The UN on Monday repeated its call for all those involved in conflicts in the region to “step back from the brink and to consider the unbearable human and economic cost of a potential regional conflict.”

It warned that the Middle East remains “highly volatile,” and called for the development and implementation of a clear political road map designed to resolve the conflicts that rage there.

During a meeting of the Security Council to discuss the latest escalations in the region, including the US strikes on targets in Yemen, Syria and Iraq, the under-secretary-general for political and peacebuilding affairs, Rosemarie DiCarlo, once again called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza and for the unconditional release of all Israeli hostages held by Hamas.

The UN has repeatedly warned of the danger that the Oct. 7 attacks by Hamas on Israel and the war that has followed in Gaza could spark an escalation into a wider regional conflict.

Since the Hamas attacks there have been near-daily incidents in several countries, including about 165 attacks on US targets in Syria and Iraq, prompting Washington to launch retaliatory strikes in both countries.

On Jan. 28, a drone attack killed three American personnel and injured 40 at a US military outpost in northeastern Jordan. These were the first combat fatalities among US forces related to the current regional crisis.

Washington attributed that attack to the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, and President Joe Biden vowed the US would “hold all those responsible to account at a time and in a manner of our choosing.”

A few days later, US Central Command carried out 85 retaliatory airstrikes in western Iraq and eastern Syria, targeting sites used by Iran’s Quds Force, a branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps. Washington said the attacks targeted command-and-control operations, intelligence centers and weapons facilities, and stressed it was not seeking a wider conflict in the Middle East or elsewhere.

Iran, Iraq and Syria condemned the attacks, which they said caused the deaths of 16 people in Iraq, including civilians, and 23 people affiliated with militias in Syria. Iraqi authorities summoned the US charge d’affaires in Baghdad and disputed a US claim that Washington had provided them with advance warning of the strikes.

Though the Iraqi government has reiterated that it remains committed to protecting US and other coalition forces in Iraq, DiCarlo said some armed factions linked to the “Islamic Resistance in Iraq have pledged to continue their attacks against US and coalition forces in the region.”

She told the Security Council that the wave of violence since early October has encompassed a large swath of the Middle East. She highlighted in particular the daily exchanges of fire across the blue line that separates Israel and Lebanon between the Israeli army and the Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah.

She also expressed concern about ongoing drone and missile attacks by the Houthis in Yemen and the threat they pose to international shipping in the Red Sea. She said they risk “exacerbating the conflict and further impacting international trade, as companies divert ships away from critical maritime routes.”

The US and UK have been launching strikes on Houthi positions in Yemen since Jan. 11. In the past three days alone, they hit more than 36 targets at 13 locations, including what were described as command-and-control sites.

US Airstrikes in Iraq, Syria Deliberately Stoke Conflict – Russian Envoy to UN

The United States is intentionally aggravating tensions in the Middle East with targeted airstrikes in Iraq and Syria, Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said during a United Nations Security Council meeting.

"It's clear that American airstrikes are specifically, deliberately aimed to stoke the conflict," Nebenzya said on Monday. The diplomat stressed that the US strikes on Iraq and Syria are an attempt by Washington to improve the poor image of the current administration before the presidential election.

"The largest US air operation in the region since 2003, presented by Joe Biden as an act of retaliation for a UAV attack of unidentified origin on an illegally located US base in Syria, has no justification," Nebenzya said.

"We see in this attempt to play with muscles, first of all, a desire to influence the domestic political situation in America and a desire to somehow correct the failed image of the current American administration in the international arena in light of the presidential election campaign gaining momentum," he emphasized.

Russia calls on the international community to condemn the strikes by the United States and its allies on Iraq and Syria, the official highlighted.

"We call on the international community to unequivocally condemn the reckless actions of Washington and its allies in the Middle East that violate the sovereignty of Iraq and Syria," Nebenzya said.

The recent strikes by the US and Britain on Syria and Iraq were carried out in violation of international law, the diplomat insisted.

"We thank Deputy Secretary General Rosemary DiCarlo for the briefing, we heard a lot of verbal nonsense from her, but we did not hear the most important thing -- unconditional condemnation of violations of international law by the United States and Britain," Nebenzya stressed.

US political commentator Tucker Carlson came to Moscow on February 3, amid speculation that the goal of the visit is to interview Russian President Vladimir Putin, boosting the ex-Fox News host's popularity in the country. Sputnik explores why.

In one video of Tucker Carlson meeting one of his Russian fans in Moscow, a man’s voice can be heard praising the 54-year-old conservative commentator as the “best US journalist.”

The former Fox News anchor is then seen thanking the man and lauding Moscow as a beautiful city that he had planned to visit for a long time.

But why is Carlson so popular in Russia?

Some Career Flashbacks

Fox News surprisingly announced that the company and Carlson had agreed to part ways in April last year, despite the fact that he hosted the network's top-rated program at the time.

Numerous media reports suggested that Tucker was let go due to his coverage of some controversial topics - ranging from the January 6, 2021, US Capitol breach to the COVID-19 measures to White House support for Kiev in the Ukraine conflict. Others, however, insist that Carlson was fired for his criticism of Fox News' senior management.

