Two people were arrested after some 250 pro-Palestine protesters surrounded a Vancouver restaurant where Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was dining on Tuesday night, police said.

According to Vancouver Police Department spokesman Steve Addison, 100 officers were deployed to disperse the crowd while Trudeau was escorted out of an unnamed eatery in Chinatown.

An officer was hospitalized after a protester punched her and had gouged her eyes, Addison said. Police used a Taser to subdue the 27-year-old suspect, who remains in custody. The second man was arrested for obstructing police and later released.

Earlier on Tuesday, the PM was accosted by protesters at an Indian restaurant in a different part of the city. A video posted to social media shows activists confronting Trudeau when he was sitting at the table. They called for a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip, chanting “Shame on you!” and “Justin Trudeau, you fund genocide!” The PM quickly left the premises without interacting with the activists.

Charlotte Kates, an organizer with the Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network who attended both protests, told reporters that activists demanded that Canada “take a real position” on Israel’s military operation in Gaza.

Trudeau on Tuesday urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “exercise maximum restraint” in the bombardment of Gaza, which has killed over 11,000 Palestinians, according to Gazan officials. Israel declared war on Hamas on October 7 in response to a raid by the militant group which left 1,200 Israelis dead.

Netanyahu rejected Trudeau’s criticism, maintaining that the Israeli army does not deliberately target civilians and insisting that Hamas bears the responsibility for all deaths in Gaza.

Vancouver police say an officer was injured after scuffles with protesters outside a restaurant in the city's Chinatown where the prime minister was dining on Tuesday night.

Vancouver Police Department (VPD) Sgt. Steve Addison said in a statement that 100 officers were deployed around 10 p.m. PT "after protesters surrounded a restaurant."

He said Justin Trudeau was inside the restaurant at the time and officers helped control the crowd so the prime minister could be escorted out.

Videos posted online show police creating space on a sidewalk and street as Trudeau walked out and got into a vehicle and was driven away. Protesters chant, "ceasefire now," and hold Palestine flags

Addison said police estimated 250 protesters were at the restaurant, which he did not name. He said the establishment was on Main Street, near Keefer Street, and that about 150 people were in front of the restaurant, while another 100 were behind it.

"It became a security concern for us," he told CBC News, describing that barricades were being set up and people were locking arms. Police called the protest spontaneous, meaning VPD was not advised about it beforehand.

Other videos posted online appear to show Trudeau leaving a different restaurant on Tuesday after protesters entered the premises and called for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war.

Pro-Palestine protests are ignored by the Western elite, and it may be a fatal mistake

By Bradley Blankenship
an American journalist, columnist and political commentator

In recent days, there has been a wave of pro-Palestine protests across the world as violence in Gaza escalates in the wake of an Israeli invasion and bombing campaign that has killed thousands, including many women and children, in response to the deadly terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7. One of the key questions is, will this actually amount to any change in so-called Western democracies that are standing behind Israel’s onslaught?

It depends on the country; however, largely, the answer is no – at least for the countries that have the most pull over Israel’s position. In the United States, lawmakers from the ruling Democratic Party are reportedly ducking calls from concerned constituents who are calling for a ceasefire. President Joe Biden, when asked by reporters if there was any possibility for a halt to the violence, said, “None. No possibility.”

This is worrying because, in principle, in a democracy, politicians are supposed to respond to the will of constituents. They are also supposed to bend to popular will, given that their electoral odds hinge on the opinions of voters. Arab Americans, including in key swing states, are fed up with the Biden administration’s policies in general – but also particularly with its dealings with Israel. Support for Biden among them now stands at a mere 17%, and 40% are inclined to vote for Republican former President Donald Trump in the 2024 election, according to a poll conducted by the Arab American Institute.

Massive protests, calls for voters, and the very real possibility that Biden’s position on Israel could forfeit the upcoming 2024 presidential election to Trump, the likely Republican Party nominee, show that Western democracy – especially in the US – is in shambles. When politicians ignore popular will, it shows that there is a serious crisis with the ordinary function of supposedly democratic institutions.

At the same time, it must be noted that Biden has not shied away from his pro-Israel leanings. To quote then-Senator Joe Biden, a self-described Zionist, from 1986, “There’s no apology to be made [for supporting Israel]. None. It is the best three-billion-dollar investment we make. Were there not an Israel, the United States of America would have to invent an Israel to protect her interests in the region.”

Still, as a unity president (at least in theory), Biden has a responsibility to shirk ideology in order to preserve democracy – especially when it is under full-scale assault by an opposition party that casts doubt on the legitimacy of elections and does not believe Biden was rightfully elected. The fact that he is staying firm on his position with Israel, despite protests from his own party and reportedly his own staff, is a grave mistake.

The situation in Europe is also more nuanced. Here we are seeing countries, like the Czech Republic and Hungary, remain steadfast in their unwavering support for Israel despite some opposition, and the former has even outlawed pro-Palestine demonstrations.

Tedros Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), calls the Israeli raid on al Shifa Hospital inn Gaza “totally unacceptable.”

Thousands are fleeing al-Shifa but reports and videos are emerging from the hospital, where hundreds of patients, including babies, remain trapped during an ongoing raid by Israeli troops.

The hospital has ran out of fuel, and is no longer considered operational, creating a catastrophic situtation for patients and staff, sparking international criticsm against the IDF.

“Hospitals are not battlegrounds. We’re extremely worried for the safety of staff and patients.” says Ghebreyesus.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a press conference in Geneva that patients and staff must be protected even if hospitals were used for military purposes.

"Hospitals are not battlegrounds," he said. "Israel's military incursion into Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City is totally unacceptable."

