One of the key pieces of evidence Israel has used to prove it had nothing to do with the deadly Gaza hospital bombing last week might be irrelevant to that whole case, the New York Times (NYT) reported on Tuesday, citing an extensive analysis conducted by its visual investigations team.

The footage initially taken by Al Jazeera was shared by the Israeli Foreign Ministry in the aftermath of the deadly strike on the Al-Ahli Arab Hosipital last Tuesday and was a central part of the Jewish state's denials in the immediate aftermath of the bombing.

The clip shows a projectile flying above Gaza and exploding mid-air, with its parts falling to the ground below. Another blast – this time on the ground – follows.

West Jerusalem claimed that the video shows a malfunctioning rocket launched by the Gaza-based Islamic Jihad group. It was supposedly this projectile that caused the deadly explosion at the Al-Ahli Hospital.

Israel’s Gaza hospital bombing claims not credible – analystsREAD MORE Israel’s Gaza hospital bombing claims not credible – analysts

The high-profile incident saw a major blast rocking a parking lot inside the hospital yard. Although the building itself did not sustain major damage, the explosion nevertheless reportedly killed around 500 people, who had allegedly gathered in the yard to seek refuge from the Israeli bombardment of the Palestinian enclave, according to the local health authorities.

The NYT analysts concluded that the mid-air blast depicted in he video could have hardly led to such devastating consequences since it took place around two miles (more than three kilometers) away from the medical facility. It was an “unrelated aspect” of the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Gaza-based militant groups, the media outlet said.

“The missile in the video was never near the hospital. It was launched from Israel, not Gaza, and appears to have exploded above the Israeli-Gaza border, at least two miles away from the hospital,” the paper said. Even though this piece of evidence does not shed light on what exactly happened at the hospital, the Israeli officials’ attempt to build their case upon it “complicates the straightforward narrative they have put forth,” it added.

The NYT said that it had synchronized the Al Jazeera footage with five other videos taken at the same time, including the ones filmed by an Israeli television station, Channel 12, and a CCTV camera in Tel Aviv. These clips provided the view of the mid-air incident from north, south, east, and west. The paper’s analysts then triangulated the launch point in the videos, using satellite imagery, and determined that the projectile was fired towards Gaza from Israel. The media outlet then said it could not identify the exact type of projectile seen on the video.

Earlier, several groups of journalists and analysts at various NGOs and media outlets questioned the Israeli narrative based on the video as well. Teams at Qatar's Al Jazeera and the British network Channel 4 studied the footage and concluded that the flash could not be linked with the subsequent explosion at the hospital.

The flash “was in fact consistent with Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system intercepting a missile fired from the Gaza Strip and destroying it in midair,” Al Jazeera said at that time.

Russia has conducted a major exercise aimed at testing its strategic nuclear forces, the Kremlin confirmed on Wednesday. The drills involved all three components of the nuclear triad: intercontinental ballistic missiles, nuclear-armed submarines, and strategic bombers, the statement said.

According to Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, the drills focused on the simulated delivery of “a massive nuclear strike by the strategic offensive-oriented forces in response to a nuclear strike by a [simulated] enemy.”

The test also evaluated military leadership readiness capacity to command the strategic nuclear forces, the Kremlin added. All forces involved “followed through” with their goals, it added.

The exercise involved launching Russia’s state-of-the-art Yars intercontinental ballistic missile from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in the country’s north. The missile successfully hit its target at the Kura Missile Test Range, on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia’s far east, more than 5,700 kilometers from the launch site.

Russia’s nuclear-powered ‘Tula’ submarine launched a ‘Sineva’ ballistic missile from the Barents Sea, just north of the Arkhangelsk Region, the statement said. Tu-95 strategic nuclear bombers also launched several nuclear-capable cruise missiles, it added.

The drills were personally overseen by Russian President Vladimir Putin, and partly coordinated by the Russian National Defense Operations Center in Moscow.

The Defense Ministry has also published a series of videos reportedly of the drills, featuring ballistic missile launches and Russian strategic bombers.

On Tuesday, the Russian Federation Council – the upper house of the national parliament – approved a bill that would withdraw Russian ratification of a treaty banning such tests. The Russian State Duma, the lower house, had previously passed the legislation.

Moscow has however also pledged to refrain from conducting nuclear tests even after the legal obligations are removed, unless the US does so first.

Ratified by Russia in 2000, the 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) has not yet come into force, since its terms require ratification by a set of nations, including the US. Moscow previously explained its decision to withdraw from the agreement by pointing to the position of Washington, which had not ratified the treaty but “deems it appropriate to lecture the signatories.”

Moscow has also vowed to refrain from conducting nuclear tests even after the legal obligations are removed, unless the US does so first.

Google Maps, Waze and Apple Maps are no longer showing live traffic updates for Israel and Gaza, according to multiple media reports. The move comes ahead of an expected invasion of the Palestinian territory by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

“As we have done previously in conflict situations and in response to the evolving situation in the region, we have temporarily disabled the ability to see live traffic conditions and business information out of consideration for the safety of local communities,” a Google spokesperson told Bloomberg on Monday.

He noted that while real-time traffic data has been turned off, users can still use the navigation systems and will still be able to see the estimated times of arrival, which will be based on live conditions.

