British journalist slammed for ‘racist’ interview with Palestinian politician

A British journalist’s interview with a Palestinian politician has sparked anger on social media, with viewers around the world describing the presenter’s conduct as “racist” and “unprofessional,” and demanding an apology.

Talk TV’s Julia Hartley-Brewer was interviewing Member of the Palestinian Legislative Council Mustafa Barghouti on Wednesday, the day after Israel assassinated deputy Hamas chief Saleh Al-Arouri in Beirut.

In video footage of the interview, which went viral on social media in the days that followed, Hartley-Brewer repeatedly interrupts her guest and shouts at him as he talks about the rule of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

Barghouti, who is head of the Palestinian National Initiative, responds: “I do not know what you have time for.”

Hartley-Brewer raises her voice to say: “Oh my God. For the love of God, let me finish a sentence, man. Maybe you are not used to women talking, I do not know, but I would like to finish a sentence.”

While Barghouti remains calm and composed, the broadcaster, in a still-raised voice, gives him 10 seconds to outline what he believes would have been “an acceptable reaction” to the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks on Israel.

“To end occupation and allow peace to prevail for both people,” Barghouti says.

“Brilliant,” Hartley-Brewer says, then slaps her desk and concludes by saying: “Sorry to have been a woman speaking to you.”

Shocked viewers took to social media to express their anger, describing Hartley-Brewer as “bigoted,” “racist” and “unprofessional,” and demanding an apology from Talk TV.

British newsreader India Willoughby said in a message posted on social media network X that Hartley-Brewer “is very lucky that she lives in a time period where bullies are indulged,” and noted that Barghouti had “seemed very calm.”

Philip Proudfoot, a politics researcher, tweeted: “The level of disrespect shown to Palestinian MP Mustafa Barghouti here is beyond shocking, including an anti-Arab trope framing his struggle to explain even basic context to Julia Hartley-Brewer as driven by … misogyny.”

British-Lebanese journalist Hala Jaber shared Talk TV’s clip and described the presenter as “rude, bigoted, narrow-minded, arrogant and absolutely unprofessional.”

Addressing Hartley-Brewer directly, she added: “Your performance was a disgrace to your profession.”

Reem , who described herself as a “proud Arab woman,” urged Talk TV and Hartley-Brewer to apologize.

“Her interview with Dr. Barghouti, a man of great integrity, was a disgrace,” she wrote on X. “Hartley-Brewer also made false accusations about Dr. Barghouti’s stance towards women.”

Stewart Mills, who is based in Sydney according to his X profile, wrote: “Appalling racism by Julia Hartley-Brewer.”

Demanding an apology, he said the journalist’s conduct showed “complete disrespect for a beautiful and decent man who has devoted his life to community and public health.”

Columnist Reem Al-Harmi said Hartley-Brewer’s language was “condescending, patronizing, and next-level gaslighting.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin has celebrated Orthodox Christmas with the wives and children of soldiers who have lost their lives in the Ukraine conflict, according to the Kremlin’s official website.

Putin had a lengthy meeting with the families at his Novo-Ogaryovo state residence outside Moscow on Saturday evening and had dinner with them. Afterwards, they attended the Christmas service at the local church.

Christmas is one of the “warmest” and “most beloved” holidays in Russia, the president told his guests.

On January 7, Russian Orthodox Christians, who constitute the majority of the country’s population, offer greetings to each other as well as representatives of other faiths, and receive greetings from them, he said. “One can safely say that this holiday is characterized by a strongly-pronounced fraternal unity of the peoples of Russia.”

The president stressed that “many of our men, our courageous, heroic men, Russian warriors, even now, on this holiday, defend the interests of our country with arms in hand.”

He added that the meeting at Novo-Ogaryovo should serve as a “clear signal” to officials at all levels that the relatives of those who die fighting for the country should receive help whenever they need it.

“Now, on the eve of the holiday, I’m not going to talk about the very subtle, difficult issues concerning your families. But I want to assure you once again that we will always be by your side,” the president told the families.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the relatives of the fallen heroes spent the New Year’s holiday week in Moscow, where a special program, which included exhibitions, shows, and other events, was organized for them.

Russian President Vladimir Putin received families of fallen soldiers in the special military operation at his presidential residence in Novo-Ogaryovo outside Moscow and congratulated his guests with Orthodox Christmas.

