Contrary to Kiev’s claims, Ukrainian Orthodox Church not subordinate to Russia — diplomat

The canonic Ukrainian Orthodox Church is not subordinate to Russia, no matter how hard the Kiev government is trying to prove the opposite, Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said.

"In these circumstances, we do understand the statement made on social media, where the UOC claims that they never asked Russia to convene this meeting and never authorized us to speak on their behalf at the United Nations. This is true.

No one from Ukraine of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church has approached us with such a request, which however proves again that that the UOC is not subordinate to Russia, no matter how hard the Kiev regime would try to assert the opposite," he told Tuesday’s session of the UN Security Council, initiated by Russia to discuss human rights in Ukraine.

Silicon Valley Lay-Offs Underline US Tech Sector Woes

Dozens of big and small US tech firms are laying off staff just two years after they embarked on a hiring spree. We take a look at where the jobs axe is falling the hardest.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdowns it brought saw a sharp rise in demand for software and tech solutions, as millions switched to working from home or just sat glued to online streaming and gaming services.

The ensuing boom saw firms across the San Francisco bay area's 'Silicon Valley' tech hub hiring on tens of thousands of new staff to cope.

But with the return to more-or-less normal life — barring the economic crisis driven by sanctions on Russia — the market has slumped and many techies are facing redundancy.

The big one is Facebook owner Meta*, where CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced he was shedding 11,000 jobs out of a total 87,000 in November.

A week later Cisco Systems, the firm named after its home city, decided to part ways with 4,100 workers, five per cent of its staff.

Then this January, Business software giant Salesforce said it was cutting its workforce by 10 per cent — around 8,000 redundancies — on top of 1,000 anno8nced in November.

Salesforce to Lay Off 10% of Staff and Cut Office Space

Salesforce, the business software giant, said Wednesday that it planned to lay off 10% of its workforce, or about 8,000 employees, and scale back office space because of concerns about the economy.

“The environment remains challenging and our customers are taking a more measured approach to their purchasing decisions,” Marc Benioff, the company’s co-chief executive, said in a note to employees announcing the cuts.

Salesforce’s revenue, like that of many other technology companies, boomed during the pandemic when more people around the world worked from home and relied more heavily on technology to collaborate with colleagues remotely. In his letter, Benioff suggested that the company had hired too aggressively during that period.

Salesforce employed just under 80,000 people at the end of October, up from about 48,000 three years earlier.

“We hired too many people leading into this economic downturn we’re now facing, and I take responsibility for that,” Benioff said.

A Salesforce spokesperson said the company had no further comment on the cuts.

The layoffs cast the tech industry’s slowdown into even sharper relief. In recent months, tech giants like Amazon have slowed down hiring and cut jobs, while smaller companies like Lyft and Stripe have also announced layoffs. Many of the industry’s largest firms have reported financial results suggesting they were feeling the effects of stubbornly high inflation and rising interest rates.

The company estimated that the changes would cost up to $2.1 billion. Salesforce is offering U.S. employees a minimum of five months of pay, as well as health insurance and career resources, Benioff said. Most of the cuts will be made “over the coming weeks,” he wrote.

A Salesforce spokesperson said the company had no further comment on the cuts.

Salesforce’s sales grew by 14% in its latest quarter, the slowest pace in years; it projected even slower growth in its current quarter. Other tech chiefs, such as Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, have recently admitted to hiring too many people as they rushed to make cuts. More than 150,000 tech workers were laid off last year, according to Layoffs.fyi, a site that tracks job cuts.

In November, Bret Taylor, Salesforce’s co-chief executive, announced he would resign from his post and leave at the end of this month. In December, Stewart Butterfield, the chief executive of Slack, a workplace communication platform owned by Salesforce, also said he would leave his position by the end of this month. Salesforce bought Slack for $27.7 billion in 2020.

Salesforce is the largest private employer in San Francisco, and its flagship office building is the city’s tallest.

Silicon Valley layoffs go from bad to worse

Shortly before Thanksgiving, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy confirmed rumors that layoffs had begun in multiple departments at the e-commerce giant and said it would review staffing needs into the new year.

On Wednesday, Jassy provided a sobering update on that review: Amazon is cutting more than 18,000 jobs, nearly double the 10,000 that had previously been reported and marking the highest absolute number of layoffs of any tech company in the recent downturn.

Social media companies have struggled with a pullback in digital advertising in particular. Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, cut 13% of its employees in November and said its head count would remain “roughly flat” through the end of this year. Snap, Snapchat’s parent company, laid off 20% of its employees in August, blaming challenging macroeconomic conditions. Elon Musk, who purchased Twitter for $44 billion in October, has slashed the company’s workforce by more than half.

Amanda Katz
Washington, D.C.

Pekan lalu, American Dialect Society mengumumkan hasil pemungutan suara untuk Word of the Year 2022.

Jika Anda belum tahu, FAFO adalah singkatan dari "eff around and find out.

Bagaimana Musk menjelaskan keputusan eksekutifnya?

