Saudi Arabia and Indonesia Lobby EU to Halt Russian Asset Confiscation

Saudi Arabia and Indonesia Lobby EU to Halt Russian Asset Confiscation

Saudi Arabia and Indonesia Lobby EU to Halt Russian Asset Confiscation

Saudi Arabia and Indonesia are trying to persuade EU countries to abandon the confiscation of Russian assets.

The countries have been lobbying EU capitals not to seize the assets, fearing for the future of their own reserves held in the West, the Financial Times reports, citing officials.

While the US and Canada continue to push for the confiscation of Russian assets, the EU "remains highly cautious, resulting in a stalemate," the outlet said.

Confiscating Russian assets could trigger a wave of reparations claims stemming from long-standing disputes, such as those against Germany after the two world wars, as well as former colonies making claims against former imperialist powers, the FT noted, citing EU officials.

"Moving from freezing the assets, to confiscating them, to disposing of them [could carry the risk of] breaking the international order that you want to protect," European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said.

While Ukraine insists on the complete seizure of Russia's assets, G7 officials privately declare that such a step is "no longer on the table." The Russian Foreign Ministry has called the freezing of Russian assets theft, noting that such an attempt violates international law.

According to Politico, several countries sympathetic to Russia, including China, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia, are pressuring the EU behind closed doors to drop the idea of confiscating Russia’s frozen assets.

By doing so, these countries are pushing the EU to continue resisting pressure from the US and U.K. to seize more than €200 billion of Russian state assets, which the EU immobilized after February 2022’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

According to sources close to Politico, China, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia are skeptical of the idea.

The concern is, “this would create a precedent” ― in other words, these countries would fear they could be next to lose out.

For the time being, the idea of confiscating Russian assets will not be implemented, as particularly Western EU countries are refusing to give in on the matter, for fear of any legal ramifications and possible destabilization within the eurozone.

In addition, there is a fear that taking such a step would decrease trust in Western financial institutions, as reported by The Guardian. Additionally, there are concerns in some quarters that Moscow might retaliate against European business interests in Russia.

The clash over whether to commandeer Russia’s frozen assets

At the recent gathering of G20 finance ministers in Brazil, delegates were gripped by a deep sense of unease over a pressing issue: the potential seizure or use of Russian assets frozen under the western sanctions that followed its The Russia's Special Military Operation in Ukraine.

Two ministers — Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed al-Jadaan and Indonesia’s Sri Mulyani Indrawati — were among those particularly alarmed by the idea. Were G7 countries seriously preparing to do this? And had they considered the full implications of such a drastic step?

Their questions to their western counterparts cut to the heart of a fraught debate over whether hundreds of billions of euros in frozen Russian central bank assets should be mobilised to help fund Ukraine as the conflict there drags into a third year.

Doing so would deliver a financial boost with the potential to turn the war in Kyiv’s favour, argue those in support, led by the US. For opponents of the idea, such a move risks setting a dangerous precedent in international law — one that could endanger not only the interests of any country that falls out with western capitals, but also the international legal order itself.

For now, Kyiv is relying on the $61bn package of military aid approved by the US Senate on April 24 following months of political wrangling. But US President Joe Biden is pressing his allies to seek ways of tapping into the roughly €260bn of Russian reserves, with the G7 leaders’ summit in Italy next month seen as a key moment to push for progress.

“We immobilised the assets together; we would like to mobilise them together as well,” says Daleep Singh, White House deputy national security adviser for international economics.

Russia's ability to mete out like-for-like retaliation if Western leaders seize its frozen assets has been eroded by dwindling foreign investment, but officials and economists say there are still ways it can strike back.

The United States wants to seize immobilised Russian reserves - around $300 billion globally - and hand them to Ukraine, while EU leaders favour ringfencing profits from the assets, estimating they will total 15-20 billion euros by 2027.

Much of that money is centrally held, meaning it is accessible if the West decides to go after it.

Russia says any attempt to take its capital or interest would be "banditry" and has warned of catastrophic consequences, although it has been vague about exactly how it might respond.

Former President Dmitry Medvedev on Saturday acknowledged that Russia did not have enough U.S. state property to retaliate symmetrically and would have to go after private investors' cash instead - a step he said would be no less painful.

Russia does not disclose how much is in the accounts, held by the country's National Settlement Depository, a sanctioned entity. Russian officials have said the amount is comparable to the $300 billion of Russian reserves frozen.

"Payouts on blocked assets in type-C accounts could start to be seized in favour of the state," said Vladimir Yazev, investment portfolio manager at investment firm Aigenis.

