Hezbollah leader Syed Hassan Nasrallah addressed his followers on Friday, making his first comments on the Israel-Hamas war since it broke out on October 7.

Fighting between Hezbollah and Israel has escalated along their fraught border in recent weeks. The Lebanese armed group claims to have lost 57 fighters while Israel says that six of its soldiers have been killed in their exchange of fire and missiles. At least six civilians have also been killed.

Many expected Nasrallah to announce the group’s next moves, but he refrained from doing so, instead condemning the Israeli attacks Gaza.

Here are the key highlights from his address:

The October attack was an exclusively Palestinian operation

Nasrallah began the speech by praising “the fallen martyrs” of Hezbollah and the other groups fighting Israel, as well as the civilians killed.

He then also thanked the “strong and brave Iraqi and Yemeni hands who are now involved in this holy war,” in an apparent reference to armed groups in the two countries — including the Houthis in Yemen — who are allies of Hezbollah and have launched attacks against Israel or the United States in recent days.

He described the October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel, in which more than 1,400 people were killed, as “a big event to shake this oppressive … occupying, usurping Zionist regime and its supporters in Washington and London”.

He said the “operation was 100 percent Palestinian in terms of both decision and execution.”

“That element of secrecy was the linchpin to this emphatic success of the operation, it came as a surprise, shocking surprise, unlike what’s assumed by many.”

Independent of Iran

“This operation has no bearing on any decision or move to be taken by any other faction within the resistance axis,” Nasrallah said, referring to the Iran-led coalition of anti-Israel forces in the region.

“At any point of time when there is a battle, they start to speak about the Iranian nuclear programme, the US-Iran negotiations,” Nasrallah said

In reality, he claimed, “the secrecy surrounding the entire operation” on October 7 proved that the attack was solely about the Palestinian cause, and unrelated “to any international or regional issue”.

“Since the Iranian revolution … [Iran has] always been openly adopting and supporting resistance factions in Lebanon, Palestine and in the region. However, they do not exercise any form of authority or control over these factions or in their leadership. And what happened … proves this fact.”

US responsible for the war in Gaza

Nasrallah also blamed the US for the continuing violence in Gaza.

“Gaza and the Gazans have been reeling under the brunt of barbaric, ferocious, brutal, ruthless, merciless aerial bombardments,” he said.

He accused the US of remaining “silent” in the face of “the images of thousands of babies and children torn apart in Gaza as a result of the Israeli missiles”.

Nasrallah said the US response exposed the West’s “hypocrisy” on issues like democracy and the rule of law.

“We’re living in a jungle. We all must establish this fact. The United States is totally responsible for the war raging in Gaza, against unarmed defenceless people,” he said.

Hezbollah already in the battle since October 8th

Nasrallah said that Hezbollah entered “the war” the day after the Hamas attack happened.

“Some claim that we are about to engage in the war. I am telling you, we have been engaged in this battle since October 8,” Nasrallah said.

“The Islamic resistance in Lebanon started operation the very next day.”

“What’s taking place on our front is very important and significant,” said Nasrallah, claiming that the conflict on the border with Israel was the hottest it had been since 1948.

“Yet I assure you this will not be the end. This will not be sufficient.”

Asks for more from Arab nations

Nasrallah also made a call to other Arab countries to help Gaza.

“We are calling on the Arab and Muslim states to cut off oil and gas and food supplies from Israel,” Nasrallah said, echoing a demand made by Iran earlier this week.

He said that he hoped that “at a point of time, the whole humanity will listen to the sound of reason”.

The Ukrainian counteroffensive started on 4 June. Kiev has deployed brigades that were trained by NATO instructors and armed with Western equipment, including Leopard and Challenger tanks. In early October, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Kiev's push had failed, with Ukraine suffering casualties estimated to be more than 90,000.

The Russian Defense Ministry has released footage of the Russian crew of the Yug battlegroup attacking Ukrainian positions and armored combat vehicles near the Belogorovka settlement.

The video shows several strikes on Ukrainian military strongholds and places where personnel were stationed.

