Ukraine Loses Entire Assault Unit While Storming Russian Positions in DPR

Russian troops earlier successfully repelled four Ukrainian assault unit attacks in the settlements of Severnoye, Maryinka and Kleshcheevka outside Donetsk.

Ukraine has lost a whole assault unit comprising of 10 officers as they attempted to attack Russian positions in the village of Kleshcheevka near Artemovsk (Bakhmut) in the Donetsk People’s Republic.

A video obtained by Sputnik shows the aftermath of the failed Ukrainian attack, with Russian fighters displaying captured arms, while the bodies of the dead Ukrainian soldiers can be seen nearby.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that the settlement of Kleshcheevka near Artemovsk (Bakhmut) is under the full control of the Ukrainian Army. Apty Alaudinov, commander of the Russian Akhmat Special Forces Regiment, for his part, said that although the Ukrainian Army had been suffering heavy losses, they did not give up trying to seize Kleshcheevka. However, things are stable and well-monitored, he added.

Denis Pushilin, acting head of the Donetsk People's Republic, earlier noted that Kleshcheevka and Andreevka are now in the so-called "gray zone" – Ukrainian troops failed to strengthen their positions there, as the Russian Army maintains fire control over the area.

Russia Carried Out 12 Strikes on Ukrainian Infrastructure Over Past Week

Russia carried out 12 strikes on infrastructure supplying the Ukrainian military over the past week, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Saturday.

📹 Russia's high-precision weapons strike destroyed (0:03) a temporary deployment point of the Ukrainian Armed Forces with personnel in the Kherson region

"From September 17 to 23, the Russian armed forces carried out 12 collective strikes using ground- and air-based long-range precision weapons and drones on facilities engaged in aviation and armored vehicle repairs, oil refineries, warehouses of munitions, precision weapons and foreign-made weapons, intelligence centers and sabotage training centers, as well as accommodation centers of foreign mercenaries," the ministry said in a weekly recap.

The strikes inflicted significant damage upon the Ukrainian military's supply networks in the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, in particular, the statement read.

The Russian Defense Ministry has issued the following statements on the Ukraine crisis:

  • The Russian Armed Forces repelled 28 enemy attacks in the DPR in the period from September 17 to 23. Over the past week, as a result of air, missile and artillery strikes in this direction, the enemy's losses amounted to more than 1,455 Ukrainian servicemen killed and wounded, 16 tanks and other armored combat vehicles, 25 motor vehicles, 15 field artillery pieces, and three MLRS combat vehicles.

  • In the direction of south Donetsk, Russian units have repelled five enemy attacks in concerted action over the past week, continuing to defeat concentrations of enemy personnel and hardware. Enemy losses in this direction amounted to over 950 Ukrainian servicemen killed and wounded, 14 armored combat vehicles, 32 motor vehicles and five field artillery pieces. In addition, two ammunition dumps were destroyed.

  • Russian troops repelled eight Ukrainian attacks in the Zaporozhye region. During the fighting, more than 515 Ukrainian servicemen, 24 armored combat vehicles and 19 motor vehicles were destroyed. In addition, 35 pieces of enemy field artillery were neutralized in the course of counter-battery fire.

  • The enemy losses in the Krasny Liman direction amounted to up to 435 Ukrainian servicemen killed and wounded, 15 armored combat vehicles, 16 motor vehicles and eight guns.

  • In the direction of Kherson, the enemy made unsuccessful attempts to seize bridgeheads on the islands and the left bank of the Dnepr. During the military operations, the Ukrainian Armed Forces lost up to 445 Ukrainian soldiers, nine armored combat vehicles, 35 motor vehicles, 11 field artillery guns. In addition, eight sabotage and reconnaissance groups were disabled.

  • During the week, the enemy attempted to attack facilities on the Crimean Peninsula with cruise missiles and UAVs. In the course of repelling the attacks, the Russian air defense systems destroyed five cruise missiles, one Neptun anti-ship missile and 37 attack drones.

  • The Russian Armed Forces' fighter jets and air defense systems destroyed the following aircraft last week: Su-24m, Mig-29 and two Su-25 ground attack aircraft of the Ukrainian Air Forces.

