US urges six-month sentence for former Trump adviser Steve Bannon

The US Department of Justice has asked a federal judge to sentence former President Donald Trump’s adviser Steve Bannon to six months in prison for defying a subpoena to testify before a congressional committee investigating the United States Capitol riot.

US prosecutors recommended the sentence on Monday, accusing Bannon of pursuing “a bad-faith strategy of defiance and contempt” and publicly disparaging the panel investigating the attack on January 6, 2021.

The Justice Department also urged US District Judge Carl Nichols to fine Bannon $200,000.

“Throughout the pendency of this case, the Defendant has exploited his notoriety — through courthouse press conferences and his War Room podcast — to display to the public the source of his bad-faith refusal to comply with the committee’s subpoena: a total disregard for government processes and the law,” the department wrote in its filing.

The recommendations come just days after the January 6 panel last week voted to subpoena Trump in an effort to compel the ex-president’s testimony about the Capitol riot and his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 US presidential election.

It is unclear if Trump, who denounced the subpoena last week, will comply with the panel’s move.

Refusal to comply with a subpoena can result in criminal charges.

Bannon was convicted of two counts of contempt of Congress in July, and will be sentenced by Nichols on Friday morning.

Each count is punishable by between 30 days to one year in prison and a fine ranging between $100 to $100,000.

Bannon’s attorneys filed a sentencing memo on Monday saying their client should be sentenced to probation only. If the judge insists on incarceration, then Bannon should be permitted to serve his sentence at home, and not in prison, they said

In their memo, they argued that Bannon was convicted on statutes governed by “outdated” case law, and that he relied on his lawyer’s legal advice by not appearing before the committee.

“The facts of this case show that Mr. Bannon’s conduct was based on his good-faith reliance on his lawyer’s advice,” they wrote.

The Department of Justice said it asked the judge to impose the maximum fee of $200,000 due to Bannon’s “insistence on paying the maximum fine rather than cooperate with the Probation Office’s routine pre-sentencing financial investigation”.

The department also expressed frustration that Bannon had not produced a “single document” for the committee, and stated that Bannon’s refusal to cooperate with the subpoena undermined the committee’s work.

“The defendant’s statements prove that his contempt was not aimed at protecting executive privilege or the Constitution, rather it was aimed at undermining the committee’s efforts to investigate an historic attack on government,” the department said

The committee wanted to speak with Bannon because it had information that he was actively involved in planning, logistics and fundraising for Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election and stop Congress from certifying President Joe Biden’s victory.

The panel’s subpoena demanded any documents or communications relating to Trump and others in his orbit, including lawyer Rudy Giuliani, as well as far-right groups such as the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers.

Separately, Bannon has also been charged with two counts of money laundering, three counts of conspiracy and one count of scheming to defraud in a case involving donations for the construction of a wall on the US-Mexico border that allegedly defrauded donors .

Bannon has pleaded not guilty to those charges and dismissed them as “all nonsense”.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the incident took place during a training flight. A Su-34 fighter-bombers crashed into a residential apartment building in the resort town of Yeysk, southern Russia on Monday evening.

Amateur footage filmed from a building across the street from the area where the plane is thought to have gone down shows a fireball burning in front of a nine story apartment complex, with repeated explosions going off and a plume of thick black smoke rising into the sky.

In a statement Monday evening, the Russian military confirmed that one of its Su-34 jets went down within Yeysk's city limits during a training flight, with its pilots successfully ejecting. The accident is thought to have been caused by the ignition of one of the plane's engines.

"According to a report by the pilots, who ejected, the crash was caused by the ignition of one of the plane's engines during takeoff," the MoD said. The ministry confirmed that the plane's onboard jet fuel ignited at the crash site after impact.