When I asked Sheidlower why he thinks FAFO is so popular, he acknowledged that it’s a “punchy phrase” suited for these extremely online times. The FAFO shortening, which he dates to at least 2012, is “easier to type on a phone,” he wrote in an email. “It's not obscene so you can use it in more contexts.”

Note :

The security of Russia must be unconditionally ensured, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday.

Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu has held a meeting with the senior leadership of the Russian Armed Forces concerning the implementation of President Vladimir Putin's decision to increase the military's size 1.5 million.

"This is due to the war that the countries of the collective West are waging, a proxy war that includes both elements of indirect participation in hostilities and elements of economic war, financial war, legal war, going beyond the legal field, and so on. Such measures are related to this. The security of our country must be unconditionally ensured," Peskov told reporters.

Shoigu inspected the headquarters of the Vostok group of troops while working in the special operation zone, the Defense Ministry reports.

The minister listened to the report of the commander of the grouping on the current situation, as well as the commanders of formations and formations on the progress of combat missions in the main directions.

Shoigu paid special attention to the creation of conditions for the safe deployment of the military, the organization of support for the troops, the work of medical and rear units.

Putin's decree on the enlargement of the Russian Army came into force on January 1, 2023. According to the document, the staff strength of the Russian Armed Forces is set at 2,039,758 people, including 1,150,628 troops. According to Shoigu, changes in the Russian army, including an increase in its number to 1.5 million military personnel, will be implemented from 2023 to 2026

Putin: Almost Entirety of NATO's Military Potential Being Actively Used Against Russia

Russian officials and some Western media and pundits have characterized the conflict in Ukraine as a proxy war between the West and Russia. The US and its allies have poured tens of billions of dollars' worth of military aid into Ukraine, trained tens of thousands of troops, and provided Kiev with intelligence and strategic level planning support.

The military potential of almost all NATO countries is being actively used against Russia, and Moscow must improve its knowledge and understanding of the Western bloc's weapons systems, experience and tactics to improve the fighting potential of the Russian military, President Vladimir Putin has said.

"It's well known that today the military potential and capabilities of almost all major NATO countries are being actively used against Russia," Putin said, speaking at a meeting with senior Russian Defense Ministry officials on Wednesday.

"All the information about NATO forces, the means which are actively used in the course of the special military operation [in Ukraine], to oppose us are well known. You have all this information before you, and it must be thoroughly analyzed, and used in the construction of our armed forces to increase the combat capabilities of the troops, as well as Russia's special services," Putin said.

Putin ordered the MoD and the General Staff to "carefully analyze" the "tremendous combat experience" gained in the course of the military operation in Ukraine, to "systematize it as quickly as possible and include it in programs and planning for the training of personnel, troops as a whole and supplying the forces with necessary equipment."

The president also pointed to the "significant resources" being spent by the United States and its allies on information and psychological warfare against Russia, including the publication of "thousands" of fake news stories in Western print and internet media and television, while covering up war crimes being carried out by the Ukrainian side.

Putin accused Moscow's geopolitical opponents of using "everything that isn't tied down" against Russia, including efforts to brainwash the population of Ukraine and other post-Soviet republics, in the aftermath of the collapse of the USSR in 1991. This process continues today, according to Putin. Russia, he said, had sought to become a part of the "civilized" world, but soon learned that it was "not expected there."

Strategic Balance

Russia will continue to build up its conventional military potential while also supporting and modernizing its nuclear triad, Putin said, referring to the latter as the main guarantee of the nation's sovereignty, and the means by which Russia helps preserve "strategic parity and the overall balance of power in the world."

Ukraine Conflict Shows Need for New Technologies

Praising the courage of the troops on the front lines in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Putin called on his colleagues to honor the memories of soldiers who have lost their lives with a minute of silence. The president stressed that the goals of the military operation will be met, and that the security of all of Russia's territories would be assured.

In connection with the military operation, Putin said that the conflict has demonstrated that the use of drone warfare has become "almost ubiquitous," and that Russia will have to arm itself with an interlinked arsenal of drones incorporated into every echelon, from companies and battalions to individual squads and platoons.

"In the near future, every individual soldier should have the opportunity to receive information transmitted from drones. We must push for this, strive for this," Putin said. "Targets need to be detected as quickly as possible, and information must be transmitted (immediately) to carry out strikes in real time."

Russia has the technical capabilities to realize this, the president believes, pointing to the defense sector's experience in developing unique underwater drones, a likely reference to the Poseidon nuclear-powered, nuclear-capable torpedo.

Turning to organizational problems, Putin called on the MoD to pay more attention to public criticism and initiatives for improving its work being floated by civilians, asking that the MoD take criticism into account and respond accordingly, in a timely matter. "It's clear that the reaction of people who see problems, (and problems in such large and complex work always appear) can be emotional, but it's necessary to listen to and hear out those who do not seek to hush up existing problems, but to contribute to their resolution."