Russia Repels 5 Ukrainian Attacks in Kupyansk Direction, Eliminates 210 Troops

Russia repelled five Ukrainian attacks in the Kupyansk direction in the past 24 hours, eliminating up to 210 troops and multiple combat vehicles, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Saturday.

“Enemy losses amounted to up to 210 servicepeople, a tank, two infantry fighting vehicles and three vehicles. During counter-battery fire, a US-made M777 artillery system and two Gvozdika self-propelled artillery units were hit,” the ministry said.

Ukraine lost up to 60 soldiers in the Kherson direction, as well as six vehicles and an Msta-B howitzer, the ministry said.

In the South Donetsk direction, Russian forces repelled an attack by the Ukrainian army, destroying more than 55 servicepeople and six pieces of equipment, the ministry said.

Kiev’s top general criticized for causing ‘panic’ in West

Ukraine’s commander-in-chief Valery Zaluzhny should have kept his thoughts about the “stalemate” in the conflict with Russia to himself, Igor Zhovkva, the deputy head of President Vladimir Zelensky’s office, has said. He also lamented that Zaluzhny’s comments have rattled some of Kiev’s backers in the West.

Speaking on national TV on Friday, Zhovkva expressed his displeasure with Zaluzhny’s interview with The Economist published earlier this week. Speaking to the British magazine, the top commander, who has been in charge of the country’s military since 2021, compared the Ukraine conflict with World War I and suggested that both sides had reached a level of technological prowess that makes “a deep and beautiful breakthrough” very unlikely.

The general also pointed out that “the biggest risk of an attritional trench war is that it can drag on for years and wear down the Ukrainian state.”

Zhovkva argued that “the last thing I would do is comment for the press… about what is happening at the front [and] what could happen at the front,” adding that this kind of revelation plays right into Russia’s hands.

The official also pointed out that Zaluzhny’s comments did not go unnoticed in the West. “I received a call from one of the heads of the offices of the leaders [of partner countries], and they asked in a panic: ‘What should I report to my leader? Are you really at a dead end?’ Is this what we wanted to achieve with this article?” he asked.

The criticism of Zaluzhny came as Ukraine’s large-scale counteroffensive that has been underway since early summer has failed to gain any substantial ground. Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu has estimated Ukraine’s losses at more than 90,000 soldiers while claiming that Kiev’s troops are suffering from low morale.

Meanwhile, Time magazine reported last month that some Ukrainian officials believe that Zelensky has become “delusional” in his desire to defeat Russia at all costs. “We’re out of options. We’re not winning. But try telling him that,” one aide told the magazine. It also reported that the Ukrainian leader was looking for scapegoats after the counteroffensive failed to achieve the desired results.

The article sparked outrage in Kiev, with National Security Council chief Aleksey Danilov suggesting that those in the Ukrainian government who have any doubts about the country’s ultimate victory should be sacked.

Francesco Talo, a diplomatic adviser to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has resigned after his boss’ recent phone conversation with Russian pranksters resulted in the public release of Meloni’s unfiltered comments on the Ukraine conflict and domestic issues.

Meloni announced Talo’s resignation on Friday during a Council of Ministers’ press conference. Answering a question about the prank call, the prime minister said that she had “had a doubt,” which she shared with the diplomatic office.

However, there was “a superficiality in proceeding,” which prompted the adviser’s resignation, she added.

She called Talo’s decision “a gesture of great responsibility,” noting that his tenure of service had amounted to several decades.

Regarding her statements about fatigue over the Ukraine conflict made during the prank call, Meloni argued that she “said nothing new” and added that “public opinion, including our own, is suffering from the consequences” of it.

On Wednesday, Russian pranksters Vovan and Lexus released the recording, dated from late September, where they spoke with Meloni while posing as an unnamed African politician. During the conversation, the Italian prime minister admitted that there was “a lot of fatigue” with the Ukrainian conflict, adding it was near “the moment in which everybody understands that we need a way out.”