Another source with knowledge of the situation told Bloomberg that Google’s removal of real-time crowding data in Israel and Gaza was done at the request of the IDF, as such information could potentially reveal Israeli troop movements.

Previously, Google made a similar move when it disabled live traffic data on Google Maps in Ukraine in 2022 following the launch of Russia’s military operation. At the time, the company said it made the decision after consulting with Ukrainian authorities.

According to Israeli tech outlet Geek Time, Apple appears to have started adhering to the IDF request on Monday, with users unable to see live traffic reports on Apple Maps.

Meanwhile, US officials have reportedly expressed concerns over Israel’s anticipated ground operation, with some suggesting that the IDF does not have a workable plan for sending troops into Gaza, and could end up being unable to eliminate Hamas.

Hamas launched an incursion into Israel on October 7, killing an estimated 1,400 Israelis and taking another 200 hostage. Israel responded by declaring war on the Palestinian group and laying siege to Gaza, while launching artillery and air strikes and killing more than 5,000 people, according to local authorities.

Iraq base with US troops again targeted by rockets: Report

Citing two security sources, the Reuters news agency says two rockets landed inside Ain al-Asad air base, which hosts US and other international forces west of Baghdad.

US officials have said the base is among several in Iraq and Syria that have been targeted amid the conflict in Gaza.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the most recent attack or if there were any injuries, although top US diplomat Blinken earlier today broadly blamed recent attacks on US targets in the region on “Iran proxies”.

A Pentagon spokesman is expected to hold a news briefing later this afternoon; We will bring you more information about this when we have it.

Situation at al-Wafa hospital ‘very, very sad’, medical director says

Dr Hassan Khalaf, medical director of al-Wafa Hospital in Gaza, says the situation there is “very, very sad” due to the lack of medication, water, food, and electricity.

“All hospitals are depending on electric generators which is not ideal,” Khalaf said.

At least 30 wounded people were moved from al-Shifa Hospital to al-Wafa Hospital, he said, “just to give them space for new injured people”.

“In my hospital, we are treating the elderly and bedridden cases with chronic diseases,” he said, however doctors are only able to provide care that is “minimal”.

“Even food – we don’t have food. We depend on bean cans and jam and cheese, so dry food,” Khalaf said.

While a small solar power system helps with some lighting, Khalaf says a feeling of uncertainty and fear lingers around when “disaster” will strike – and when “all [the] people here will die on the spot”.

The Russian armed forces have repelled 16 attacks by the Ukrainian military in the Zaporozhye and Kupyansk directions, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Monday.

Tens of thousands of pieces of AFU equipment destroyed by Russian Forces during SWO - watch russian forces equipment in kombat action "In the Zaporozhye direction, units of the Russian group of troops, with the support of aviation and artillery fire, repelled seven attacks by assault groups of the 82nd airborne assault brigade of the armed forces of Ukraine in the area of the settlement of Rabotino in the Zaporozhye region," the ministry said.

Ukraine lost 80 soldiers in the Zaporozhye direction and another 195 soldiers in the Kupyansk direction, the ministry added. Russia repelled 12 attacks by Ukraine in the Krasny Liman direction and Kiev lost up to 480 soldiers, in the South Donetsk direction Ukraine lost up to 160 service people, and Ukraine lost up to 165 soldiers, the ministry said.

A total of 508 aircraft, 253 helicopters, 8,176 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), 441 anti-aircraft missile systems, 12,882 tanks and other armored fighting vehicles, 1,169 multiple rocket launchers (MLR), 6,853 field artillery and mortars, as well as 14,583 units of special military vehicles have been destroyed by Russia's forces since the onset of the special military operation.

Zelensky orders Ukrainian army to advance ‘500 meters a day’

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has set a daunting task for his military, demanding that they take at least 500 meters of territory every day from Russian forces after suffering tens of thousands of casualties in their floundering counteroffensive.

“Ukraine needs results every day,” Zelensky said in his evening video address on Sunday. “We need to resist the Russian assaults, kill the occupiers and move forward. We must advance by at least a kilometer, at least 500 meters, every day. We must keep moving forward in order to improve the Ukrainian positions and put pressure on the occupiers.”

Such progress is needed to strengthen Ukraine and motivate foreign allies to provide more military support, Zelensky said, adding that next week “will bring more opportunities for Ukraine.”

Zelensky made his comments at a time when Russian forces are advancing around the town of Avdeevka in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and Kupyansk, in Ukraine’s Kharkov Region

Earlier this month, Russian President Vladimir Putin estimated that Ukrainian forces had suffered more than 90,000 casualties in their counteroffensive, which began in early June, describing it as “failed.” Meanwhile, the head of Ukrainian military intelligence, Kirill Budanov, admitted in an interview that the operation isn’t so much “behind schedule” as off the schedule entirely.

Kiev also faces a potential competition for Western support and attention after surprise attacks by Hamas ignited a new war in Israel earlier this month. Even before the latest Israel-Hamas conflict began, President Joe Biden’s administration was struggling to win approval from US lawmakers for additional military and economic aid to Ukraine.

The White House unveiled a $106 billion emergency spending request on Friday, including $61.4 billion for Kiev, $14.3 billion for Israel and $9.2 billion for related humanitarian aid. Most congressional Republicans voted against a smaller Ukraine aid bill earlier this month, and the Pentagon warned that it had exhausted “nearly all available security-assistance funding” for Kiev that was previously approved.