"The mood of the enemy as a whole is very deplorable. Slowly they begin to surrender," the commander of a tank company of the RF Armed Forces spoke about the situation in the southern sector in the special operation zone

Special operation, January 16th. The main thing:

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation announced the defeat by army aviation and artillery of the forces of Kyiv in the Kupyansky, Krasno-Limansky, Donetsk and South-Donetsk directions;

Peskov about the collapse of a residential building in Dnepropetrovsk: the Russian military does not strike at residential buildings and the social infrastructure of Ukraine. He also drew attention to the fact that some representatives of Kyiv have already called the air defense work the cause of the tragedy;

The liberation of the Kyiv-controlled part of the Zaporozhye region may begin in the spring, said the acting head of the Balitsky region;

The Times reported that Kyiv initially entrusted the defense of Artemovsk to foreign mercenaries and non-professional military in the expectation that the fate of hostilities would be decided in the spring;

Putin spoke on the phone with Erdogan, touched upon the issue of the exchange of prisoners between Russia and Ukraine and the progress of the grain deal;

Ukrainian troops shelled Donetsk, hits were recorded in a supermarket, a pharmacy and a residential building, according to the People's Militia of the DPR, at least two people were killed, three were injured;

Air defense and the Black Sea Fleet shot down 10 Ukrainian drones, the governor of Sevastopol said;

Ukrainian power engineers announced a “huge shortage” of generation after a number of thermal power plants were damaged, Ukrenergo limited consumption throughout the country;

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation is ready to consider the issue of regulating the legal status in Russia of the Frenchman Adrian Boke, who visited the Donbass as a volunteer, he asked the Russian authorities to grant him political asylum;

Ukrainian military arrived in Oklahoma, where they will be trained to work with the Patriot air defense system, it is planned to train a hundred specialists;

The supply of tanks by the West to Ukraine will not change the situation, but will only prolong the suffering of the Ukrainian people, Peskov said;

Ukraine has become a "weapons laboratory in every sense" for testing Western weapons, and some of their types as a result of such "tests" may become a thing of the past, CNN reported.

Russian Foreign Intelligence chief Sergey Naryshkin said on Tuesday that the ‘return’ of Crimea to Ukraine is impossible.

"This is impossible," Naryshkin told TASS commenting on Kiev's recently announced intentions to launch work on ‘returning back Crimea.’

The Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol, a city with a special status on the Crimean Peninsula, where most residents are Russian, refused to recognize the legitimacy of authorities that seized power amid riots during the illegitimate coup of February 2014 in Ukraine.

Crimea and Sevastopol adopted declarations of independence on March 11, 2014. They held a referendum on March 16, 2014, in which 96.7% of Crimeans and 95.6% of Sevastopol voters chose to secede from Ukraine and join the Russian Federation. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the reunification treaties on March 18, 2014. The documents were ratified by Russia’s Federal Assembly, or bicameral parliament, on March 21.

Despite the overwhelming results of the referendum, Ukraine still refuses to recognize Crimea as part of Russia.

Shoigu Inspects Vostok Group HQ During Work in Special Operation Zone

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu inspected the headquarters of the Vostok group operating in Ukraine during work in the special military operation zone, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.

"Shoigu inspected the headquarters of the Vostok group of troops in the course of work in the zone of the special military operation," the ministry said in a statement.

The minister also heard a report from the commander of the group, Lieutenant General Rustam Muradov, on the current situation and the actions of the group of troops commanding in other directions, the statement read.

‘Doomsday Weapon’: Russian Nuclear Sub Will Reportedly Get Advanced Torpedo Drones in ‘Near Future

Russian President Vladimir Putin unveiled the nuclear-tipped Poseidon drone during his message to the Federal Assembly in 2018.

The first batch of Poseidon state-of-the-art underwater torpedo drones has been produced for the nuclear-powered Russian submarine Belgorod, Russian state media reported, citing an unnamed source in the country’s Defense Ministry.

©Photo : Russian Defence Ministry press service/Go to the mediabank

The source argued that the submarine would be equipped with these nuclear-armed drones “in the near future", and that “separate tests” of the Poseidon’s core components have been successfully completed.

In October 2022, an Italian newspaper referred to unnamed NATO intelligence source claiming that a Russian nuclear submarine carrying the Poseidon, which is known in the Western press as the “Doomsday weapon”, had left the base for possible nuclear tests.

The paper also asserted that the Poseidon drone’s launch can be likened to that of an intercontinental ballistic missile, which can cause a "radioactive tsunami."

This followed Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announcing the successful completion of the Poseidon's sea range tests in 2021.

Russian President Vladimir Putin unveiled the Poseidon in 2018, touting it as one of half a dozen new strategic systems meant to ensure Russia’s ability to retaliate in the event of nuclear aggression by the US or its allies.

According to Putin, the drone is capable of traveling at great depths and with an intercontinental range at speeds that are several times greater than most submarines and modern torpedoes can achieve.

The Belgorod, which is more than 608 feet (184 meters) in length, and also known as Project 09852, remains the longest submarine in the world, even longer that the US Navy’s Ohio class ballistic missile submarine. The Belgorod, which has a crew of 118 and moves at a speed of 33 knots (61 km/h), is designed to implement the Russian navy’s “special missions”.