  • During the week, air defense and electronic warfare systems shot down and suppressed 257 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles and intercepted 46 HIMARS MLRS rounds, nine Storm Shadow cruise missiles, two JDAM air-to-air bombs and three HARM anti-radiation missiles.

  • During the special military operation, an astonishing number of military assets were destroyed. These include 477 aircraft, 249 helicopters, 7,067 unmanned aerial vehicles, 438 air defense missile systems, 12,071 tanks and other armored combat vehicles, 1,154 MLRS-equipped combat vehicles, 6,502 field artillery guns and mortars, and 13,351 pieces of special military equipment.

The United States and its allies continue to fuel international conflicts, stoke tensions on the Korean Peninsula and engage in acts of brinkmanship, such as staging joint drills that involve the use of nuclear weapon scenarios on Russian territory, Moscow's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Saturday.

The United States and European powers have a habit of not fulfilling their obligations, with the West essentially being an “empire of lies,” Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said during his address at the UN General Assembly.

“Having grown accustomed to looking down on the rest of the world, the Americans and the Europeans keep making promises and taking on obligations, including those of the written and legally binding variety, and then simply do not fulfill them. As Russian President Vladimir Putin previously said, the West is a veritable ‘empire of lies’,” Lavrov said.

The Russian foreign minister also took note of the sentiment voiced by several other speakers who addressed the UN General Assembly before him, about the world undergoing irreversible changes.

“A new world order is being born before our very eyes,” he remarked. “The outlines of the future are being created in the struggle between the global majority, that seeks a fairer distribution of global riches and a civilizational diversity, and those few who use neocolonial methods of subjugation to retain their vanishing domination.”

The inability to negotiate and refusal to accept the principles of equality have long become the West’s trademark of sorts, Lavrov added.

"A series of recent joint exercises between the United States and European NATO allies, including scenarios involving the use of nuclear weapons on the territory of Russia, has been unprecedented since the end of the Cold War," Lavrov said during his address at the UN General Assembly.

“The declared goal is to inflict a “strategic defeat” on Russia, and this obsession has completely blinded the eyes of irresponsible politicians who feel a sense of their own impunity, while at the same time losing an elementary sense of self-preservation,” Lavrov added.

US, Western Allies Continue to Fuel Conflicts

The United States and its Western allies continue to fuel international conflicts that divide the world.

"For Russia, it is obvious that there is no other way. However, the United States and its subordinate 'Western collective' continue to fuel conflicts that artificially divide humanity into hostile blocs and prevent the achievement of common goals. They are doing everything to prevent the formation of a truly multipolar, just world order," Lavrov said during his address at the UN General Assembly.

The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry recalled that in 2021, Russian proposals for mutual security guarantees in Europe without changing the non-bloc status of Ukraine were “arrogantly rejected.” “The West continued to systematically militarize the Russophobic Kiev regime, which was brought to power as a result of a bloody coup and was used to prepare for the outbreak of a hybrid war against our country,” the minister noted.

As Lavrov emphasized, Western leaders have never been embarrassed that NATO’s approach to the borders of the Russian Federation grossly violates the OSCE commitments taken at the highest level not to strengthen their own security at the expense of others, and also not to allow military-political dominance in Europe by any country or group countries or organizations. “The Soviet and then Russian leadership were given specific political assurances regarding the non-expansion of the NATO military bloc to the east. The corresponding records of the negotiations are in our and Western archives. They are freely available. But these assurances of Western leaders turned out to be a deception; they had no intention of fulfilling them,” the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted.

On Situation in the Balkans

The sad story of the non-fulfillment of the Minsk agreements on the Donbass republics is repeating itself with Serbia and Kosovo, Lavrov said.

"The whole world sees how the sad history of the Minsk agreements on Ukraine, which envisioned a special status for the Donbass republics and which Kiev openly sabotaged with Western support, is repeating itself in the Balkans. And now the European Union does not want to force its Kosovo proteges to implement the 2013 agreements between Belgrade and Pristina on the creation of the Community of Serbian Municipalities of Kosovo, which has special rights to its language and traditions," he stated.

"NATO providing arms and assistance to the Albanians of Kosovo in building an army of their own is a gross violation of the fundamental resolution 1244 of the UN Security Council," Lavrov remarked.

He also criticized the incessant attempts by the “Western minority” to “Ukrainize” the agenda of international discussions and thus effectively put on a back burner matters related to a number of “unresolved regional crises, many of which drag on for years and even decades.”