These revelations come amid fears that Western support for Kiev is dwindling while the world’s attention’s has turned to the war in Gaza. In an interview with The Times published on Monday, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky expressed concern that “exhaustion with the war rolls along like a wave.” “You see it in the United States, in Europe,” he claimed, adding that it “is becoming like a show for them.”

On Friday, the US House of Representatives passed a $14.3 billion aid bill for Israel that does not include support for Ukraine, despite a White House statement that President Joe Biden would veto it. At the same time, the EU failed to agree on a budget allocating €50 billion in aid to Kiev.

Ukraine conflict ‘fatigue’ is growing, Italian PM tells pranksters

There is “a lot of fatigue” with the Ukraine conflict and EU nations will soon agree that it must be resolved through a compromise, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has told a pair of Russian pranksters.

Vovan and Lexus published the clip on Wednesday of their conversation with Meloni, which reportedly dates back to September and in which they posed as an unnamed African politician.

Discussing the Ukraine conflict, the Italian leader told the pair: “I see that there is a lot of fatigue, if I have to say the truth, from all the sides. We are near the moment in which everybody understands that we need a way out.”

“The problem is to find a way out which can be acceptable for both, without destroying the international law,” Meloni added.

The conversation then shifted to Kiev’s summer counteroffensive, the outcome of which the fake African politician suggested was a far cry from what many had expected. Meloni replied that the operation was ongoing, but acknowledged that it had not changed “the destiny of the conflict.”

“Everybody understands that it really could last many years, if we don’t try to find some solution,” Meloni stated. She then expressed concern that a badly-designed solution could trigger further conflicts, before criticizing what previously unfolded in Libya.

The North African nation was rocked by a NATO-backed anti-government uprising in 2011 which ousted longtime ruler Muammar Gaddafi. More than a decade later, Libya remains split among warring factions and is economically devastated.

The North African nation was rocked by a NATO-backed anti-government uprising in 2011 which ousted longtime ruler Muammar Gaddafi. More than a decade later, Libya remains split among warring factions and is economically devastated.

Italy has been the destination for a flow of illegal migrants departing from Libya and crossing the Mediterranean Sea in the hope of receiving shelter in the EU. Meloni accused Brussels of not doing enough to help Rome as she discussed the issue at length with the pranksters.

The conversation also touched on European energy security and how developing energy production in Africa could improve it. “We are going to an era when we can’t manage it no more. It’s already too late,” Meloni said.

Later on Wednesday, Meloni’s office said the phone call had taken place on September 18, ahead of meetings with African leaders at the UN General Assembly. It said it regretted that the prime minister had been deceived by a prankster posing as the head of the African Union Commission, Reuters reported.

Vovan and Lexus, whose real names are Vladimir Kuznetsov and Aleksey Stolyarov, have been pranking public figures for years with fake calls from people their targets trust. The pair usually goad their targets into saying things they might otherwise be unwilling to make public.

At least 12 persons have been killed in an airstrike by the Israeli forces on a school operated by the United Nations in Gaza, the Hamas-run health ministry of the besieged region said on November 4.

The Al-Fakhoura school, which was reportedly attacked by Israel, is located in the Jabalia refugee camp in the northern portion of the Gaza Strip. The school was being used as a shelter home for persons displaced by the conflict.

Over a dozen persons have died and several more have been wounded in the air strike on the school, Mohammad Abu Selmeyah, the head of al-Shifa Hospital, was reported as saying.

Pictures shared by news agencies on social media showed patches of blood, injured persons, broken furnitures and other belongings at the site of the attack.

"People were preparing breakfast, when suddenly bombing started. I found my two girls, one of them was martyred and her head was hit, the second was wounded in her leg... the other girl as well was wounded with shrapnel," news agency Reuters quoted a person as saying in one of the clips that emerged after the attack.

"So far, 12 people have been killed, 54 injured in the strike on the Al-Fakhoora school," the spokesman told the Al Jazeera broadcaster.

