An afternoon explosion on one of Turkey’s busiest shopping thoroughfares Sunday killed at least six people and injured dozens more, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, calling the explosion a “treacherous attack.”

In footage shared on social media that appeared to show the explosion — on Istiklal Street, a broad, storied pedestrian avenue in Istanbul’s Beyoglu district — a small fireball can be seen, along with tourists and shoppers screaming and fleeing in panic.

At least 53 people were wounded in the attack, Erdogan said, in remarks to reporters shortly before departing Turkey on Sunday. “If we say that this is terror it might be wrong, but with the initial developments and with the information that my governor has relayed to us, there is the smell of terror,” he said, adding that there were “initial” reports that a woman fleeing the scene had played some role.

Turkey over the past decade has been a frequent target of attacks, carried out by militants from the Islamic State extremist group or Kurdish militants, among others. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the explosion Sunday, and the authorities did not name any suspects.

Ali Yerlikaya, the regional governor of Istanbul, said in a message posted on Twitter that the explosion occurred shortly after 4 p.m. local time. It was audible for miles around, in a neighborhood known for tourist attractions and shops that are a magnet for the millions of visitors who have ventured to Istanbul as pandemic fears over travel have begun to subside.

Unverified videos shared on social media footage showed what appeared to be several bodies lying on the ground, on a stretch of Istiklal near Istanbul’s Taksim Square. Ambulances could be seen racing from the scene shortly after the explosion through throngs of tourists. Istanbul’s mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, appealed for calm on social media and called on people to assist authorities at the site.

Istiklal avenue, sometimes called Istanbul’s Champs-Elysées, was the site of a suicide bombing in March 2016 that killed five people, including two U.S. nationals, and injured dozens more. Every day of the week, the avenue is filled with people — Turkish citizens, along with tourists from a multitude of countries — strolling or visiting large chain stores that have outlets on Istiklal, as well as a handful of shopping malls.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the blast a “treacherous attack” and said its perpetrators would be punished.

He did not say who was behind the attack but said it had the “smell of terror” without offering details and also adding that was not certain yet. The president said investigations were ongoing by the police and the governor’s office, including reviewing footage of the area.

Turkish media on Sunday reported that an explosion on Istanbul’s popular pedestrian Istiklal Avenue has injured a number of people.

Emergency services and police were dispatched at the site of the incident following the blast, reports suggest. According to Turkish TV, the blast occurred on the İstiklal Caddesi avenue in the center of Istanbul on Sunday, leaving at least 4 dead and 11 wounded.

"There was an explosion on İstiklal Street overlooking Taksim Square in Istanbul. It is reported that many people were injured in the explosion. After the incident, many medical teams were sent to the area. Security forces cordoned off the area," TV said.

There has been no additional information on the cause of the blast so far.

A video posted online showed flames erupting and a loud bang, as pedestrians turned and ran away

Other footage showed ambulances, fire trucks and police at the scene. The cause of the explosion was not clear. Social media users said shops were shuttered and the avenue closed down.

Broadcaster CNN Turk said 11 people were injured. The avenue is a crowded thoroughfare popular with tourists and locals, lined by shops and restaurants. The explosion occurred at about 4:20 p.m. (1330 GMT).

State broadcaster TRT and other media showed ambulances and police heading to the scene on Istanbul's popular Istiklal Street in the Beyoglu district. State-owned Anadolu agency said the cause of the blast was not yet known.

The nearby Kasimpasa police station said all crews were at the scene but gave no further details.

Indonesia is of great interest to Elon Musk and his flagship company Tesla. This country has the largest nickel reserves in the world, and nickel is an essential metal used in making Tesla`s batteries.

Musk, the world's richest man, is facing litigation over his 2018 pay package, worth about $56 billion in stock options. The court trial is slated to begin next week. That's why he won't physically visit the business conference in Indonesia.

The plaintiff states that remuneration to Musk was approved by aboard of directors controlled by Musk. He believes that it is illegal and insists that Musk should return this money.

Indonesia is of great interest to Musk. Apart from the fact that this country is a vast emerging market, Indonesia also possesses the greatest nickel reserves in the world. Nickel is essential component of Tesla's batteries, which is why Musk will participate in a virtual discussion on the `future disruption of global technological innovation` with Indonesian billionaire Anindya Bakrie.

G20 (Group of 20) is intergovernmental forum that consists of 19 countries and the European Union. This year the summit will be held from 15-16 November on Bali and will be attended by world political and business leaders.