On Situation in the Korean Peninsula

Russia is concerned by the fact that the US and its allies are escalating the situation on the Korean Peninsula, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Saturday.

"The escalation of military hysteria by Washington and its Asian allies on the Korean Peninsula, where US strategic capabilities are accumulating, is alarming. Russian-Chinese initiatives to prioritize humanitarian and political tasks are rejected," Lavrov said during his address at the UN General Assembly.

Influence of Global South Growing

The United States and its allies should recognize the real economic and financial weight of the Global South countries, Russia's top diplomat said.

"Overall, there is an urgent need to reform the existing global governance architecture as soon as possible. It has long failed to meet the requirements of the era. The United States and its allies should abandon artificial restraints on the redistribution of voting quotas in the IMF [International Monetary Fund] and the World Bank, recognizing the real economic and financial weight of the countries of the Global South. The work of the WTO [World Trade Organization] Dispute Settlement Body should also be immediately unblocked," Lavrov said during his address at the UN General Assembly.

US and EU Destabilizing South Caucasus

The European Union and the United States are destabilizing the region of the South Caucasus, trying to enforce their mediation upon Armenia and Azerbaijan.

"Now Brussels is imposing its 'mediation services' on Azerbaijan and Armenia, bringing destabilization to the South Caucasus together with Washington," the top Russian diplomat said at the UN General Assembly.

He added that Russian peacekeepers will contribute in every possible way to the de-escalation and establishment of peaceful life in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Russian forces delivered 12 combined strikes on facilities for the repair of Ukrainian aircraft as well as foreign mercenaries’ deployment points in the past week, partially wiping out Western cruise missiles and depleted uranium munitions donated to Ukraine, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

"Between September 17 and September 23, 2023, Russian forces delivered 12 combined strikes, using ground-based and airborne high-precision weapons as well as unmanned aerial vehicles, on facilities for the repair of aircraft and tanks, oil refineries, depots for ammunition, high-precision weapons and foreign-made armaments, as well as reconnaissance and sabotage training centers and foreign mercenaries’ deployment points," the Russian defense agency said.

Russian Reconnaissance Team Destroys Leopard Tank in Special Op Zone With Fully-German Crew

A Russian reconnaissance team has destroyed a German-supplied Leopard tank of the Ukrainian military with a crew comprised of Bunderswehr soldiers in the Zaporozhye direction, the team lead with the moniker Legend told Sputnik on Saturday.

"When we curbed another offensive and ATGM-ed [destroyed with an anti-tank guided missile] the Leopard, we moved out to the burned vahicle hoping to seize the 'tongue.' Then we saw that the crew's driver-mechanic was severely injured and the others were dead. Once he awoke, the mechanic started yelling 'nicht schießen' ["do not shoot" in German]," the head of the reconnaissance team said.

"The mechanic repeatedly stated that he was not a mercenary but a Bundeswehr serviceman, and that he and the rest of the crew were members of the same unit of the German army," the Russian fighter said, adding that while receiving medical aid, the German soldier named his brigade and its dislocation site.

The tank's driver died from wounds minutes after he was found despite efforts to save him.

Watch Russian Grad MLRS in Combat in Special Op Zone

Russian Armed Forces are successfully repelling counteroffensive attempts by Ukraine using top-tier military equipment, including multiple launch rocket systems.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense has published footage that shows Grad MLRS operated by the Pacific Fleet Marine Corps performing a mission as part of the special military operation.

Grad was designed as a destroyer of hostile manpower, artillery and enemy-controlled outposts. Shockwave and shrapnel from its projectiles usually spread over hundreds of meters, wreaking havoc in enemy positions.

Grad crews usually work hand-in-hand with UAV operators who use their drones to locate the targets. MLRS must be in constant movement – after a successful hit, the Grad and his crew must be quickly relocated in order to avoid return fire.

Sputnik brings you the latest insights from Scott Ritter – former US Marine intel officer and UN weapons inspector – where he explains why the US Army is not ready for the full-scale war against Russia based on the failed Ukrainian counteroffensive attempt.

War is hell.