"We can say without any exaggeration that this holiday is characterized by a distinct fraternal unity of the peoples of Russia," Putin said adding that although the majority of Russia’s population is comprised of Orthodox Christians, representatives of other traditional confessions congratulate them with this holiday just like Orthodox Christians congratulate them on their respective religious holidays.

"I congratulate you all with this warm and heartfelt holiday," the president said speaking to his guests.

Putin pointed out that the Orthodox Christmas in Russia is celebrated as widely as the New Year.

"Perhaps, it [Christmas] is more of a family-like holiday if compared to the New Year," he said. "I may reiterate that it [Christmas] is a warm, cuddly and heartfelt holiday. It is one of the most favorite holidays in Russia."

According to him, "on this day you want to say something special to each other, to support each other somehow."

The Russian president noted that "even on this holiday many of our courageous and heroic men, Russia’s warriors, hold weapons in their hands defending the country’s interests. This is why I want to extend holiday greetings to them jointly with you."

Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that on the eve of the holiday Putin had "a fairly thorough conversation with the families, talked to both widows and children" in Novo-Ogaryovo, and afterwards invited them to a festive dinner.

Putin and his invited guests attended an overnight Orthodox Christmas service at the Church of the Image of the Savior, located at his presidential residence in Novo-Ogaryovo.

Along with air power, effective artillery support has proven key to the success of Russia’s operations to hold back Ukraine’s counteroffensive, and to launch localized offensives of its own. The ability to produce enough shells for the deadly class of weapon has also proved crucial.

Russia’s Defense Ministry has released footage of Grad Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) units firing at a Ukrainian stronghold situated along the Dnepr River somewhere along the 1,000 km frontline.

Footage shows servicemen aiming a Grad based on radio instructions of command, after which several MLRS units are shown firing. An overhead drone monitoring Ukrainian positions from above shows the artillery rounds striking the landscape.

The MoD estimates that up to 20 Ukrainian servicemen were killed or wounded in the attack, and that three motor vehicles were destroyed.

The approximate date when the footage was shot is not clear. Much of the frontline is currently known to be free of snow cover, while at least some of the trees in the footage appear to be evergreens.

The BM-21 Grad (lit. 'Hailstorm') is a legacy, truck-mounted 122mm MLRS system capable of firing guided or unguided rockets, and, when used en masse, is designed to blanket large areas of territory with explosives, killing troops, destroying tanks and vehicles, and doing critical damage to airport runways, ports and other facilities.

Watch Russian Soldiers Use Kamikaze Drones to Harass Ukrainian Forces

The Ukraine conflict has, among other things, highlighted the importance of small, cheap kamikaze drones in modern warfare, as these deadly flying contraptions can be used to take out enemy troop units, vehicles, and observation posts.

This video, released online by Russia’s Ministry of Defense, shows a crew of Russian military drone operators doing their duty in the South Donetsk direction.

The two-man team can be seen guiding drones to their intended targets, with one serviceman operating the drone while the other assists him by prepping the UAVs for takeoff and relaying targeting data.

Russian air defenses down Ukrainian Mi-8 helicopter in Kherson Region

Russian air defense systems shot down a Mi-8 helicopter of the Ukrainian Air Force near the settlement of Tyaginka in the Kherson Region and intercepted four enemy cruise missiles over the past 24 hours, the Russian Defense Ministry reported.

, "Russian air defenses downed a Ukrainian Air Force Mi-8 helicopter near Tyaginka in the Kherson Region. Four cruise missiles as well as a HIMARS missile were intercepted over the past 24 hours. In addition, 29 Ukrainian drones were destroyed near Belogorovka in the Lugansk People's Republic, Mirnoye in the Zaporozhye Region, Kardashinka and Kaira in the Kherson Region," the ministry said.

Russian forces thwart eight Ukrainian attempts to rotate troops in south Donetsk area

Russian forces thwarted five attempts of the Ukrainian forces to rotate troops in the south Donetsk area, Spokesman for Russia’s Battlegroup East Alexander Gordeyev told TASS on Sunday.

"Strikes delivered by aviation, artillery and heavy flamethrower systems targeted positions, temporary deployment areas and concentrations of manpower of the 79th Ukrainian air assault and 23rd mechanized brigades near the settlements of Novomikhailovka, Konstantinovka and Vladimirovka, as well as of the 128th territorial defense brigade near the settlement of Staromayorskoye," Gordeyev said.