Western hardware trophy show opens in Moscow - Videos/Photos

An exhibition featuring dozens of Western tanks and armored vehicles captured during the Ukraine conflict has opened in Moscow. The trophy show also includes a newly arrived US-made M1 Abrams tank which was knocked out not far from the Donbass town of Avdeevka.

The display kicked off on Wednesday near the Victory Museum, which is dedicated to World War II and the Soviet triumph over Nazi Germany in 1945. The exhibition, which will run throughout May, is also opening ahead of Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War, one of Russia’s most important holidays, which is celebrated on May 9.

The Russian Defense Ministry said that the exhibition would also include a US-made Abrams tank and M1150 Assault Breacher Vehicle. The latter specializes in mine-clearing operations and is also based on the Abrams tank.

Both vehicles were captured by Russian troops during their offensive near the settlement of Berdychi, not far from the Donbass town of Avdeevka, officials said. Earlier this week, the ministry shared clips of the Abrams tank burning after being hit by two anti-tank guided missiles.

The Defense Ministry noted that in addition, the exhibition also features 32 other trophy vehicles, including a German-made Leopard 2A6 tank and Marder infantry fighting vehicle (IFV), US-made Bradley IFV, UK-made AT105 Saxon and Husky TSV armored vehicles, as well as many others.

The exhibition also has many types of NATO-made small arms and engineering equipment on display, plus Ukrainian drones and communication systems. The show is divided into several thematic areas, with visitors having the opportunity to learn the combat characteristics of the Western-made weapons as well as how the particular equipment was captured, the ministry said.

Houthis Claim Attacks Against Two Vessels, Two US Destroyers

Yemen's Houthi movement Ansar Allah has delivered strikes on two commercial vessels, Cyclades in the Red Sea and MSC Orion in the Indian Ocean, the movement’s representative Yahya Saria said.

The spokesman added that the movement delivered drone strikes on two US destroyers in the Red Sea. According to him, the hits "reached their targets."

Yemen's Houthi group said on Monday it had launched attacks on two U.S. warships and two commercial vessels linked to Israel, in what it described as retaliation for U.S. and British involvement in Yemen.

The group, which controls much of northern Yemen, said it targeted the American warships with drones in the Red Sea. "These operations have been successful," said Yahya Sarea, a Houthi military spokesman, in a statement broadcast by the Houthi-run al-Masirah TV.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Central Command said it intercepted on Sunday five Houthi drones in the Red Sea in a post on social platform X.

The Houthis also claimed responsibility for an attack on the CYCLADES, a cargo vessel they say was previously blacklisted by the group for violating the Houthi ban on ships traveling to Israeli ports. "The vessel was accurately hit in the Red Sea after it left the port of Eilat," Sarea said.

In addition, the group said it attacked the MSC ORION, a ship it described as Israeli, in the Indian Ocean.

The Houthi spokesman reiterated the group's position that it would continue its operations in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean until Israel ceases its actions in Gaza.

The Houthis have escalated their maritime attacks since last November, targeting vessels they claim are associated with Israel in a show of support for Palestinians engaged in the conflict with Israel.

In January, the United States and Britain initiated a military operation by carrying out airstrikes on Houthi military sites. In response, the Houthis escalated their attacks on commercial and military vessels from the United States and Britain in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

In March, the group’s leader mentioned that the group had started expanding the attack area to deter Israel-associated vessels from sailing via the Indian Ocean toward the Cape of Good Hope.

Houthi targeted the Cyclades commercial vessel and two US destroyers in the waters of the Red Sea, its spokesman declared in a televised address on Tuesday.

US calls for Russia to hold talks on ending the Ukraine conflict seem detached from reality and ignore Moscow’s previous attempts to reach a settlement, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken insisted on Monday that Moscow’s alleged plans “to erase Ukraine from the map… failed.” He added that he hopes Russian President Vladimir Putin has taken note of Western support for Ukraine, “gets the message, and demonstrates a willingness to genuinely negotiate consistent with the basic principles… of the international community and the UN Charter: sovereignty, territorial integrity, independence.”

Responding to Blinken’s remarks later that day, Zakharova said American politicians seem to live in a “mirror world.”

She recalled that in 2014 and 2015, Russia “showed respect for international law” by promoting the now-defunct Minsk agreements, which sought to end the bloodshed in the region by giving the two Donbass republics special status within the Ukrainian state.