Before the Ukrainian conflict began, the US Army, drawing upon Cold War estimates, assessed in the 2019 edition of Field Manual (FM) 4-0 (Sustainment Operations) that US Army theater medical planners “may anticipate a sustained rate of roughly 3,600 casualties per day, ranging from those killed in action to those wounded in action or suffering disease or other non-battle injuries”, putting the US Army on track to lose some 50,000 casualties in two weeks of sustained combat operations against a Russian-style threat.

Are these numbers realistic? Ask Ukraine. In the lead up to the current counteroffensive, Ukraine built up three brigades-worth of troops (around 20,000 soldiers) along with another nine brigades (some 37,000 troops) trained and equipped by NATO, all of which were slated to participate in the main offensive effort in and around the village of Rabotino, in southern Zaporozhye.

These forces were supplemented by an additional 40,000 territorial forces formed into eight so-called “shock brigades” intended to be deployed offensively in the vicinity of the city of Artemovsk (Bakhmut). The total number of Ukrainian troops mobilized and trained specifically for the counteroffensive was just under 100,000 men.

Back in January 2023—five months before the start of the current counteroffensive, and two months before the Battle of Artemovsk (Bakhmut), US General Christopher Cavoli, the commander of US and NATO forces in Europe, told an audience at an Oslo defense forum that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine “out of proportion with all of our [NATO] recent thinking,” adding that “the magnitude of this war is incredible.” Cavoli spoke of artillery expenditure rates by the Russian Army that exceeded, on average, 20,000 rounds per day. Violence begets violence, and with this much high explosive being sent down range, the Ukrainians were certain to be sustaining very high losses.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking to the Eastern Economic Forum, stated that in the three months that have transpired since the Ukrainian counteroffensive was begun, Ukraine had suffered some 71,000 casualties (killed and wounded), or roughly seven out of every 10 men participating.

This number is consistent with a statement made by a Ukrainian official responsible for the mobilization of troops in the Poltava Region, which indicated that 80-90 out of every 100 men mobilized become casualties in this conflict. Calculating that roughly 90 days transpired between the start of the Ukrainian counteroffensive and Putin’s comments, this means that Ukraine was losing around 790 casualties per day.

A Russian serviceman is seen in the course of Russia's military operation in Ukraine, at the unknown location. - Sputnik International, 1920, 10.09.2023 Russia's Special Operation in Ukraine US Casts Doubt on Tank Supplies to Ukraine as Russia Wipes Out West's Armor - Report 10 September, 07:35 GMT The US Army currently has approximately 100,000 troops deployed to Europe, around 40,000 of which are organized into combat units expected to bear the brunt of the fighting. If these troops were subject to casualty rates approximating those sustained by Ukraine in the prosecution of its counteroffensive, the US Army would exhaust its combat power within 50 days.

Of course, this calculation is misleading since it speaks of 100% casualty rates. According to US Army doctrine, if a unit is at 50 to 69 percent strength, it becomes combat ineffective, meaning it is no longer capable of accomplishing its assigned mission. The reality is that US combat forces subjected to the level of violence experienced by Ukraine at the hands of the Russians would become combat ineffective after around 2 weeks of fighting.

An argument can be made that, given the qualitative superiority of the US military over their Ukrainian counterparts, the overall level of lethality being experienced by the Ukrainian military would be mitigated to a large extent, meaning that the US Army should not suffer attrition rates that match those experienced by the Ukrainian forces. This might be true if the conditions on the battlefield were equitable—namely, that the US found itself in a quasi-positional conflict with well-delineated lines of contact with the enemy, and access to fortified defensive positions.

The reality is, however, that any US-Russian conflict will involve what is known as a “meeting engagement”, with two opposing forces engaged in a more fluid battle where the precise make up of forces and the specific terrain features will not be defined until after the lead elements of each force make initial contact. In a meeting engagement, issues of firepower and maneuver dominate, and the side that is able to employ both more efficiently than the other will most likely prevail.

Unfortunately for the US Army, it is Russia that will have the advantage in such an encounter. Maneuver warfare requires the careful choreography of fire and maneuver.

Fire is an essential aspect of this—the need to suppress enemy fires and interrupt enemy movement is far more important than inflicting casualties. The US has long relied upon precision fires to offset mass. Precision fires, however, require situational awareness in terms of the enemy’s disposition, something that can only take place via real-time communications.