In early May, the ex-Fox News host took to Twitter to announce a new show on this social networking giant’s venue. Tucker added that his new program will be "a new version of the show we’ve been doing for the last six and a half years." The Tucker on Twitter show was rebranded as Tucker on X shortly after the website changed its name.

Tucker's Stance on Russia, US, Ukraine

When it comes to Carlson’s ever-increasing popularity in Russia, it’s safe to say that many Russians perceive him as a window to America, which allows them to learn about US domestic issues from sources other than the liberal press. On top of that, Carlson doesn’t hesitate to give his own thoughts on Russia as such.

In the latest development caught on a video, Tucker said that Russia is "doing very well" when meeting one of his Russian fans at what looked like a Moscow hotel.

When a Fox News host, Tucker once hinted at his attitude toward Russia and its special military operation in Ukraine, making it plain that he is rooting for Moscow.

"Why do I care … what is going on in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia? And I’m serious. Why do I care? Why shouldn’t I root for Russia, which I am?" Carlson pointed out.

Separately, the conservative commentator warned in one of his programs about the possibility of a "hot war" between the US and Russia. He urged his viewers not to discount such a scenario “no matter how far-fetched it may seem."

"Yes, that is a lunatic idea. There is nothing we could possibly gain from a military confrontation with [Russian President] Vladimir Putin and there’s very much we could lose, including of course many thousands of American lives. But that doesn’t mean [US President] Joe Biden won’t do it," Carlson said.

He also once insisted that anti-Russian sanctions that Biden painted as a "moral victory" against Putin are damaging the US while the Russian president is "winning" the bilateral standoff.

"It tells you that the loser in this policy is not Vladimir Putin, he’s the winner. It’s the United States," the television presenter asserted.

On Ukraine, Carlson minced no words when calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “sweaty and rat-like” and describing Ukraine as not “a democracy” but rather “a pure client state of the United States State Department.”

Public Popularity

Tucker remains the American journalist of choice for more than one million viewers who earlier signed up to the Russian-language YouTube channel CarlsonTV.

Many users in the comment section praised Tucker, describing him as a "straightforward person who tells the whole truth." They expressed their desire for more "brave and honest individuals like him" to be in the US, a country which rguethey a is "drowning in lies and attempting to dictate to others how they should live."

There are more than 46,000 subscribers to the CarlsonTV channel on Russia’s social media giant, VKontakte, where several users recently applauded Tucker’s decision to visit Moscow.

"Welcome to the country of a free people," "Thank you, comrade Tucker," "Wow, that's some news indeed, he has made up his mind!" some comments read.

Russian TV channels frequently include clips from Carlson's shows in their programs. This is because numerous political pundits in Russia believe that his partially pro-Russian stance, particularly regarding Ukraine and Biden, unwittingly or consciously evokes sympathy among Russian viewers. Chairman of the Union of Russian Journalists Vladimir Solovyov has meanwhile announced that Carlson will be welcomed into the organization.

Elon Musk denied using illegal drugs on Sunday, claiming “not even trace quantities” of drugs or alcohol were found in his body over three years of random drug tests, after a report in the Wall Street Journal detailed how the Tesla CEO and SpaceX founder’s drug use worries colleagues in leadership positions at his companies.

On Saturday, The Wall Street Journal published a detailed report on Musk’s drug use—which is reportedly concerning executives at SpaceX and Tesla. According to the report, Tesla board members have spoken informally about Musk’s drug use for years, and even approached his brother Kimbal Musk with concerns about his behavior.

Musk has also allegedly taken drugs with executives at his companies—sources told the Journal that Musk took recreational ketamine with his brother Kimbal, who sits on the boards of Tesla and SpaceX, as well as unnamed illegal drugs with SpaceX board member Steve Jurvetson. The newspaper also reported that former Tesla director Linda Johnson Rice left the company in 2019 due to his drug consumption and volatile behavior.

“After that one puff with Rogan, I agreed, at NASA’s request, to do 3 years of random drug testing,” Musk shared to X on Sunday, referencing his now-infamous 2018 appearance on “The Joe Rogan Experience,” where he smoked marijuana on camera with the host, which triggered backlash that sent Tesla’s stock price plummeting by as much as 9%.

The 52-year-old richest person in the world didn’t deny having used illegal drugs in the past. But in a subsequent X post on Monday, Musk said: “If drugs actually helped improve my net productivity over time, I would definitely take them!”

Musk expressed a similar sentiment to his biographer, Walter Isaacson, who released the biography, titled “Elon Musk,” in September

He told Isaacson that “SpaceX was a NASA contractor, and they are big believers in the law.”

“Fortunately, I really don’t like doing illegal drugs,” Musk is quoted as saying in the book.

Isaacson also divulged that Musk is prone to “demon-like” outbursts at work in which he lashes out at employees and executives and can “hardly remember” what happened afterward.

According to the Wall Street Journal, executives across Musk’s portfolio of companies have raised concerns that the billionaire’s “unhinged” and “cringeworthy” behavior comes from his use of cocaine, LSD, ecstasy and ketamine, all of which are illegal to possess without a prescription.

