‘A genocidal war’: Surgeon says Israel strategically destroying Gaza health

3‘A genocidal war’: Surgeon says Israel trategically destroying Gaza health

‘A genocidal war’: Surgeon says Israel strategically destroying Gaza health

Dr. Ghassan Abu Sittah, a surgeon who worked at both the Al-Shifa and Al-Alhi Baptist hospitals in Gaza, tells Al Jazeera that he believes the destruction of the health sector is part of an Israeli military strategy to wipe out the Palestinian population in Gaza.

Dr. Abu Sittah’s observations shed light on the dire situation in Gaza’s health sector, where the destruction is not just a consequence of conflict, but a deliberate strategy with devastating consequences for the Palestinian population.

Dr. Abu Sittah’s claims point to the larger issue of the impact of military strategies on civilian populations, raising questions about the ethics and legality of such tactics in conflict zones.

Indonesian Hospital in Gaza shelled as premature babies go to Egypt

As the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza becomes another war zone, medics are moving patients out of the line of fire to Nasser Hospital in the south. But a doctor there says he fears the facility may soon become a target itself.

At least 12 people were killed Monday at the Indonesian Hospital, according to a medical worker there and the Hamas-run Gazan health ministry. Both blamed Israel, saying its forces shelled the facility's second floor. Israel denied this, saying its troops returned fire on militants who targeted them from inside.

'God help us,' says Gaza doctor as wounded Palestinians flee one hospital for the next

This comes less than a week after Israeli forces raided Gaza's Al-Shifa hospital, claiming it houses a Hamas command centre, something the militant group denies.

Tareq Al-Daghma is a pediatric ICU doctor at the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, in southern Gaza, which has received about 200 patients from the Indonesian Hospital over the last two days, but they have neither the staff nor the supplies to care for them.

Our ICU was intended for pediatrics … not traumatology or surgical or multiple casualties. But we were obliged to do this work since we have no other options. We need the multidisciplinary team to overlook these patients, because these patients come with severe injuries, severe burns, fractures, all sorts of injuries.

We are short of doctors, as well, and nurses and supplies, and it's getting really bad.

We don't have clean water. We don't have enough food for our staff, who are exhausted. And sometimes we work continuously for more than 24 hours without rest.

We are facing very difficult situations in which we sometimes put a DNR [order] — this is meaning "do not resuscitate" — [on] patients with serious and severe injuries that we think ... won't survive.

There are reports of a strike, potentially an Israeli strike, on a residential apartment building in Khan Younis.... And you're saying you've received just more than 20 people [from its aftermath].

We have no fuel for the cars. People were bringing them on foot — it's about two kilometres away — or sometimes on a cart, or carried by donkeys and animals and horses.

The ambulances brought many children who already were dead. We looked for patients that ... can be saved, really, but they came in very critical condition. We did some resuscitation for them in the emergency room and, unfortunately, we could not save any of these children.

They were found on the streets. Imagine that. The bombing of their apartments ... they flew from the windows, and they found them on the streets.

I don't really have any vacant beds in the ICU.

Sometimes we put them in a regular room. We are out of ventilators. We are out of staff, especially nurses. There are many, many patients who are lying in the corridors ... critical patients.

We've also heard of doctors losing their lives. Have you lost any colleagues or friends?

In the beginning of the war, there was a doctor friend of mine. I don't know why they bombed his apartment. He died along [with] his whole family, around eight of them. He was called Aziz Al-Farra. He's a pharmacist. He was a really good friend and nice person, very charismatic personality.

The only surviving member of his family was a child called Hamza. I was still in grief and pain [from] hearing the news, and I was shocked again [when] they told me that in the emergency room, there is one child who's still alive, his eldest son, around 11 years old.

He had a brain hemorrhage. He has a fractured hip. He had abdominal penetrating wounds. We were fighting [for] him ... for around seven days, and then he ultimately died.

I told his cousin, the only surviving member of his family: Maybe it's God's wish, maybe it's the best thing that he would not live with this trauma and pain.

We're hearing that there might be some release of hostages by Hamas, that they might let some people go, and there might be some sort of pause [in the fighting]. When you hear that, does that make you hopeful?

Everybody here is not really hopeful about this ceasefire. Because … everybody's saying that they now think the IDF, the Israeli army, that they will come to the south of Gaza, and maybe our hospital will be the next target.

In the Indonesian Hospital, I have a colleague who died, a doctor, a physician, because they bombarded the hospital.

Nobody's hopeful that this war is going to stop here. Everybody's trying to flee out of the country.

They made Gaza unbearable and unable to be a habitable city. They demolished everything. We have no no electricity, no clean water, no food.

I'm the head of pediatric department and I'm supervising [the] ICU. I have an Egyptian nationality. I could have left a long time ago as a foreign nationality.

I live … east of Khan Younis, but from Day 1, we were told to evacuate. I don't know, maybe my house is demolished by now.

I had to go to the downtown city of Khan Younis to my wife's family place, and just after two days, we were bombarded. And, thankfully, me and my daughter — my only daughter, my only family member that I have here — we were lucky to be alive.

She's 18 years old. We are living now in the hospital. We have no other choice.