The methodologies currently employed by the US have been perfected over the course of the past two decades while engaged in low-intensity conflicts where the US forces operated in a permissive environment regarding hostile electronic warfare capabilities. Against a Russian opponent, the seamless communications and the transfer of data that underpins US fire and maneuver schemes will be largely neutralized by Russian electronic warfare capabilities, leaving the US deaf, dumb, and blind when it comes to disposition of Russian forces.

In an environment where speed and alacrity are the cornerstones of victory, the US will find itself lethargic and unresponsive, unable to coordinate effectively on the most rudimentary of tasks. Russia will be able to exploit its significant advantage in artillery firepower to disrupt and destroy the US ability to place effective firepower on the Russian target, and to impede US efforts at maneuvering in reaction to Russian advances. The result will be the total collapse of the US forces involved in the meeting engagement, leading to their retreat and ultimate destruction.

The magnitude of the US defeat will be increased by the difficulties associated with logistically supporting large quantities of US forces in the field. Manuever requires more movement, and movement requires fuel. The US will be confronted with uncertain fuel supplies and vulnerable lines of communication which, once subjected to Russia interdiction, will prevent the sustainment of whatever maneuver efforts the US might be able to undertake. Russia should be able to isolate individual units, threatening them with destruction and prompting their disintegration or surrender.

In such a battle, the US could easily find itself burning through a Brigade’s worth of troops every two days—the very 3,600 casualty figures predicted by the US Army in 2019. At this rate, the US could very well find its entire European force made combat ineffective after only approximately one week of sustained combat. The rapid defeat of US Army forces in Europe would resonate throughout NATO, resulting in a precipitous decline in morale which could result in the total collapse of the forces engaged in combat operations against Russia. Again, General Cavoli’s words resonate—the violence associated with modern large-scale ground combat is “out of proportion” to the thinking taking place in NATO and US planning circles. Simply put, neither the US nor NATO are prepared to engage in large-scale combat operations against a peer-level opponent such as Russia.

War is hell.

But its even more so when you are completely unprepared for its awful reality.

How Russian Peacekeepers Stopped Hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh

Azerbaijan and representatives of the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh ceased hostilities on September 20 through the mediation of Russian peacekeepers, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.

An agreement was reached between Baku and representatives of Nagorno-Karabakh on Wednesday on a complete cessation of hostilities in the region. The implementation of these agreements will be carried out in coordination with the Russian peacekeeping contingent, as per the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Earlier, on September 19, Baku announced the launch of "local-level anti-terrorist activities" in Nagorno-Karabakh – an unrecognized republic regarded by Azerbaijan as its territory – aimed at "restoring the constitutional order." Azerbaijan accused the Armenians of violating Paragraph 4 of the agreements signed in November 2020 by Armenia and Azerbaijan through the mediation of Russia, beefing up their military presence in Nagorno-Karabakh, transferring ammunition, and mining, which resulted in casualties among both military and civilians.

Yerevan denied the accusations and denounced Baku's actions as "aggression," at the same time making it clear that the Armenian Armed Forces would not repel the Azerbaijan advance. The crux of the matter is that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan recognized Nagorno-Karabakh as Azerbaijani territory in October 2022, and then reiterated that position in April and May 2023.

The situation in Nagorno-Karabakh is an internal matter of Azerbaijan, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told a Russian broadcaster on September 20.

"Karabakh is an internal matter of Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan acts on its territory, which is recognized by the leadership of Armenia," Peskov said, adding: "We are convinced that all rights and security of the Armenian population of Karabakh must be ensured."

What's Behind Armenia-Azerbaijan Conflict Over Nagorno-Karabakh?

"As per international law, the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh belongs to Azerbaijan," Dr. Swasti Rao, an associate fellow at the Europe and Eurasia Center at the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defense Studies and Analyses in New Delhi, told Sputnik. "This is the third time there is so much violence here. The first war was after the disintegration of the Soviet Union. In the first war, those regions were taken by Armenia. And there was a war which was fought in 2020, when the same regions were taken back by Azerbaijan. And according to international law, all those regions are actually Azerbaijani territory."

The September 2023 events were the third time when ethnic Armenians and Azerbaijani forces clashed over Nagorno-Karabakh, which proclaimed its secession from Baku in 1991-1992. Previously, hostilities erupted in the early 1990s and in 2020. The 2020 conflict ended with a Russia-mediated ceasefire and the deployment of Russian peacekeepers to the region.