Senior figures were also concerned Musk may have been on drugs when he suddenly tweeted that in 2018, he was planning to take Tesla private, sparking an SEC prone into whether the statement was misleading or false, people familiar with the matter told The Journal.

And at a party he hosted in Los Angeles that same year, he supposedly took several tabs of acid, The Journal reported.

Also in 2018, Musk was reportedly on drugs during a media interview, during which he got emotional describing how difficult his past year had been, according to the paper, citing someone close to the father of 11.

Musk, meanwhile, has attributed his strange behavior to mental illness and lack of sleep from obsessively overseeing his companies.

He confirmed in 2017 that he has bipolar disorder, which can cause dramatic mood swings, but said he has not been diagnosed.

When The Post sought comment from The Journal, a spokesperson said: “We stand by our reporting.”

Representatives for Musk at X, SpaceX and Tesla did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.

However, Alex Spiro, an attorney for Musk, also told The Journal that his client is “regularly and randomly drug tested at SpaceX and has never failed a test.”

Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that at least two children were killed in Israeli attack on kindergarten in Rafah, southern Gaza.

The sources reported casualties, including two young children, and dozens of injuries after Israeli warplanes targeted the kindergarten, which has been used as a refuge for displaced people fleeing the Israeli aggression in other regions of the enclave

Additionally, casualties were reported, and scores were wounded after Israeli warplanes bombed a residential area in Deir Al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip.

More injuries were also reported after Israeli occupation forces targeted a house belonging to the Masran family in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza.

Israeli airstrikes also hit various areas in the city of Khan Yunis in Southern Gaza.

Israel is being accused of committing genocide in Gaza.

Houthi official Mohammed al-Bukhaiti says the Red Sea attacks will continue until Israel ends its assault on Gaza, amid Israeli air raids on Khan Younis and Rafah.

Death toll from air raids in eastern Rafah has risen to 24 people as Israel says it is planning a ground invasion of the dangerously overcrowded city.

Air attacks and shelling have also been reported in Khan Younis, including in the vicinity of the European Hospital. At least 27,365 people have been killed and 66,630 wounded in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7. The revised death toll in Israel from the October 7 Hamas attacks stands at 1,139

Worse still, the aggression has resulted in the forceful displacement of nearly 2 million people from all of the Gaza Strip, with the vast majority of the displaced forced into the densely crowded southern city of Rafah near the border with Egypt—in what has become Palestine’s largest mass exodus since the 1948 Nakba.

Carlson is known for covering controversial topics such as the US role in the 2014 coup in Ukraine and its subsequent support for the neoNazi regime installed in Kiev. He was fired from Fox News in spring 2023 – reportedly due to political pressure – and started an independent show on X (former Twitter).

American journalist and commentator Tucker Carlson has recently made headlines with his visit to Russia, sparking widespread speculation about a potential interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Carlson was spotted at the “Spartacus” ballet at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, an event that has fueled discussions across various social media platforms about the purpose of his visit.

US journalist Tucker Carlson is in Russia for the first time and has attended the iconic “Spartacus” ballet at the Bolshoi Theater, social media reports have indicated.

According to available information, the right-wing ex-Fox News host has spent three days in Moscow. The aim of his visit remains unclear.

“Please God let this be a Putin interview,” said prominent political commentator Jackson Hinkle on social media. This theory already made Washington feel a bit uneasy and some White House-aligned pundits have called for the journalist to be banned from re-entering the US. Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia slammed the Democrats for ostracizing Carlson and reminded them that freedom of speech is purportedly one of the pillars of US politics.

Earlier, Carlson admitted that he planned to interview Vladimir Putin, but was strongly advised against this move by the US government. However, he gave no further details.

The Tucker Carlson Surveillance Saga

Carlson stated that the National Security Agency (NSA) had infiltrated his Signal account, intercepting text messages about his impending trip to see Putin.

He expressed surprise and frustration at the government’s surveillance of his personal communications, raising questions about privacy rights and government oversight. This incident has added fuel to the ongoing debate about the extent of government surveillance and its implications for individual privacy.

The Intrigue Surrounding the Alleged Putin Interview

Despite the controversy surrounding the alleged surveillance, the possibility of an interview between Carlson and Putin remains a point of significant interest. A series of articles on Fox News detail Putin’s recent activities, from financial aid discussions regarding Ukraine to the construction of a compound in Karelia. Also in focus is a recently introduced bill allowing asset confiscation for spreading false information, Putin’s candidacy for the upcoming presidential election, NATO’s military exercise amid rising tensions with Russia, and the State Department’s rejection of the notion of Russia reclaiming Alaska.

Impact on U.S. Politics

The Carlson saga has also intersected with U.S. politics, particularly with the ongoing hostilities between Texas Governor Greg Abbott and the Biden administration. The root of the dispute lies in a manipulated video that falsely suggests Abbott praised Putin on Fox News.

This video, shared widely on social media, has been debunked by Newsweek’s Fact Check team. The article highlights how the Texas border dispute has become a new opportunity for Russian misinformation actors to share misleading and fake footage online.