My wife was living before the war in Egypt. And I have another son studying in Egypt. So we are trying to survive.

I hope you convey our message. We need your prayers. We need your help. We need everybody to know that the Israeli army is not targeting Hamas. They are making genocidal massacres.

We don't see anyone taking action against this, any Arab countries as well. Which is astonishing and surprising, really. Nobody in the world cares for us. I don't know. Maybe they don't consider us as humans, or I don't know.

We are not all like Hamas. We are other humans. God help us.

Watch Russian Artillerymen Eliminate Ukrainian Troops in Special Operation Zone

Since the beginning of the special military operation, the Russian Armed Forces have skillfully used artillery to provide fire support to ground forces, engage enemy targets at a distance and destroy or suppress enemy positions.

The Russian Defense Ministry has released footage of Russian artillerymen from the Zapad battlegroup crushing Ukrainian troops in Kupyansk direction.

A reconnaissance group moved to the contact line to adjust artillery fire. A UAV tracked the temporary deployment of Ukrainian units. The coordinates were then immediately relayed to the artillery group and the D-20 crew launched a strike on the target with further corrections.

The D-20 is a towed howitzer that fires a variety of ammunition, including high-explosive, smoke and illumination rounds. The D-20 features a 152mm caliber barrel that provides exceptional firepower and accuracy.

Russian servicemen once again demonstrated their tactical skills in the Belogorovka area, skillfully locating and eliminating Ukrainian servicemen and an armored vehicle.

The Russian Defense Ministry has released footage of Russian forces from the Yug Battlegroup eliminating Ukrainian troops in Belogorovka area in Donetsk People's Republic (DPR). The video shows several episodes of the precise destruction of the armored vehicles of the Ukrainian troops, as well as of the personnel.

Russian troops used drones to survey the terrain and then guided attacks to destroy the enemy.

Thanks to the proactive and professional actions of our military personnel, units of the marine corps and special operations forces of Ukrainian troops are suffering significant losses," Shoigu told a Ministry board meeting.

Additionally, the Russian armed forces are holding positions along the entire line of combat contact in the military operation zone, gradually improving their positions, the minister said.

Russian Strategic Nuclear Forces

Maintaining all components of the Russian strategic nuclear forces in constant readiness is an important task, Sergei Shoigu said.

"An important task remains to maintain all components of the strategic nuclear forces in constant readiness," Shoigu told a Ministry board meeting.

The share of modern ships in the Russian nuclear triad has reached 100%, Shoigu said, adding that the Russian submarine forces will be equipped with 3 modern multipurpose vessels with Kalibr missile systems.

Procurement, Repairs of Weapons, Equipment for Russian Military

The volume of procurement and repairs of weapons of the Russian military will increase in 2024, Sergei Shoigu said at a Ministry board meeting.

"Taking into account additional budget allocations in 2024, the volume of procurement and repairs of weapons and military equipment will also increase. In the current conditions, it is necessary to ensure the advanced supply of weapons, military and special equipment to the troops, as well as to increase the production capabilities of enterprises of the military-industrial complex for the production and repair of the most popular units," Shoigu told a Ministry board meeting.

On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin participated in an extraordinary online BRICS summit on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

The situation in the Gaza Strip shows that the United States is trying to monopolize the mediation functions in the Palestinian-Israeli settlement, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during an extraordinary BRICS summit on the conflict.

"All these events are, in fact, a direct consequence of the United States' desire to monopolize the mediation functions in the Palestinian-Israeli settlement and its blocking of the activities of the Middle East Quartet of international mediators," Putin said.

Vladimir Putin commented on mass displacement of the local population and the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.

"The death of thousands of people [in the Gaza Strip], mass displacements of civilian population and the humanitarian catastrophe that has broken out cause great concern," Putin told the BRICS extraordinary summit on the situation in the Middle East.

"Participation of colleagues from the Middle East in today's meeting, who have received the invitation to be full members of BRICS this year, is especially important. I want to use the moment to note their efforts on the normalization of the situation, and in particular I mean the "peace summit" in Egypt and the extraordinary Islamic summit in Saudi Arabia," Putin also said.

It is important to prevent the geography of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict from expanding and to preserve the fragile interfaith peace in the region, Vladimir Putin said.

"The most urgent task is to achieve a truly long-term and sustainable ceasefire," Putin added.

Proper humanitarian pauses are required to ensure the safe release of hostages from the Gaza Strip, Putin said.

"I would like to emphasize that such humanitarian pauses, or better, of course, a full-fledged ceasefire, are necessary to continue efforts to release hostages and evacuate civilians and foreign citizens from the Gaza Strip," Putin stressed.

Due to the sabotage of UN decisions, more than one generation of Palestinians has been brought up with a sense of injustice, Putin added.

"Because of the sabotage of the UN decisions, which clearly provide for the creation and peaceful coexistence of two independent and sovereign states, Israel and Palestine, more than one generation of Palestinians has been brought up in an atmosphere of injustice shown to their people. And the Israelis cannot fully guarantee the security of their state," Putin said.

Vladimir Putin commended the urgent convening of the BRICS summit on important international issues, a practice that was introduced by South Africa.