The legal status of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic has always been controversial. Under the Alma-Ata Protocols of 1991, which set the founding principles of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) following the collapse of the USSR, Nagorno-Karabakh – the autonomous region within the former Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR) – became a part of the new Azerbaijani state.

Nonetheless, the predominantly Armenian-populated region did not agree with the established status quo and declared independence. Since 1994, the breakaway region has been largely reliant on Armenia and in many ways has been functioning as a de facto part of Armenia.

Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan addresses Parliament on September 14, 2022

Still, during his prime ministership, Nikol Pashinyan sent mixed signals with regard to the future of Nagorno-Karabakh. Prior to the second Karabakh conflict in 2020, Pashinyan repeatedly argued that "Artsakh is Armenia. Period."

However, in October 2022, Azerbaijan’s President Ilhan Aliyev and Pashinyan signed a statement in Prague recognizing the Alma-Ata Declaration of 1991, thus officially confirming Baku's legitimate mandate over Nagorno-Karabakh.

While addressing the Armenian parliament in April 2023, Pashinyan stated that peace in the South Caucasus is only possible if Armenia recognizes that its territory amounts to the 29,800 square kilometers of the former Armenian SSR in accordance with the Alma-Ata Protocol of 1991. In May 2023, in Brussels, at a summit under the auspices of the European Union, the borders of the two countries were again reaffirmed by Aliev and Pashinyan, confirming Azerbaijan's rights over Nagorno-Karabakh.

"Basically the thing is that the Nagorno-Karabakh under international law does not belong to Armenia. It belongs to Azerbaijan. And Azerbaijan is then at least justified in maintaining its position," Dr. Rao said.

How Russian Peacekeepers Shielded Armenians in Conflict Zone

Russian peacekeepers played a crucial role in both mediating the ceasefire and evacuating ethnic Armenians from the conflict zone. Since the beginning of active hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh, Russian peacekeepers have evacuated 3,154 people, including 1,428 children, from the Mardakert, Martuni, and Askeran regions, according to the bulletin of the Russian Ministry of Defense.

"Through the mediation of the command of the Russian peacekeeping contingent, an agreement was reached with the warring parties on a complete cessation of hostilities," the ministry's statement reads.

However, the Russian military sustained losses during the peacekeeping operation. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported earlier on Wednesday that during the return of a Russian contingent from an observation post in the area of the village of Dzhanyatag, Nagorno-Karabakh, a car with Russian military servicemen came under fire.

As a result, the Russian peacekeepers in the vehicle were killed, the ministry said. "To clarify all the circumstances of the incident, Russian and Azerbaijani representatives of the investigative authorities are working on the spot," the ministry noted, adding that following the cessation of hostilities, no violations of the ceasefire had been recorded so far.

How West Proved Incapable of Solving Nagorno-Karabakh Crisis

After the Russian peacekeepers stopped the conflict, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had a telephone conversation, during which they discussed the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh and issues on the bilateral Armenian-Russian agenda, per the Armenian government’s press service.

"This particular peace […] has actually come because of the efforts of the Russian peacekeepers," Dr. Rao said. "This is a good sign that Russia is reasserting its influence in the region, because Russia has been the traditional guarantor of security in these regions. On the other hand, it is a kind of an embarrassment for the European Union in a way, because despite all their efforts, they have not been able to come to a lasting solution."

The Indian scholar highlighted that despite Pashinyan's efforts to internationalize the Nagorno-Karabakh crisis and obtain support from the West, neither the US nor the European Union have proven to be capable of solving the regional dilemma.

The fact that Russia stepped in and stopped the bloodshed in Nagorno-Karabakh again has busted the Armenian prime minister’s earlier claims – made during an interview with a Western media outlet – that Moscow's influence was "waning" in the South Caucasus and that Russia was "leaving" the region.

"And from New Delhi's perspective, people definitely want an immediate cessation of violence, which thankfully has happened. And we would ask all sides to exercise that restraint and try the diplomatic channels, because I think now several decades of fighting has shown that there is no solution through violence, there has to be diplomatic negotiation. And for that, I think every side and all the political stakeholders, etc. have to come to the table at the same time," Dr. Rao concluded.