They Dreamed of Living in Peace: Gaza Teacher Mourns Students Killed by Israeli Strikes

Several weeks ago, Ruwaida Amer, a science teacher in southern Gaza, was enjoying days helping young school children craft science projects, taking an occasional selfie in the playground with a few of her joyful students, but all those moments have turned into distant memories crumbling under another cycle of another war.

The escalation of the conflict has resulted in thousands of people killed and injured on both sides, but an overwhelming majority of those killed are Palestinian. Gaza's Health Ministry said over 9,000 have been killed in the strip since the operation began. UNICEF earlier this week said at least 3,500 children are among the dead.

"I have lost many of my students, three of them between ages 10 and 13 age," Amer, 32, told Sputnik. "I have learned that they were killed in the war as a result of the Israeli bombing on Gaza. These children dreamed of a different future. They dreamed of living in peace."

The children, Amer recalls, are terrified of the sounds of planes and missiles, something that has become all too familiar to them over the years.

Gaza residents have been living under a massive Israeli bombardment for nearly one month in the ongoing Gaza war. Israel aims to oust the Palestinian Hamas movement as a result of the attacks carried out on October 7, but the airstrikes seem to have had little effect as rocket fire continues towards Israel.

"Israel does not warn citizens before bombing homes, but it suddenly drops missiles on them while they are sleeping," Amer, who also lost her neighbors during the attacks, said. "The large number of martyrs are children, entire families were wiped out from the civil registry, while some families left one child alone, an orphan."

Amer said she specifically thinks about the fate of 7-year-old Odeh Abu Akar, who is now an orphan after an Israeli bomb hit his house, killing his entire immediate family members.

"Every day he misses his family and searches for his mother and father," Amer said. "He does not want to sleep or eat without his mother by his side, but his relatives try to console and support him."

Humanitarian Situation

Israel has Gaza under a siege that has created a dire humanitarian crisis for the millions of Palestinians living in the enclave.

"There is no water, no electricity, no fuel, and no food. How can the citizens of Gaza live without these basic needs? It is an unjust and massive siege," Amer said. "Citizens are trying to get water for washing and using toilets. Israel has cut off water from Gaza."

Gaza residents, according to Amer, must rely on wells that are pumped for water once a week to provide to the communities. The lack of electricity impedes the ability of medical providers in Gaza to care for the injured, Amer said.

"The power outage has led to a deterioration in the health sector," Amer said. "The European Gaza Hospital suffers from power outages that affect providing its health services inside the hospital. What may save the hospital is the availability of solar energy, which facilitates the work during the day, but at night it does not work."

Moreover, Amer mentioned that the two-day communications blackout on October 27 also added to the everyday struggle Gazans are facing in the war.

"The isolation from the world was also ugly, as if it was a deliberate plan to kill the Palestinians without being seen by the world. This is what the citizens of Gaza thought," Amer said. "That was a difficult moment."

Although thousands of Gaza residents were able to escape "destruction and death" after fleeing the northern Gaza Strip ahead of the Israeli invasion and intensified bombardment, they continue to face inhumane conditions, according to Amer.

One of them is Rawan Saed, 35, who recently fled from Gaza City to a school in Al-Fokhari School with her five children, Amer said.

Saed told Amer Israelis dropped leaflets in areas in northern Gaza warning people to evacuate to the city of Kahn Yunis. Saed, along with her husband and children, fled to the city of Khan Yunis and settled at an UNRWA-run school. Residents in the area provided Saed and her family with mattresses and blankets they could use to sleep in a classroom.

Saed, as quoted by Amer, said: "We cannot use the toilets adequately, I had not showered since the beginning of the war until now, and I feel mentally and physically very tired... My children cannot sleep because of the crowded place and the noise here. I try to provide food for them, but there is no way to cook here."

Saed also worries about the psychological trauma of her five children.

"All my children are young, the oldest one of them is 12 years old and they have involuntary urination due to the intense sounds of bombing and missiles," Saed said as quoted by Amer. "They are afraid of any sound next to them. They do not like the night at all and cannot sleep during it. Two days ago, I left them to draw and then found them drawing the house and garden and dreaming of returning to their home."
