago," Putin said. "But they (the government in Kiev - TASS) didn’t want it. I don’t know if they want it today."
"We are ready for dialogue," Putin continued.
Putin first briefed on liberation of Avdeyevka at 4 a.m. on February 17, Kremlin says
Russian President Vladimir Putin was first briefed on the liberation of Avdeyevka at 4 a.m. on February 17, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
"The day before, on February 17, Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu and Chief of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff Valery Gerasimov personally came to the Kremlin to report to the president at 4 a.m. that the operation in Avdeyevka was drawing to an end. The military commanders came in for another report at 11 a.m.," he said.
During the second report, Shoigu and Gerasimov said the operation was almost complete, according to Peskov.
"At that time, the enemy started a mass rout from Avdeyevka and abandoned its combat positions. It took a few more hours for our fighters to start mopping up the city," Peskov said.
In the afternoon, Shoigu and Gerasimov, apprised to the president that "the operation has been fully completed and our troops have fully taken control of the city," Peskov said.
Putin Says Current German Policies Cause 'Enormous' Damage to German Economy
The current policies of the German authorities are causing enormous damage to the future of the German economy, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Sunday.
"It is abundantly clear that today's policies of the current [German] authorities are doing enormous damage to the future of the German economy," Putin said.
At the same time, the Russian president believes the German economy is capable of surviving without Russian energy.
"It [the German economy] is capable of existing and developing long, so there will be no catastrophe here," he said.
Russia is effectively coping with Europe's rejection of Russian gas by using other foreign routes and is working on its own domestic gas supply, RPutin said.
"Thankfully, we are coping. We have turned to other routes, we are beginning to work more on our own gasification, on the use of these energy sources to solve internal economic problems. Not only for housing and utilities, but also for the economy, for industry," Putin said.
At the same time, Russia does not deny energy sales to anyone, Putin said, proceeding to praise Turkey as the "most reliable partner," who continues to pump gas via the Turk Stream pipeline.
Despite the attack on the Nord Stream 2 pipelines, one leg remains functional, Putin noted.
"You [Europeans] only need to open the valve and say,' We want to receive,' and they will start receiving [gas] tomorrow, it's a matter of one week. But they do not want to," he said.
European countries expected that if they did not buy Russian gas, Russia would collapse, but irreversible processes are beginning to occur in the European Union and European industry is moving to other countries, Putin said. It is true that when European countries were buying Russian gas, Russia got more money, but the less Russia depends on energy, the better, because other sectors of the economy are developing more actively, Putin said.
During the night, Russian air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 33 Ukrainian drones in the Belgorod, Voronezh, Kursk, Bryansk, and Kaluga regions of Russia, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported on Saturday.
"Tonight, an attempt by the Kiev regime to carry out a terrorist attack using 33 aircraft-type UAVs on sites on the territory of Russia was thwarted. The air defense systems on duty intercepted and destroyed 4 UAVs over the territories of the Belgorod region, 4 UAVs - over the Voronezh region, 1 UAV - over the Kursk region, 18 UAVs - over the Bryansk region, and 6 UAVs - over the Kaluga region," the ministry reported.