"In regards with Elon Musk, he has a trial. He must be present at the court," Indonesia's coordinating minister of maritime and investment affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan told reporters at the business conference on the eve of the G20 leaders' summit starting on Tuesday.

His office said the world's richest person would instead take part in an hour-long virtual discussion on "future disruption of global technological innovation" at the B20 on Monday with Indonesian tycoon Anindya Bakrie.

The B20 lists Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as attendees

Indonesian President Joko Widodo travelled to Texas to meet Musk earlier this year for talks about Tesla investing in the country's nickel industry.

Indonesia has the largest nickel reserves in the world, and the pioneering electric car company is reportedly eyeing them for components for its batteries.

The colossal pay packet being challenged in a Delaware court by a Tesla shareholder was approved by the company's shareholders at the time.

World leaders including Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden will travel to the summit on the mostly Hindu island for talks with other G20 leaders.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will be absent from the meet as war continues to rage in Ukraine.

Tokyo’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially confirmed the death of a Japanese "volunteer" in the ranks of the Ukraine Armed Forces on November 11.

Japanese authorities called on all nationals to leave the Ukraine combat zone this past spring. However, social media has revealed that at least one Japanese citizen was still enrolled in the foreign mercenary battalions that are actively engaged in the country.

These battalions often recruit on ideological grounds, reaching out to neo-Nazis and the ultra-right. One such Japanese used the call sign "Dobre", meaning “Good” in Russian and Ukrainian.

Foreign Mercenaries to the Rescue?

On February 27, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the creation of the "International Legion for the Defense of Ukraine" in the name of “protecting Ukraine, Europe, and the world”, calling on foreign citizens to come fight.

Most countries did not formally support the move. British authorities, for example, warned that those who heeded the call could be prosecuted upon return. For its part, the Japanese government urged its citizens not to travel to Ukraine, “regardless of the purpose of their visit.” However, the work of Ukrainian embassies in recruiting fighters to "protect democracy" continued.

In July, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that the number of foreign mercenaries stood at 7,107, with most coming from Poland. On September 2, Russia’s Minister of Defense Sergei Shoigu informed that the number of mercenaries had fallen by more than 2/3 since the start of the special military operation.

Mercenaries That Don't Exist

The foreign mercenary-tracking Telegram channel TrackANaziMerc is gaining increasing popularity.

This channel also regularly posts information and photos of neo-Nazis, whose bodies show tattoos with portraits of Hitler and Bandera, Nazi German troop symbols, as well as signs of Nazi paramilitary units. Despite their ideological similarity, these men are quite diverse in terms of their national origin, stemming from the United States, Canada, Latin America, Scandinavia, elsewhere in Europe, and so it seems, even Asia.

Of course, none of these mercenaries want their photos to become public or to have their faces recognized (Dobre bashfully covers his face with a "sunshine" emoji). But, most interestingly, the mercenaries’ identities were revealed by... their own posts on social networks, through forgotten geolocations from the battlefields, video blogs from the trenches, trips to Ukrainian supermarkets, direct comments that they are now fighting against the Russians, and photos with famous Ukrainian troops.

First Japanese "Volunteer" Died

On November 10, information about Dobre's death appeared on social networks. The following day, the Japanese Foreign Ministry confirmed the story. The Telegram channel reported that the Japanese man apparently adhered to the militaristic views of Imperial Japan. In his microblog on Twitter, the mercenary shared the details of his adventures with his followers.

"The comrades took some great pictures today. Dobre, you look great as always!"

Earlier on November 4, it became known that fellow mercenary Zeng Yuhong from Taiwan had also been killed. He had fought for the Carpathian Sich Battalion, a paramilitary unit in Ukraine with the largest number of foreigners in its ranks. After his death, Dobre said that he "will fight together with his spirit until the end of the war" and will visit his hometown after the end of the hostilities.

"Yes, I'm a Nazi. So What's the Problem?"

The majority of mercenaries are devout neo-Nazis, with Dobre being just one of dozens of examples.

On November 6, a Portuguese mercenary from the Carpathian Sich Battalion, Rico Chaves, went "to war" with the subscribers of the mentioned Telegram channel, where he confessed his sympathies for Nazism.

“Yes, I'm a Nazi. So what's the problem? I like to fight, and I will kill all the Russians in the Ukraine. Yes, I'm in the house of civilians, on the front lines. I'm not a NATO soldier, I'm in the Carpathian Sich. I've already killed a lot of Russians".