"The new format of emergency online meetings of leaders, proposed by President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa seems very promising. Moreover, this concerns not only the Middle East settlement, but also other topical issues on the global and regional agenda," Putin told the BRICS extraordinary summit on the situation in the Middle East.

It is important to prevent the Israel-Palestine conflict from becoming a regional one, Putin said. Russia will initiate contacts on the Palestine-Israel settlement during its upcoming chairmanship in BRICS, Putin said.

"We consider it extremely useful to continue the discussion within the framework of BRICS on the further development of the Palestinian-Israeli confrontation. If there are no objections, dear colleagues, then during the upcoming Russian presidency in the association next year, we will initiate possible contacts, including via video link, on this issue," Putin said.

On October 7, Hamas launched a surprise large-scale rocket attack against Israel from the Gaza Strip and breached the border, killing more than 1,200 people and abducting over 200 others in neighboring Israeli communities. Israel launched retaliatory strikes and ordered a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip, cutting off supplies of water, food, and fuel. On October 27, Israel launched a large-scale ground incursion inside the Gaza Strip with the declared goal of eliminating Hamas fighters and rescuing the hostages. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of over 13,000 people in the Gaza Strip.

The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Indonesia, Palestine and the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) have arrived in Moscow to discuss the situation around the Gaza Strip with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, a diplomatic source told TASS.

"They have arrived, the meeting will start soon," the source said in response to a question.

The source also confirmed the composition of the participants in the meeting: Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki and OIC Secretary General Hissein Brahim Taha.

Tensions flared up again in the Middle East on October 7 when Hamas militants staged a surprise attack on Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip, killing residents of Israeli border settlements and taking hostages, including women, children and the elderly.

Hamas described its attack as a response to the aggressive actions of Israeli authorities against the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem’s Old City. Israel has announced a total blockade of the Gaza Strip and has been delivering air strikes on Gaza as well as some parts of Lebanon and Syria. Clashes are also underway in the West Bank.

China welcomes Arab and Muslim foreign ministers for talks on ending the war in Gaza

China’s top diplomat welcomed four Arab foreign ministers and the Indonesian one to Beijing on Monday, saying his country would work with “our brothers and sisters” in the Arab and Islamic world to try to end the war in Gaza as soon as possible.

The ministers from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, the Palestinian Authority and Indonesia chose to start in Beijing a tour to permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, a testament to both China’s growing geopolitical influence and its longstanding support for the Palestinians.

The ministerial committee stressed Monday the need for an immediate stop to “military escalation” in Gaza and to propel the political process forward with the goal of lasting peace, as well as “hold the Israeli occupation accountable for the blatant violations and crimes in the Gaza Strip and occupied West Bank,” according to a statement published by the Saudi foreign ministry on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told the foreign diplomats that their decision to start in Beijing shows their high level of trust in his nation.

“China is a good friend and brother of Arab and Islamic countries,” Wang said in opening remarks at a state guest house before their talks began. “We have always firmly safeguarded the legitimate rights and interests of Arab (and) Islamic countries and have always firmly supported the just cause of the Palestinian people.”

China has long backed the Palestinians and been quick to denounce Israel over its settlements in the occupied territories. It has not criticized the initial Hamas attack on Oct.7 — which killed about 1,200 people — while the United States and others have called it an act of terrorism. However, China does have growing economic ties with Israel.

The Saudi foreign minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, called for an immediate cease-fire and the entry of humanitarian aid and relief to the Gaza Strip.

“There are still dangerous developments ahead of us and an urgent humanitarian crisis that requires an international mobilization to deal with and counter it,” he said.

The visit came after Arab and Muslim leaders condemned the “brutal Israeli aggression” against the Palestinians at a rare joint summit of the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation hosted by Saudi Arabia last week. The secretary general of the OIC, Hissein Brahim Taha, is also accompanying them on the trip.

China — the world’s second-largest economy after the U.S. — has become increasingly outspoken on international affairs and even gotten directly involved in some recently, albeit cautiously.

In March, Beijing helped broker an agreement that saw Saudi Arabia and Iran reestablish ties after seven years of tension in a role previously reserved for longtime global heavyweights like the U.S. and Russia.

Israel’s retaliatory strikes on the Gaza Strip have so far killed more than 11,500 people, according to Palestinian health authorities. Another 2,700 have been reported missing, believed buried in rubble.

“This isn’t Israel’s first war against the Palestinian people,” said Riyad Al-Maliki, the Palestinian Authority foreign minister. “However, Israel wants this to be its last war, where it takes full control of the Palestinian people’s presence on what’s left of the historical land of Palestine.”

Israel’s ambassador to China, Irit Ben-Abba, said Monday, that her country is allowing sufficient humanitarian aid into Gaza in collaboration with international organizations and that “putting pressure on Israel in this regard is politically motivated and is not conducive to the humanitarian assistance which is needed.”

She also said that they hoped for “no one-sided” resolution by the Security Council and that they expected a clear statement calling for the “unconditional release of the 240 hostages” who were abducted by Hamas during its attacks, “rather than calling for a cease-fire.”