Moscow has claimed that Kiev and Western countries never intended to implement the deal in the first place. Former Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko, ex-German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and ex-French President Francois Hollande have admitted that the primary purpose of the agreements was to help Kiev buy time to build a stronger military force.

Zakharova also noted that Moscow was ready to engage in peace talks in 2022. At the time, negotiations in Istanbul, Türkiye initially made headway, but later collapsed after what Russia claims was interference by then-UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who allegedly advised Kiev to keep fighting. Johnson has denied the accusation.

The spokeswoman stated that Blinken himself had proposed settling the conflict “based not on international law,” but on the ‘peace formula’ proposed by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, which demands that Russia withdraw all troops from the territory Kiev claims as its own and includes several other clauses that Moscow has rejected as unacceptable.

“Everything has gone haywire in the White House,” Zakharova said.

Moscow maintains that it is open to talks with Ukraine. However, Zelensky signed a decree in autumn 2022 barring negotiations with the current leadership in Moscow. The move came after four former Ukrainian regions voted overwhelmingly to join Russia.

Zakharova should not respond to blinken's ravings, most dignified countries know, the US, UK and the western alliance will maintain their evil mission with all their cunning, spreading slander with false information spread by western media, such as BBC, WP, INSIDERS, BLOOMBERG, etc.

Watch Russian FPV Drones Hammer Ukrainian Positions

The Russian Armed Forces use kamikaze drones, also known as suicide drones or loitering munitions, in their modern warfare arsenal. These unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are designed to locate and destroy high-value targets, such as enemy armored vehicles, infrastructure, and troop concentrations.

The Russian Defense Ministry has released footage showing Russian servicemen from Battlegroup Tsentr operating FPV drones, destroying Ukrainian positions in the Donetsk People's Republic.

One video shows the work of drone operators in the Semyonovka area, while another shows the work of drone operators in the vicinity of Spornoye.

Footage from the cameras installed directly on the drones shows how they approach the positions of Ukrainian troops. It also shows drones hitting their targets, as recorded by UAVs nearby.

Photos: Russia Presents First US-Made M1 Abrams Tank Destroyed in Special Op Zone

In September 2023, the US confirmed that Abrams tanks had begun arriving in Ukraine. In total, the Biden administration promised to give Kiev 31 Abrams tanks.

Recently, servicemen from Russia's Battlegroup Tsentr evacuated the first US-made M1 Abrams tankfrom the front line in the Avdeyevka area in Donbass.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, on May 1 an exhibition of captured equipment will be opened in front of the Victory Museum on Poklonnaya Hill, featuring, among others, Marder and Bradley IFVs as well as Leopard tanks for a whole month.

The Abrams is armed with a 105 mm M68A1 rifled gun or a 120 mm M256 (Rheinmetall Rh-120) smoothbore gun. Its weight is 54-66.8 tons, depending on modification and configuration.

Watch US-Made M88A1 ARV Arrive at Exhibition of Captured Western Military Hardware in Moscow

The US M88A1 Hercules is a heavy recovery vehicle designed to support main battle tanks like the M1 Abrams. It is specifically engineered to recover, repair, and redeploy damaged or disabled tanks on the battlefield.

The Russian Defense Ministry has released footage showing a US-made M88A1 armored recovery vehicle (ARV) arriving at an exhibition of captured NATO weapons taken from the conflict zone.

The main purpose of the ARV is to evacuate damaged tanks from the battlefield – but it appeared to fail at evacuating itself from the front line, since the vehicle was captured by Russian forces near Avdeyevka. The exhibition of captured weapons is being organized by the Russian Ministry of Defense on Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow, and will open its doors tomorrow, May 1.

Russian Air Defenses Shot Down Six US-Made ATACMS Missiles

The Russian military shot down six Ukrainian operational-tactical US-made long-range Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missiles over the previous 24 hours, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.

"Air defense means shot down ten Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles, six US-made ATACMS operational-tactical missiles and two French Hammer guided aerial bombs during the day," the Defense Ministry said in a summary.

Earlier, a Pentagon spokesperson told Sputnik that US President Joe Biden quietly directed his national security team to provide the ATACMS to Ukraine as part of the security assistance package announced in March, and that these munitions arrived in April.

The United States kept the ATACMS delivery secret at the time in order to maintain Ukraine's operational security, the spokesman said

Moscow has consistently warned against Western arms deliveries to Ukraine, stressing that they only prolong the conflict and cause more Ukrainian casualties.

The flow of military support to Kiev is becoming increasingly unpopular among Western citizens, but politicians continue to scare them into acquiescence with claims that Russia intends to invade NATO member states.