Banjir cukup parah melanda permukiman dan sawah warga di Desa/Kecamatan Mayang Kabupaten Jember Jawa Timur kemarin, hari Sabtu, 11/11/2022.

Banjir menyebabkan kerugian tidak sedikit. Banjir ini terjadi setelah hujan deras mengguyur kawasan setempat selama beberapa jam hingga menyebabkan sungai meluap.

Dijelaskan Kepala Desa Mayang Eli Febrianto, banjir ini terjadi setelah hujan sejak pagi hingga sore. Sungai Klayu sampai tidak mampu menampung debit air hingga meluap.

"Jadinya air meluap. Imbasnya, beberapa rumah warga tergenang air setinggi 50 centimeter.

NATO has stopped claiming its defensive essence and now hopes to play a leading role in the Asia-Pacific region, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told reporters on Sunday following his participation in the East Asia Summit.

"NATO no longer says that it is a purely defensive alliance. It was a defensive alliance when the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact existed. They have moved their line of defense since then, when there is no longer the Warsaw Pact or the Soviet Union. It is unclear from whom they were defending themselves.

They have moved this line of defense closer to our borders several times, and now they announced at the Madrid summit this summer that they have global responsibility and that the security of Euro-Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific region are indivisible," the top diplomat said.·

"That is, in fact, they are now claiming that they will play a leading role here (in the Asia-Pasific region - TASS) and are already shifting the so-called defense line to the South China Sea," Lavrov added.

The Russian foreign minister drew attention to a tendency to militarize the region by matching the efforts of local US allies, Australia, New Zealand and Japan, with an expanding NATO presence. According to him, the Russian side frankly outlined its assessments at the East Asia Summit summit, and approaches similar to the Russian ones were voiced by Beijing as well.

"However, unfortunately, this will hardly make the US and its allies take into account the interests of most of the countries that are here," Lavrov continued, "But we will continue to convey our position.

It is met with understanding within ASEAN, although there is no consensus in ASEAN as well on how to proceed in the security sphere in this region. So if the goal is to sow doubt in ASEAN and try to undermine their monolithic position, then the Americans have achieved their goal."

The Russian top diplomat noted the position of most ASEAN countries, which, according to him, were focused on defending their own interests and not subordinating ASEAN's actions to the interests of extra-regional players.

"Our partners highly estimate the position of Russia, the position of China, which are in favor of preserving the central role of ASEAN," Lavrov summarized.

Tendencies to politicize the work of the G20 specialized councils, particularly the Council of Ministers of Health, are unacceptable, as they put the responsibilities of developing the global health architecture in jeopardy, Russia’s Minister of Health Mikhail Murashko said.

"I would like to point out that we are witnessing unfavorable tendencies toward the politicization of the work of the G20 specialized councils, particularly the Council of Ministers of Health, which is unacceptable and invalidates the agreements reached. If the trend of political problems dominating industry issues continues, we risk failing to achieve our goals of strengthening global health architecture and achieving the highest level of global health," Murashko was quoted by the Ministry of Health.

Murashko also stated that Russia "strongly opposes" the criticism directed at Russia's special military operation by the G20 countries. "The operation was aimed to protect people who did not recognize the anti-constitutional coup in Kiev in 2014 and have been subjected to military aggression over the past eight years," he said.

Uralchem agrees on exporting fertilizers blocked in three EU countries to Africa

Uralchem-Uralkali group of companies agreed to export to Africa humanitarian consignments of fertilizers blocked in warehouses in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Estonia, general director of Uralchem Dmitry Konyaev told TASS.

According to him, on November 8, the company signed an agreement for the supply of the first batch to Malawi and is discussing the organization of supplies to Africa of more than 260,000 metric tons of fertilizers.

"The Uralchem-Uralkali group of companies is actively working with the UN to organize free deliveries of more than 262,000 tons of mineral fertilizers to Africa that were ‘frozen’ in the EU countries. Agreements have already been reached on the export of fertilizers located in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Estonia," he said.

Konyaev added that the distribution of fertilizers to specific countries is coordinated through the African Union, and the company supplies fertilizers at its own expense.

Earlier, the UN reported that the first batch of Russian fertilizers blocked in European ports will go to Malawi next week.

The general director of UCC "Uralchem" also noted that earlier the group supplied 23,500 metroc tons of complex fertilizer from Russia to Burkina Faso as humanitarian aid.