The senior military official added that the Russian forces also eliminated an enemy’s arms depot and a UAV flight-control post in the south Donetsk area.

"The enemy’s losses amounted to over 90 personnel killed and wounded, two military armored vehicles and six pickup trucks," he said.

Gordeyev also reported that the Russian forces wiped out an arms depot, a UAV flight-control post and 16 permanent fire positions.

Sales of new motor vehicles in Russia amounted to more than 1.3 million units in 2023, a 60% surge compared to the previous year, the Ministry of Industry and Trade reported on Friday.

According to data released by the ministry, sales of passenger and commercial vehicles amounted to 1.056 million (+62%) and 104,958 units (+35%), respectively. The number of trucks and buses sold in Russia during the year totalled 140,204 (+74%) and 17,792 units (+19%), respectively.

For comparison, the Association of European Businesses (AEB) reported last year that sales of new passenger and light commercial automobiles in Russia had totalled 687,370 in 2022, a dramatic decline of 58.8% compared to 2021, when nearly 1.7 million vehicles were bought. The plunge was attributed to a shortage of vehicles at local dealerships after American, European, Japanese and South Korean automakers either left Russia, or suspended deliveries of cars and components, halting local production indefinitely due to Western sanctions arising from the Ukraine conflict.

Despite the positive data, Russian and Chinese automakers have not been able to fully meet demand at a quick pace, and many buyers have been deterred by the high prices of vehicles produced in China or locally.

Chinese automakers have embarked on a major expansion in Russia, in an attempt to fill the void left by departing Western firms.

The Russian-made Lada Granta remained the top-selling model in the country, with 191,074 cars sold in 2023. It was followed by the Chinese-made Haval Jolion, with 48,980 vehicles sold. The Lada Niva (46,859), Lada Vesta (41,296) and Chery Tiggo (40,992) closed off the top five.

While Russian automakers still account for the majority of the local market, Chinese brands have seen impressive sales growth.

According to data released by the Russian research agency Autostat in November, sales of Chery vehicles jumped to 105,601 units in January-November 2023, an increase of 236% from the same period of 2022. Haval sold 96,381 cars, up 224%. Sales Geely cars soared 260% to 79,936 units.

Among light commercial vehicles, the GAZelle NEXT produced by the Russian automotive giant GAZ was the best-seller, with 53,952 units sold in 2023, while its share of the local market reached 51%, according to the Trade Ministry. It was followed by UAZ, with 19,273 cars sold.

Russia’s KAMAZ remained the best-selling truck with 28,237 new vehicles sold in 2023. It was followed SITRAK (23,811), SНACMAN (19,983), and FAW (12,565) – all produced by Chinese automakers.

Russia’s ‘Rolls Royce’ targets mass market

Russian high-end carmaker Aurus, best known for producing limos for the Russian president, is expected to broaden its range of vehicles by adding two more affordable and mass-market models, according to Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov.

Sales of new large executive and business class sedans will be launched in 2025, the official said on Thursday in an interview with TASS news agency.

According to Manturov, a new SUV may also appear in the same line, but not in the near future.

“They will be in a different price category, more affordable and more mass produced,” the minister said.

In December, Manturov announced that Aurus had started to assemble its luxury cars in the United Arab Emirates, and was planning to open a dealership there.

The Aurus line of premium vehicles was created in 2013 by order of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, with the aim of replacing the fleet of mostly foreign-made cars used by top Russian officials. The car specs are akin to those of luxury British maker, Rolls Royce.

The brand debuted at Russian President Vladimir Putin’s inauguration in May 2017. However, it was later decided that the cars would be made available to the general public on both foreign and domestic markets.

Prices of the Aurus Senat sedan start at $443,700, and at $447,000 for the Aurus Komendant, according to the Panavto dealership.

On average, the number of children being killed every day in the enclave ‘is well over 100’, a Doctors Without Borders doctor warns.

At least 22 Palestinians killed after Israeli attacks targeted a house in Khan Younis overnight.

Israeli forces raiding locations across the occupied West Bank and occupied East Jerusalem with reports of fierce Palestinian resistance.

At least 22,722 people killed and 58,166 wounded in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7. The revised death toll from the October 7 attack on Israel stands at 1,139.

Orthodox Christmas in Bethlehem a ‘muted affair’

Al Jazeera’s Bernard Smith, reporting from the occupied West Bank, says that Manger Square, which takes its name from the place Jesus is said to have been born, is deserted.