President Putin has been informed on the crash, and heard reports on the incident from the relevant ministries and the head of Russia's Krasnodar region, according to the Kremlin. The Russian president instructed regional authorities and the heads of Russia's Emergencies Ministry and the Ministry of Health to travel to Yeysk to assist in the emergency response and help those affected in the incident. At least 17 apartments were damaged in the crash. Health authorities have not yet published information on casualties.

The Sukhoi Su-34 is a twin-engine, twin-seat, all-weather supersonic fighter-bomber/strike aircraft manufactured by JSC Sukhoi. Developed at the twilight of the Soviet period and first flown in 1990, the jet was introduced into service with the Russian Aerospace Forces in 2014 after more than two decades of delays stemming from post-Soviet funding cuts.

Su-34s are powered by a pair of Saturn AL-31FM1 turbofan engines, a modification of the AL-31 axial flow turbofan engine design in use aboard the Su-27 since the mid-1980s. The same engine is also used by the Su-35, and Su-57 fighters, the S-70B Okhotnik-B drone concept and Chinese Shenyang J-11, Chengdu J-10 and Chengdu J-20 jets, and has been touted for its reliability and durability.

Russia has more than 140 Su-34s in its inventory. The fighter-bombers have been used extensively in the campaign against Daesh (ISIS)* in Syria, and in the ongoing "special military operation" in Ukraine.

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram that there was an explosion in the city’s central Shevchenkivskyi district on Monday morning. He later reported on a second blast in the same district.

Sounds of explosions were heard in the city of Kiev on Monday morning, Ukrainian media report.

Earlier on Monday, an air raid warning was issued in the Kiev region, as well as the city of Kiev, according to the regional and city authorities.

According to Ukrainian media reports, as of 06:15 local time on Monday (03:15 GMT), air raid warnings were in effect in the Zhitomir, Vinnitsa, Cherkasy, Kirovograd, Nikolaev and Odessa regions.

Explosions were reported in various parts of Ukraine late on Sunday night, including the cities of Nikolaev and Odessa. In Nikolaev, a fire erupted at a fuel storage site after the blasts, according to Ukrainian media reports.

According to regional authorities, critical infrastructure sites were targeted in the Sumy and Dnepropetrovsk regions on Monday morning. A fire erupted at an energy infrastructure site in the Dnepropetrovsk region after the blast.

The attacks came exactly one week after Russia unleashed its heaviest aerial bombardment of Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities since the start of the war - also during morning rush hour.

Russia has accused Ukraine of hitting targets in Belgorod region near the border. Pro-Russian news sources on the Telegram social media app reported that Ukraine had struck Belgorod's airport overnight. There was no immediate comment from Kyiv, which typically does not comment on incidents in Russia.

Elsewhere on Monday, renewed Russian shelling near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, Europe's largest, caused it to be disconnected again from Ukraine's power grid, Ukrainian state energy firm Energoatom said.

In southern central Ukraine, a large fire broke out at an energy facility in the Dnipropetrovsk region after an overnight missile hit, a local official said. Ukraine also reported strikes that set ablaze a sunflower oil terminal in the southern port of Mykolaiv.

"Termasuk prodi S1 Kimia oleh Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)," tutur Dede.

Dede menuturkan capaian akreditasi internasional ini sekaligus membuktikan FMIPA UI mampu meningkatkan Indikator Kinerja Utama (IKU) poin 8 yaitu jumlah prodi berstandar internasional.

No Trust for Truss: Why End is Nigh for Liz's Prime Ministership

No Trust for Truss: Why End is Nigh for Liz's Prime Ministership

No Trust for Truss: Why End is Nigh for Liz's Prime Ministership

Liz Truss' premiership is looking increasingly in peril after five weeks of navigating the country through an economic storm. On Friday, she sacked her top finance minister, Kwasi Kwarteng, and shelved her ambitious plan to reduce corporation tax. Meanwhile, the new chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, is said to be undoing Truss' other flagship policies.