The WHO, a U.N. agency, also said it was "urgently exploring" the possibility for evacuating patients and medical staff from the facility.

"To make sure this can be enabled, of course there is a need for safe passage and also for fuel for the ambulances," said Rik Peeperkorn, WHO representative in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Peeperkorn said that according to their latest information, 34 of 39 premature infants in the hospital were still alive, and 82 bodies had been buried in a mass grave in the grounds.

A further 80 bodies remained unburied, he said, and there was no oxygen, power or water at the hospital. There are 633 patients there in total, plus around 500 staff and up to 4,000 people sheltering in the hospital grounds, he added.

Tedros, who earlier on Wednesday had said the WHO had lost touch with health personnel at Shifa, said the organization had no reports of the numbers of deaths and injuries in Gaza more broadly for the last three days, making it harder to assess the state of the healthcare system there.

He said one WHO staff member had described it as: "No water, no electricity, only bombing, bombing, bombing..."

At the press conference, Tedros also reiterated calls for a ceasefire and better access for aid into Gaza, as well as for the release of Israeli hostages being held there by Hamas.

The WHO's chief legal expert, Steve Solomon, said health facilities were always under the protection of international law.

Watch Russian Airborne Troops Destroy Ukrainian Strongholds in Artemovsk Direction

The Russian Armed Forces are continuing to modernize and improve their weapons and military hardware in order to meet the requirements of modern combat.

The Russian Defense Ministry has published footage of Airborne Troops' ZPU-4 and S-60 anti-aircraft guns destroying Ukrainian positions in the Artemovsk (Bakhmut) direction. According to the ministry, Russian servicemen destroyed dozens of enemy positions with 14.5 mm ZPU-4 and 57 mm S-60 anti-aircraft guns.

For maneuverability and rapid movement on the battlefield, antiaircraft systems have been mounted on Ural truck chassis, the Defense Ministry added.

Watch Russia’s Giatsint-S Self-Propelled Artillery Guns in Combat Action in Kupyansk Direction

The Russian Giatsint-S is a formidable self-propelled artillery system. It is known for its immense firepower and long-range capabilities. The Giatsint-S can deliver devastating blows to enemy targets.

The Russian Defense Ministry has released footage of Russia’s Giatsint-S self-propelled artillery guns in action in Kupyansk direction.

After the aerial reconnaissance unit locates groups of troops and enemy equipment, their coordinates are transmitted to the artillery crew of the Giatsint-S self-propelled artillery installation. The combat vehicle then moves into position and opens fire on the identified enemy targets.

The Giatsint-S self-propelled artillery units of the Western Military District carry out precision strikes against enemy positions in the Kupyansk direction around the clock, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

The artillery crews of the Giatsint-S artillery are destroying military facilities, fortifications and enemy personnel. The artillerymen's combat work is notable not only for its accuracy, but also for its speed: it takes only a few minutes from receiving the target coordinates to firing a shot, the ministry said.

Russia Repels 5 Attacks in Donetsk Direction, Kiev Loses Up to 300 Soldiers - Ministry

The Russian military has repelled five Ukrainian attacks in the Donetsk direction, and the Ukrainian Armed Forces have lost up to 300 soldiers killed and wounded, a spokesperson for Russia's Yug Group of Forces, Vadim Astafyev, has told Sputnik.

"In the Donetsk direction, units of the Yug Group of Forces, supported by artillery fire and aviation, successfully repelled five attacks of the 22nd and 24th Mechanized Brigades of the Ukrainian armed forces in areas of [the villages of] Maloilinevka and Klishcheevka, and defeated the manpower and equipment of the 30th Mechanized Brigade in the areas of [the villages of] Vasukovka and Kurdiumovka," Astafyev said, adding that Kiev has lost up to 300 soldiers killed and wounded in this direction, as well as two armored fighting vehicles and three pickup trucks.

The Ukrainian counteroffensive began on June 4. Kiev sent into battle brigades trained by NATO instructors and armed with Western equipment, including Leopard and Challenger tanks. Three months later, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that Kiev's push had failed and that Ukraine had suffered heavy casualties. Several Western officials also acknowledged that the Ukrainian counteroffensive had not been successful so far.

On November 1, Ukrainian commander-in-chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi said that Kiev's counteroffensive had reached a "stalemate".

Russian Special Forces Crush 'Brazen' Ukrainian IFV Near Atremovsk

The Ukrainian counteroffensive kicked off in June, with Kiev sending in NATO-trained brigades armed with Western equipment. In October, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the Zelensky regime's push had failed, racking up an estimated 90,000 Ukrainian casualties.

The ‘Siberia’ special forces of Battlegroup Yug achieved a significant victory after successfully neutralizing an impudent enemy infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) that had been incessantly attacking the Russian Armed Forces near Kleshcheyevka in the direction of Artemovsk (Bakhmut). The commander of the detachment recollected the tireless efforts of his soldiers during the 'hunt', which culminated in the destruction of the brazen IFV.

According to the commander, the detachment initiated a search for the IFV. After carefully analyzing the enemy's movements for several days, the command determined the optimal location to launch an attack using the anti-tank missile system.

“Our position was planned in advance, we lied in wait, and the enemy made a mistake, drove out and began to fire upon our units from a concealed location, and they got swiftly punished," the commander elaborated.

He also mentioned that the command had chosen the position based on intelligence data and personal experience with the enemy's operational methods. The Defense Ministry reported on Wednesday, that during the day the Russian military repelled five attacks by Ukrainian forces in the area of Kleshcheyevka and Maloilyinovka, destroying two armored combat vehicles and three pickup trucks. According to the military authorities, Kiev lost as many as 300 servicemen.