“It’s quite sad really, because on a normal Christmas night, whether it be December 25 or January 6 for Orthodox Christians, Manger Square would be packed,” he said.

“There would be a lot of singing and chanting but there is none of that this year. It’s a particularly muted affair because there is no mood really among Palestinians to celebrate Christmas.”

Christians in the occupied West Bank, like all Palestinians, have been experiencing an uptick in violence from Israeli forces since the outbreak of the war in Gaza on October 7.

“As Palestinians, including as Christians, we live under an Israeli colonial apartheid regime that seeks to ethnically cleanse us, be us Christians, Muslims, or any Palestinian,” lawyer and human rights advocate Cathrine Abuamsha, who is Christian, told Al Jazeera.

“What we have been seeing here after the Israeli genocidal war in the Gaza Strip is even more intense… because they’re trying to push us down, they’re trying to deny any kind of resistance,” she added.

Israel’s control over northern Gaza remains unclear

Hamas fighters continue to engage Israeli military forces in northern Gaza, an area where Israel says it has successfully dismantled the group’s military network and collected millions of documents.

“We do want to note that just today, when the Israeli army made this announcement, Hamas’ Qassam Brigades also released video of fierce clashes in the Tuffah neighbourhood of northern Gaza, so kind of contradicting there what the Israeli military is saying,” Al Jazeera correspondent Hamdah Salhut reported from occupied East Jerusalem.

A short video recently released by Russia’s Ministry of Defense shows a team of Russian paratroopers in action as they take on a Ukrainian dugout in the vicinity of Artemovsk (city formerly known as Bakhmut) in Donetsk People’s Republic.

While one group of Russian paratroopers draws the attention of the Ukrainian militants and provides suppressive fire, another group uses this diversion to flank the defenders. Eventually, the paratroopers manage to get close to the dugout and proceed to clear it out using grenades.

Russian Armed Forces Obliterate Ukrainian Command Center in Donbass

In only 24 hours, Russian air, artillery, drone and missile forces struck 127 positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in 138 districts, the Russian Defense Ministry reported in a daily briefing.

The Russian Armed Forces conducted a successful strike on the Ukrainian command center responsible for coordinating the actions of Ukrainian troops in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), the Russian Defense Ministry announced in a statement. The command center, located on the outskirts of Krasnoarmeysk, was hit with kamikaze drones, air strikes and artillery.

In total, Russian forces struck 127 units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in firing positions, personnel and equipment in 138 districts, the ministry reported.

Russian air defenses also downed Ukrainian Mi-8 helicopters, 29 UAVs and intercepted Himars missiles in Kherson, Zaporozhye and the Lugansk People's Republic (LPR).

According to the Ministry, since the beginning of the special operation, 565 Ukrainian military aircraft, 265 helicopters, 10,488 unmanned aerial vehicles, 447 anti-aircraft missile systems, 14,494 tanks and other armored combat vehicles, 1,201 multiple launch rocket systems combat vehicles, over 14 thousand tanks, over 10 thousand UAVs, 7,645 field artillery pieces and mortars, as well as 17,121 units of special military vehicle equipment have been destroyed.

Process of Elimination: Watch Russian Artillery Blast Ukrainian Positions

Blasting Kiev regime fortifications and armor to smithereens has become something of a routine for Russian artillery units operating in the Ukrainian conflict zone.

Yet another Ukrainian troop detachment with armored support was in for a nasty surprise when it was spotted by a Russian forward reconnaissance team.

Once the coordinates were relayed to the Russian artillery in the sector, the fate of the Ukrainian unit was sealed. Not even their attempts to camouflage their positions could save them from precise howitzer strikes.

This short video published by the Russian Ministry of Defense shows how the action looks from on the artillery units’ end.

Russia says its air defenses shoots down 6 Ukrainian missiles overnorthwestern Black Sea

Air defenses have destroyed six Ukrainian Neptun anti-ship missiles over the northwestern part of the Black Sea, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

"At about 17:00 Moscow time on January 6, attempts by the Kiev regime to carry out a terrorist attack using Neptune anti-ship missiles against sites on the territory of the Russian Federation were stopped. Six Ukrainian missiles were detected and destroyed over the northwestern part of the Black Sea by stand-by air defenses," the ministry said.