"The premiership of Liz Truss is in grave danger," said Alistair Jones, associate professor of politics at De Montfort University in the UK. "The track record in the five weeks she's been in office has been absolutely abysmal where the UK economy has done very, very badly. Global confidence in the government and the way it's planning on running things has been massively undermined. The knock-on effect of this has been for Liz Truss to sack her chancellor of the exchequer, Kwasi Kwarteng, even though he was implementing the policies that she wanted to be implemented."

Jones explained that the entire campaign that Truss ran to become Conservative Party leader "was based around cutting taxes and also targeting some aspects of reduced spending, but basically trying to get the economy to grow." She vehemently criticized those who threw the viability of her plan into question as part of "anti-growth coalition," the academic noted, adding that eventually "this backfired massively, because so many international organizations questioned what she was doing."

However, markets reacted negatively to the Truss Cabinet's mini-budget, announced by then-Chancellor Kwarteng late last month. Borrowing and mortgage costs went up, while the pound sterling went down. Notably, the UK prime minister's decision to fire her chancellor and make a U-turn on her flagship tax-cutting policy on October 14 did not end the market turmoil: the British pound and government bonds fell again.

"Never before has Britain found itself in such a humiliatingly risible position," The Atlantic remarked on Friday. "It is the stuff of nightmares: the national equivalent of getting caught short onstage in front of your entire school because you chose not to go to the bathroom when you had the chance.

"The knock-on effect of this, though, has been for the Conservative Party to lose even more confidence in Liz Truss as prime minister," noted Jones. "Now it must be borne in mind that when the leadership election started, which she eventually won, about 50 MPs out of the 350 odd Conservative MPs actually backed. So you're talking therefore one in seven. In this respect, she did not have the support of Conservative MPs. Even though she won the election and many of them rallied round behind her - the reality is their support at best was lukewarm."

According to the professor, Truss "has done huge amounts of damage to the economy and to her party and to the credibility of the country in a very short space of time." He presumed that the appointment of Jeremy Hunt as the new chancellor looks like "a lack of confidence in Liz Truss."

Indeed, the British press of all stripes describes Hunt as the only adult in the room. The Guardian noted that the former health secretary is seen as "the most powerful man in government." The Spectator agreed: "Truss is now prime minister in name only: Jeremy Hunt, her chancellor of the exchequer, now holds power." According to the media, Hunt has repudiated the prime minister's mini-budget and is now working on a medium-term financial strategy at the Treasury, while operating in tandem with Andrew Bailey, governor of the Bank of England. A newly-empowered Office of Budget Responsibility (OBR) approves of Hunt's approach. "Each of these institutions – the Bank, the Treasury and the OBR – were treated with disdain by Truss and Kwarteng," The Spectator added.

"There is speculation that Liz Truss will be gone potentially in a matter of days if not weeks. And the reason being the lack of confidence in her ability to lead the party," Jones noted. "Her Cabinet was made up of allies rather than trying to unify the party, and they were basically simply isolated from the rest of the party. Her speeches, and even with the sacking of Kwasi Kwarteng, that particular press conference, instilled little or no confidence in her ability to lead."

"One of them, possibly Mordaunt, [would] be prime minister," the academic continued. "And if she was to be prime minister, Rishi Sunak would be head chancellor of the exchequer and Jeremy Hunt could choose whatever job he wanted. Apart from those two, if Sunak was to become prime minister, Jeremy Hunt, as speculated, will stay in post as chancellor and Penny Mordaunt will become deputy prime minister and also foreign secretary."

As of yet, this is all speculation, because there is a whole argument about whether or not the Conservative Party wants to go through the turmoil of another leadership election, according to the professor.

There are many various potential successors being considered in the press: from Secretary of State for Defense Ben Wallace to former Chancellor Rishi Sunak. What saves Truss at the moment is that "there is no common consensus on who would be best placed to take over," according to The Spectator. Nonetheless, the British media doesn't rule out that the patience of British MPs will soon become extremely thin resulting in Truss' ouster.
